“Karl! Good morning!”
Karl let an answering smile spread across his face as Alisha approached him. It was nice to see someone friendly after his last two interactions with the residents of Bracken Ridge.
Alisha came to a stop in front of him, smiling brightly. She stood close — perhaps a littler closer than Karl would have expected. Close enough that she had to tilt her head slightly to look up at him. Her long blonde hair, messy from the wind, framed her face. Her cheeks were flushed, the tip of her nose slightly red.
She looked good.
“Alisha, hey. I thought I would be one of only a few people up so early, but I guess I was wrong.”
Karl gestured at the main street. In truth, there weren’t all that many people in view. But it was a lot considering the brisk weather, and the fact that the morning still had that slightly grey sky you got before the sun had properly risen.
Alisha rocked back on her heels, looking oddly youthful. She grinned.
“Oh, most people are up and about at this hour — even if they haven’t gotten around to leaving their homes. I’m pleased to see you’re an early riser! You’ll fit in well here.”
“Oh, you think so?”
Alisha nodded seriously.
“Of course. I have a sense about these things. So, how was your first night here? Sleep well?”
Karl hesitated. Alisha was being oddly ... personable. She certainly seemed very comfortable in standing so close to him.
“Not bad. Of course, I don’t have a lot of furniture yet. But we lit the fire. Made a night of it, you know?”
Alisha’s smile flickered for just a moment.
“Ah, of course. And how is ... Jessica, right? Is she out and about as well?”
Karl shook his head.
“Jess? No, she’s sleeping in. She was tired from, ah, the trip out here.”
“Of course, of course. Well, in the meanwhile, why don’t we —”
A woman’s voice called out from out the front of the cafe.
“Alisha? Am I just supposed to wait here by myself, or...?”
Karl saw Alisha’s face flush in embarrassment.
“Oh, darn! I forgot that — um, Karl, come with me. I’ll introduce you to a friend of mine.”
Karl blinked as Alisha casually took hold of his arm, towing him towards the cafe. She led him to where a woman was waiting, teasingly tapping her foot on the ground in mock-impatience.
The woman sighed.
“Oh, so you did remember I was here, Alisha.”
“Amanda! I’m sorry, I just saw our newest resident, and — Karl, this is Amanda. Amanda, this young man is Karl Fischer.”
Karl nodded his head easily at woman.
“Hi, nice to meet you, Amanda.”
“You as well, Karl. Feel free to call me Mandy. Most people do.”
She smiled. Amanda was an attractive woman of about Alisha’s age. She had red hair, a face that was dusted with freckles, and a wry expression on her face. Amanda was wearing jeans, and a long sleeve flannel shirt with a jacket over the top. The simple clothes looked good on her, and Karl couldn’t help but notice the way her body filled them out.
Karl realised he had been staring a moment too long, and jerked his eyes back up to Amanda’s face. Instead of being offended, she flashed him an amused half-smile. He swore that she even tossed him a quick wink as well.
“So how are you finding Bracken Ridge, Karl?”
“Oh, Uh, good. I mean, I only got here last night though.”
Amanda chimed in.
“Mandy, apparently Karl grew up here. He moved away with his father when he was young.”
Amanda raised an eyebrow, interested.
“Oh, so we have an original resident. Won’t that just stir everyone up.”
“Uh, it will?”
Alisha quickly chimed in, laughing.
“Oh, don’t mind her, Karl. She’s just making a joke. Amanda, Karl is at the Fischer cabin. Remember how I told you that they found a relative? Arnold was Karl’s uncle.”
Amanda pursed her lips.
“Ah, my condolences, Karl. I’m sorry to say that I didn’t really know your uncle.”
Karl waved a hand dismissively, smiling to take the sting out of it.
“It’s okay, I didn’t either. I haven’t seen him since I was a little kid. So, um — if you don’t mind me asking, how come you didn’t know him? Alisha said everyone knew everyone around here.”
Amanda dug her hands into her pockets.
“Oh, we — my husband, Jamie, and our little girl — have been wanting to move out here for years. But it’s been so hard to find a home. Everything is either locked up in long-term residences or being rented as holiday homes.”
Karl nodded along, but inwardly he was shocked. He surreptitiously eyed the attractive redhead again. She had a kid? She certainly didn’t look like she did.
Alisha broke in.
“Mandy is right. There’s a waiting list of people looking to buy. She was lucky. We had a small exodus of residents about six months ago. Just people selling up and leaving. It was a little surprising actually.”
Karl cocked his head, interested.
“Really? So many all at once?”
Alisha laughed lightly.
“Oh, it wasn’t actually that many. Four or five families. It was only strange because they went at about the same time. All listing their houses for sale, one after the other! But I guess that’s how these things go. If it was just one person leaving, you wouldn’t even notice!”
Amanda nodded. She gave Karl another small smile, and he wondered if she had noticed him looking at her again.
“It all worked out well for us in the end. We finally got our home up in the mountains — even though it was so sudden that we had to scramble to take advantage of the opportunity! Anyway, Alisha — my coffee order is ready, so I better get back to Jamie. See you soon? And Karl — lovely to meet you.”
Alisha gave Amanda a swift hug, and then the redheaded woman left. Karl saw her walk up to and kiss the cheek of a man standing by a stroller with a rugged-up child in it. She handed him a coffee, and then the three of them walked up the street.
Alisha sighed.
“Off she goes. I feel a little bad. It’s hard to find time to see her, and I ran off and left her when I saw you.”
“Ah — why did you? Not that it wasn’t nice to see you of course.”
Alisha gave Karl a crooked smile.
“Well, I didn’t see the start, but I caught the tail end of your meeting with the town eccentric, Jasper. I thought you might need a friendly face.”
“Oh. I didn’t actually catch his name, but yeah. You saw that, did you?”
Alisha sighed.
“Yes, not exactly the first person I would want you to meet. Don’t worry though, he’s all bark and no bite.”
Karl raised an eyebrow.
“Are you sure? He seemed a little...”
“Over the top? That’s Jasper. I think he just goes stir-crazy this time of year. He’s the caretaker of one of the smaller ski resorts up in the hills. It’s so small there isn’t even a skeleton crew — just Jasper. He does the maintenance, checks that nothing is damaged before it opens up again in the winter ... he only comes down into Bracken Ridge occasionally.”
Karl frowned, feeling that he wasn’t getting the whole story.
“He certainly had a few things to say about my uncle’s cabin. He was talking about it being torn down.”
“Torn down ... I have no idea where he would have got an idea like that from. Let me assure you that no such measure was ever even proposed to the town council.”
Karl watched Alisha closely, but she seemed to be genuinely nonplussed. He forced a laugh.
“Oh well, I guess it’s as you said. He must have just been in a bad mood this morning. Although ... he did call the place cursed.”
Alisha blinked. Then burst out laughing.
“Cursed? I wish! That’s a story that could actually draw in tourists no matter what season of the year it is. No, I think Jasper might have just been pulling your leg. I’ll have a word with him the next time I see him though. Come on, I’ll get you a coffee instead of just jawing your ear off.”
