Adam walked with Holly back down along the beach, retracing their footsteps. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see a lot of movement up amongst the dunes. The floodlight from the boat offshore had disturbed a lot of people, not just them.
Beside Adam, Holly was surreptitiously trying to pull her bikini bottoms out from between her asscheeks. She grimaced, the hand down the back of her shorts making her walking gait awkward.
Adam cleared his throat.
“You, ah, alright there?”
“I have sand in ... places.”
Adam winced.
“Shit, sorry. I thought we were being more careful than that.
“We were, but since my pants and bikini bottoms ended up on the sand, and we were in such a hurry to get dressed ... never mind. But are you sure about wanting to go back so soon?”
Adam glanced out at the dark sea towards where he knew the boat was. He’d lost track of it and now only vaguely knew its location. Adam knew there were a number of rational explanations for there being a boat offshore. He could even accept the possibility that perhaps the light illuminating the beach hadn’t been intentional ... but, all the same, something about it didn’t sit right with him.
Adam shrugged.
“Yeah, I just want to get back, check it out.”
“I understand that, Adam, but ... we didn’t actually get to finish our ‘walk’ did we?”
Adam snorted self-depreciatingly.
“I know, but it’s not like I’m going to die just because we didn’t get to finish having sex. I’ll be fine —”
Adam was interrupted by Holly slapping him across the ass.
“You jerk, I was talking about me! We both know that all you have to do is hint that you’re in the mood, and any number of women will start taking their pants off. Getting quality Adam-alone time is hard to manage. And you had only just got your dick inside me when we stopped.”
Adam couldn’t help it, he laughed. It was so unlike Holly to look so ... petulant. Even if he didn’t think she was being completely serious about it.
“Sorry — no, I’m not laughing at you, Holly. But the mood was sort of ruined. I’m sure we were being watched by those people having that threesome near us.”
Holly huffed out a breath, letting her shoulders slump. She kicked idly at the wet sand as they walked down near the shoreline.
“Yeah, I guess it was. Damn inconsiderate boats and their stupid lights ... although I get why you wanted to head back. It’s weird that it’s out there in the middle of the night. Is it still there?”
Adam peered off across the water again. There was still barely any waves, but the swell made spotting a dark shape out on the ocean almost impossible. Added to that, they were now lower than they had been up amongst the dunes.
“No, I can’t see it anymore. I lost it when we started walking.”
“I thought all boats had to have lights on at night.”
Adam shrugged.
“That sounds right, but I don’t know for sure.”
“How big was it anyway?”
“Uh, maybe fishing trawler size? I don’t know boats. But I’m sure I saw something like a cabin on the deck. So decently big?”
Holly rubbed at her arm, musing.
“Adam, do you think that —”
“Hey! Holly, Adam - Hi!”
A shout from behind them on the beach made them both turn. Adam was surprised to see Kalista hurrying up to them. Her face was flushed and she looked a little unsure of her welcome. Added to that, the smile she wore was slightly too big to be natural.
Holly flashed Adam a quick glance, and then casually stepped a little further away from him. Adam blinked at that, but he was mostly interested to see that Holly was peering back up along the beach behind Kalista. Was she looking for someone?
Holly raised a hand in greeting.
“Kalista, hey! Fancy seeing you out here. I guess the whole resort is out on the beach tonight.”
When Adam didn’t immediately say anything, Holly nudged his ankle with her foot. He started, and then smiled at Kalista.
“Hey, I wondered if I’d get to talk to you tonight. I don’t think your Mom really approves of me.”
Holly nudged him in the ribs for some reason as Kalista’s smile grew oddly fixed. She smiled at Kalista, again glancing past the girl towards the seemingly empty beach.
“Are you out here by yourself?”
Kalista flushed a darker shade of pink, and let out a too-casual laugh.
“Hardly! Like you said, it’s like half the people staying here on the beach. No, I was, uh, just wandering. I felt like stretching my legs, and then I saw you two.”
Holly nodded easily, taking it at face value.
“See that light? Although that’s a stupid question — I had spots in front of my eyes, it was so bright.”
Kalista shuffled her feet, burying her toes in the sand.
“Yeah, we stopped when we — I mean, it lit up the whole beach, didn’t it? I thought I may as well head back to the fires. Beat the exodus of people with the same idea.”
Adam studied the much shorter girl. She seemed softer than the last time he’d spent time with her. More ... unguarded? Definitely less composed. Her hair was also in a mess. Kalista had thick hair at the best of times, but now it formed a veritable halo around her head, stiff with salt and the sea breeze. Adam actually thought it suited her, more so than any attempts at taming it. He smiled at her, his tone light and teasing.
“Beating the rush was a good idea. Although you look a bit rattled — see something you wish you hadn’t with that light?”
For some reason Holly shot Adam a frown, and she shook her head slightly. As if to prove her right, Kalista’s face went even pinker at Adam’s words, even though she kept her face reasonably blank. She couldn’t help but glance guiltily between Adam and Holly though.
Oh. Oooh. Maybe she’d seen them? They hadn’t exactly been the most discreet, relying on the fact that everyone else had seemed quite preoccupied. If that was the case, Adam got why Holly didn’t want to push things, but he personally found it hard to care. They were all adults, and no-one was cheating on anyone else. Although Adam did admit that Kalista wasn’t aware of that. Holly was quick to address it though.
“So, Kalista, is your time already spoken for when you get back? I know Kendra would be happy to see you. You should come hang out at our bonfire! Kendra would have come on our little walk, but she already spent most of the afternoon with Adam here.”
Holly slapped Adam casually on the back, her own cheeks growing slightly pink at what she was insinuating. Adam wondered why she felt the need to clarify it, but most of his attention was on the fact that she’d just invited Kalista back to their fire. He liked Kalista, and he’d normally be all for it, but he worried that having someone that wasn’t part of their group would stifle things. They had all been assuming that their fire would be nominally private after all.
Adam cleared his throat.
“Ah, Holly —
Holly flapped her hand back and forth in Adam’s direction, keeping her attention on Kalista. The girl glanced at Adam, hesitating.
“Are you sure? I’d like to say hello to Kendra, but I don’t want to intrude. And I really don’t feel like going back to my room yet.”
Holly cocked her head to one side, studying Kalista. Once again, she glanced past the girl up to where she had walked from.
“Well that settles it, you are definitely coming back with us. Why would you go back to your room so early? Everyone is down at the beach having fun. Actually, come here a second — you have sand all over you.”
Holly moved around behind Kalista, and casually brushed at the girls behind — cleaning the sand off of her rear. She did the same to Kalista’s back and upper thighs, and Adam blinked at seeing how much sand came off of her. It was almost a cloud! Adam was surprised that Kalista had been walking around with that much sand on her; it had to have been uncomfortable.
Adam frowned, and looked at Kalista closer. Now that he was paying more attention, Kalista looked quite disheveled — it wasn’t just her hair. All her clothing was rumpled, her shirt only tucked into her shorts on one side. In fact, she kind of looked like Holly. Like her clothes had been put back on in a hurry...
Kalista blushed at Holly familiarly running her hand over her, but she didn’t try to move away. In fact, in some ways she seemed resigned to being handled so casually — something that made Holly immediately back away when she realised that the girl was subtly tensing against her touch.
Kalista smiled weakly.
“Thanks, Holly. I guess sand just gets everywhere, doesn’t it? I, um, tripped earlier. It was dark, and I guess someone had been digging a hole on the beach...”
Holly nodded, her eyes watchful even as she smiled back.
“Yeah, I get it. Things happen, right? Come on, let’s get back. Have you eaten? I’m not sure about the other fires, but you have to see the spread we have laid out. It really pays to be friendly with the owner...”
Adam watched Kalista thoughtfully as Holly gently ushered the girl back towards the fires.
“Adam! You’re finally back! Well, actually you’re back way sooner than I expected. Holly, babe. You must be losing your touch! I knew I should have — oh. Hey, Kalista! How — how’s it going?”
Kendra flushed as she realised that they had come back with an extra person. She had been so fixated on Adam that she hadn’t noticed at first. Kendra crossed her arms in front of her chest, trying to appear casual and relaxed but not quite managing it. She’d undressed since Adam and Holly had left, and was now only wearing a rather skimpy bikini.
Kalista nodded at Kendra, looking a bit shy but seeming to admire the older blonde’s swimsuit.
“Heya, Kendra. Sorry — I saw these two while I was, ah, going for a walk. They invited me back.”
Holly gently nudged Kalista, pretending to scold her.
“Don’t apologise. There’s no need. It’s good to see her, right, K?”
“Uh, yeah. Yeah! It’s been ages since we caught up, Kalista. Come on, let me get you a drink. Incredibly alcoholic fruit punch okay? I don’t know what’s in it, but it’s tasty.”
Adam saw his sister turn from where she had been refilling her glass at the drinks table. She still had a frown on her face, but she didn’t appear to be directing it at anyone in particular. She swayed slightly as she walked over to where Kendra and Kalista were standing. Emily sniffed as she looked disdainfully at the younger woman. Her voice was slightly overloud.
“Did I hear that you went for a ‘walk’. Lot of that going around. Adam and Holly went for a walk. Was yours as fun as theirs?”
Kalista’s eyes went wide, and then her brows snapped down. Her cheeks were red, but she sounded angry.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Is that a ‘no’? I guess it depends on the partner. Or partners.”
Emily raised her glass, missed the straw the first time she went for it, and then started determinedly sucking on it. Erin walked up and put a hand on her daughter’s shoulder, but Emily just shrugged it off.
Kalista clenched her fists by her side.
“I don’t know what you’re implying, but —”
Emily tossed her head, accidentally whipping herself in the cheek with her own hair. She blew it away from her face.
“What’s this talk about implying? I meant what I meant. Geez, touchy little thing, aren’t you? Having regrets about some of your choices?”
Kalista looked outraged — and mortified. It was such a complicated expression that it even made Emily take a second look. Erin touched her arm, murmuring softly to her daughter.
“Emily...”
“What? I didn’t ... say anything...”
Emily went back to her drink, but she looked ever so slightly ashamed of herself. Delilah stepped in between them all, and held out her hand to Kalista. Her eyes flickered up and down the teenager, but she looked vaguely concerned — not interested.
“Lovely to see you again, young lady — although I’m not sure if we’ve formally met. I hope you’ve been enjoying your stay?”
As Kalista talked with Delilah, some of her ire fading, Adam sidled over to Holly. He’d noticed Delilah’s expression, one that had mirrored Holly’s.
“Am I missing something here?”
Holly shrugged.
“Probably. But ... I might be wrong. Although...”
“What?”
Holly took a deep breath.
“Your sister — for all that she’s currently displaying a level of tact that your father would be proud of — seems to have partly come to the same conclusion. If she wasn’t so drunk I dare say she would have noticed the rest. Emily can be remarkably observant, a fact that she rammed down my throat earlier today. But she’s not always ... kind.”
Adam glanced back at his sister. She was standing alone with her shoulders hunched. Their mother had joined Delilah and Kendra in trying to make Kalista feel welcome. To Adam, his sister didn’t currently look like a good example of someone being observant.
“Emily? I get that she was implying Kalista was hooking up with someone, but there’s nothing wrong with that, right? I thought you were just worried that she’d seen the two of us at the beach.”
Adam blinked as something else that Holly had said registered with him.
“Wait, what did you mean — about Emily being observant earlier today? Did something happen? Is that why she’s acting like that?”
Holly lips twisted slightly.
“I think Kalista probably did see us. But I don’t really care about that. As for your sister — well, I ended up telling her about as much as I told Kendra this morning.”
Adam gaped, forgetting about Kalista for the moment.
“ ... you what?”
Holly gave Adam a slightly worried look, but she didn’t back down either.
“Yeah — I felt like it was the right moment. And it’s not like you weren’t going to anyway.”
“Yeah, eventually. But —”
Holly placed a hand on Adam’s arm.
“Adam, I wasn’t trying to blindside you with it. And I would have told you sooner, but ... things seem to happen really fast with you sometimes. I just didn’t have the chance.”
Adam covered his eyes for a second, taking a deep breath.
“Holly, I’m not upset, it’s just ... I can’t believe you did that without talking to me first. And it’s obviously affecting Emily — look how she’s acting!”
“I see that, but in my defence I didn’t feel like I had a choice. Emily had a lot of what was going on put together already — even if she didn’t know the specifics. And how could she? But most of it, it was the same conclusions that I had come to. And while you were talking it over with Kendra, your sister just flat out asked me what was going on. She knew something was up when Kendra went to talk to you alone. And ... I didn’t want to lie to her. Not just because of my morals — Emily would have known.”
Adam took a deep breath. He wasn’t angry exactly; it was like a symptom. Something else was unsettling him, and Holly didn’t deserve to have it taken out on her.
“I’m sorry if I snapped at you, Holly. But I noticed there was something off with Emily earlier, but I didn’t do anything about it because I didn’t know. I should have asked, but it didn’t seem that bad.”
Adam cast a look back at his sister. She’d moved to stand back with their mother, and the two of them were quietly talking. Emily was still frowning, but she was looking at the ground more often than not. She’d refilled her drink again too.
Holly followed Adam’s gaze, and hesitated.
“Yeah, I thought she was fine. I mean, nothing worse than how Kendra got. I get that the timing sucked, but when I was talking to her — she seemed almost relieved. Perhaps a little fatalistic, but nothing worse than what I expected.”
“She doesn’t look fine now. And why was she having a go at Kalista like that?”
Holly raised a finger, and then looked aside. Her voice was a little weak and oddly diplomatic.
