It was the last week in July when Principal Peters called me and ordered me to attend all seven days of this basketball camp. He used the threat of accusing me of improper behavior with the girl’s basketball team during the previous season to get me to agree, but it was clear my wife had put him up to this. So now, I was sitting on the bleachers and watching the crew setup for the dinner that was going to be part of the opening ceremonies.
The crew finally finished with the setup for the opening ceremonies two hours before the first teams were due to arrive and I found myself sitting alone in the now almost dark athletic hall. Part of me wanted to walk around and look at the some of the decorations, but instead I found myself thinking about what I had gone through for two years with Robin. I wanted nothing to do with her anymore, but waiting for her to be picked up was rapidly becoming unbearable.
However, coming to the decision that I needed to act still left me considering what option I wished to follow. I knew that with her influence over the principals of the two schools she could do a huge amount of damage to my career with just a few words. My reasons for avoiding conflict with her had not changed. This puzzle kept me so distracted that I was shocked when someone dropped into my lap.
“Hey teach!” a voice said. My eyes that had closed while I puzzled through my options snapped open and I found myself staring directly into Vicki’s sky-blue eyes. Just behind her, I could see Buffy standing behind her and smiling.
“Vicki!” I said, giving her a quick hug and then pushing her to stand up again. “What are you doing here, and are you trying to get me in trouble?”
The girl laughed and kissed me on the cheek before standing up. “Our school is the host and since the witch spends a lot of time in the arms of our cheerleading coach, the whole team is going to attend. Buffy and I just came over early.”
I could see both of them were wearing the purple and white vest and uniform skirt for Monte Vista’s cheerleaders. Her words broke through the confusion of my thoughts however and I started looking around. “What if they come in?”
Buffy burst out laughing. “Maybe in thirty minutes or so, but right now the witch is warming up for an attempt to show you who’s the boss. The others are across the street at the malt shop. They’re hoping for a pickup to take them away before the ceremony starts.”
Vicki giggled and gave me one more kiss before she moved over a bit and started stretching with Buffy. I found myself watching the girls as they worked together to stretch hamstrings and calves. The girls seemed to enjoy my attention. Vicki had a constant smirk on her face. She seemed to have to do a large number of stretches that pushed her legs apart. Each one was positioned to show her panties to me. I pretended to be unaffected for a while, but finally turned to look at the dais.
The duo might have approached me again, but the main doors burst open and Robin stormed in followed closely by two others. I could see the fat and balding form of Principal Peters, but the other, a thin almost masculine woman was a stranger to me. Robin gave me no time to consider this as she made straight for my spot and shouted.
“So! You’ll follow the toad’s instructions, but not mine! Perhaps he’s right and I should take him and leave you here to rot! It’s clear that you don’t accept that I’m better than you are! I always have been!” she shrieked.
Principal Peters appeared a bit uncomfortable, but the woman was smirking at me as they came to stop behind my ‘wife’. She appeared to have paused to take a breath and I looked more closely at him while pondering my response.
Robin clearly had aged a bit in the last year. She was four years younger than me, but time had not been kind to her. Exercise might have removed much of the fat she had carried before the Average Joes special, but it left behind wrinkled skin that showed signs of massive solar damage. Her hair had once been full and curly, but she had it restyled. The now graying hair was in an unflattering short bob that made her appear even more severe. Her clothing did flatter what figure she had and gave her a distinguished appearance, but the scowl on her face merely gave her an aura of inapproachability. I found I wanted her to move to the head table as soon as possible.
“Hello, Robin,” I said calmly, swallowing my anger and disgust. “I hear that you are happy with your life as it is. For the most part, I’m happy with mine. How about we not change that.”
Robin screamed again and I had to reach into a pocket to grab a handkerchief and wipe her spittle off my face. She ignored this action as she went into a tirade. “If you want to be teaching in September, you’ll change your tune! I have you by the balls you limp-dicked wimp! Your only ticket off this planet is me and someday I’ll make you admit it!”
She seemed ready to go on forever, but Principal Peters pulled her away and started whispering something in her ear. He was having some success although she kept glaring at me as he pulled her towards the head table. The woman who had arrived with her looked over at Vicki and Buffy who had stopped stretching and were sitting quietly on the top seats in the bleachers.
“Vicki, Buffy! Where are the others?” she called out.
“They stopped at the malt ship across the street, Coach Matthews. Want us to run over and alert them that it’s time to set up?” Vicki asked.
The woman shook her head. “No, I’ll step out and call them over. It’s going to take Pete a few minutes to calm Robin. Do get ready, the first teams should be showing up soon.”
“Where?” Buffy asked.
I could see Coach Matthews look around and raised my hand. “Excuse me, are they here for just one number, or are they supposed to stand and cheer through the whole dinner?”
The woman glared at me and I concentrated on staring at her without fear. She seemed to want me to burst into flame, but finally she spoke. “Just one cheer and that after a few speeches. Why?”
I pointed over at the table set up furthest from the head table. “Because that table had a placard saying it’s for the Monte Vista cheerleaders. Why not have them setup close to where they are going to eat?” I said.
The woman gave me a curt nod and then pointed to the table. It was at the far side of the room from the bleachers. Vicki appeared upset by the location until she noticed that I would have a clear view of one of the chairs. She dashed over to claim that one and immediately turned the chair so she was facing me while chatting with Buffy. It was clear that the girls had some agenda, which I was not privy to.
The coach had left the hall, but moments later returned with the other four girls of the squad and led them to the table before walking the length of the hall to join my wife at the head table. I could see Robin glare at me from there, but the moment that my gaze turned to her, she wrapped her arms around Principal Peters and started rubbing her breasts against him. It came across as false, so I refused to react to her games.
