Author’s Note: Everyone loves a little drama, right? I don’t think it’s going to be an easy road for Katie and Riley, but it’s going to be a fun one. And that starts here. If you notice, I’m going back to somewhat shorter chapters right now. I needed to get back in the Traffic Girl groove, and this has helped a lot. It lets me focus on key plot points and discrete scenes, rather than more grandiose productions that it takes for the longer chapters. That also puts them in your hands sooner. Can’t wait to hear your feedback.

“Can we talk tomorrow?”

Katie held up her phone to me, and I read Riley’s reply. She left it there for a few seconds then snapped it back, burying her face in the screen. A whoop indicated she replied, and she held the screen up for me one more time.

“I’d like that.”

“Well,” I said, widening my eyes as I looked at her. “Here we go, right?”

“Here we go,” Katie repeated.

It was nearly 3 a.m. by the time we got to bed that night. But we didn’t get to sleep right away. We were exhausted, but there was a collective anxiety hanging over us. We kept chatting nervously in the dark, but it was just inane small talk. Eventually, we all drifted off at some point. For me, it was a restless night. I was struggling internally. It hurt to see Katie go through this stress. I didn’t blame her. She was caught up in the moment. I had to push down anger about the stupidity of our social media existence, but, at the same time, I couldn’t deny the role it had played in making Katie a star. I thought about how irritating it was to deal with another crisis, when we could just retreat into wealth and relaxation and the good life.

But that didn’t fit our personalities. All of us loved to push forward. We couldn’t just sit still. We always wanted more, regardless of which of our infatuation caught out attention at any given moment. Rita was loving the agency. And that was intimately coupled with Katie’s nascent music career. Kat was becoming a legitimate marijuana entrepreneur. Jess’s sex and smut businesses were shocking cash cows, throwing off more than a million dollars in profit every quarter. Our lives couldn’t be any better, yet they also seemed to only get more stressful.

I needed coffee. I reached for the night table and unplugged my phone. It was only 6:13 a.m., but I was wide awake. I slipped out of bed. We had actually paid a small fortune to have two California king beds seamlessly connected into a giant whole. As was my custom when I couldn’t sleep, I descended the stairs with practiced discipline, slowly putting my weight on the sixth step, which had a tendency to creak. In the kitchen, I put on a large pot of drip coffee and then had the espresso machine make me a double while I waited. I sipped it while I looked out the panoramic window that gave us an embarrassing view of the Hollywood Hills. The sun was almost up. It was going to be another beautiful early spring day in LA.

“That smells SO good,” I heard Rita’s husky voice say behind me.

“Let me make you one,” I said, grinning at her.

“I can do it, baby,” Rita said.

She wore a white silk robe with black polka dots on it, barely cinched at the waist.

“Good morning,” I said, pulling her close to me.

Her eyes were tired, and I moved in for a kiss. She turned to offer me her cheek, the sign that she hadn’t brushed her teeth yet. I grabbed another coffee mug and put it in place for another double espresso.

“What a night, huh?” she said, wiping the sleep out of her eyes.

“What a night,” I said.

We both watched as the espresso machine ground beans, packed them automatically, and hissed to life with a puff of steam. A steady trickle of hot, fragrant liquid released into the cup. I waited for it to finish and passed it to Rita.

“Cheers,” she said, wrapping both hands around the cup as she raised it to me.

“I couldn’t sleep,” I confessed.

“Neither could I,” she said and gulped a sip. “That’s good.”

“Is this going to work?” I said. “Or are we going to dig a hole we can’t get out of?”

“It’s a good plan,” Rita said. She hesitated.

“What?” I prodded her.

“Riley texted me,” she admitted.

“Was it before or after Katie texted her?” I asked.

“After,” she said.

“What did she say?” I asked.

Rita took another sip of her coffee. She closed her eyes.

“Riley said it sounded like a crazy gamble,” she said. “I think she’s skeptical.”

“No, you can’t walk,” Old Katie said. “I’ve got a car coming for you. I know you’re all careful about security, but this is going to have to be another level entirely, all right?”

“But I’m in a disguise,” Katie protested. “That’s not enough?”

She had a brunette, bob-cut wig on, along with a frumpy pair of jeans and a baggy sweatshirt. Massive, cheap sunglasses framed her face instead of her usual aviator Ray-Bans.

“Doesn’t matter,” Old Katie said, never looking up from her phone. “Two minutes. Let’s go.”

“You’re going to be great, girl,” Rita said.

“Just remember you’re still friends,” Kat said hopefully.

“If it goes badly, kiss her!” Jess shouted as Old Katie escorted Katie out the door.

Katie pushed the doorbell at Riley’s house, and the pop star opened it herself almost immediately. She had definitely been waiting on her.

“Come on in,” Riley said in a casual tone that did not fit the moment. “That disguise is ridiculous!”

“Thanks,” Katie said meekly. “Oh my god, can I just not?”

Katie pulled off the wig and baggy shirt and set them on the entry table, shaking out her blonde hair and feeling a little more like herself as a result.

“We can sit on the sofa, unless you want to sit outside?” Riley offered.

“Sofa is good,” Katie said.

Riley led the way but waited for Katie to choose her spot. When she did, at the far end of the large sectional, Riley sat just a couple feet from her. The not-self-declared queen of pop tucked her feet under her butt. She turned toward Katie, who mimicked the feet-tucked position and leaned against the tall arm of the couch.

“Riley, I just want to tell you how sorry I am,” Katie began. Her voice quavered. She bit her bottom lip to steady herself. “I had this crazy moment, and I swear to god if I had even taken half a second to think about what was spewing out of my stupid mouth I would never have said it. I mean, who is going to say you are anything but the undisputed Queen of Pop? I would laugh about what a ridiculous thing it was to say if it didn’t just make me cry.”

The words flowed out of her faster than if she had been coked out of her mind. But they weren’t accelerated by a drug. They were accelerated by her emotions, and when she finished spewing them out, she broke down into body-shaking tears.

“Thank you,” Riley said. “I know it was just a heat-of-the-moment thing, Katie.”

“You do?” Katie said, wiping the tears that had streamed down her cheeks.

“I do,” Riley said. “I mean, it’s water under the bridge. I won’t say it didn’t hurt in the moment. I was standing right there.”

“It was the dumbest thing, Riley,” Katie said. “I’m so, so, so sincerely sorry.”

“Katie,” Riley said seriously, her voice taking command of the room, “it’s forgotten, okay? I’ve thought about this. I remember what it was like when I first hit it big. There are so many emotions, and they are all unnatural. Maybe you didn’t handle this moment perfectly, and maybe it hurt my feelings, but people who are friends don’t always do the right thing to one another. Occasionally, people make mistakes. And when friends do that, you have to decide if what you have in the relationship is worth more than a mistake.”

“You’re talking about forgiveness,” Katie said.

“Right, yes, that’s exactly it,” Riley said.

“I hope one day you can forgive me,” Katie said.

Riley scooted forward toward Katie and reached out for her. She took her hands and said, “Katie, I already have. You got the biggest news of your music career in the middle of a concert. Who else knows what a rush you get from being up on stage alone, much less finding out you have your first number-one album at the same time? It’s a lot to deal with. I can see you’re sincere. You realize it was a momentary thing. You had a flippant moment and didn’t intend to hurt a friend. Is that worth losing a friendship over? Social media might think so, but you know me – I don’t let what the gossip cycle demands drive my decisions.”

“I would kill not to lose you as a friend,” Katie said. “Just say the word.”

“Well, if you put it that way,” Riley said and laughed. “There are a couple people I really dislike.”

The two of them laughed together. Riley squeezed Katie’s hands.

“Not the best moment,” Riley said. “But nothing we can’t get past, okay?”

“Okay,” Katie said and smiled gratefully.

The first silent break was awkward. Katie didn’t know what to say. She was relieved. Riley seemed genuine. Riley was genuine. And Riley realized she would have to take the lead in this situation.

“Honestly, when we look back on this and laugh?” Riley said. “I might be thanking you.”

Katie let out a screech-laugh and covered her mouth, embarrassed.

“Seriously,” Riley said. “I couldn’t sleep last night. You know how I get when my mind gets working on something. I’m guessing Rita and Katie told you about their plan.”

Katie nodded.

“I couldn’t get it out of my head,” Riley said, now shifting back into her normal self, like the tense moment was already a distant memory to her. “I wasn’t sure at first, but there was something tugging at the back of my brain as soon as Katie talked to me about it and took me through it.”

“Yeah?” Katie said, finding her voice. “I had my doubts initially.”

“Me, too!” Riley agreed. “There was something to it, though, and I can’t deny ... people love drama, right? Especially on social media and gossip and all the memes. I mean, have you thought about it?”

“It’s all I’ve thought about,” Katie said honestly.

“So, anyway, obviously I’m on board with the plan,” Riley said. “Are you?”
