Adam loaded up his paper plate with a bit of everything. Seafood, sliders, salad, potatoes, sausages ... it all looked so good as he perused the table of food by Delilah’s fire. He was having to go carefully by the end, the mountain of food he had created was getting unstable.
Kendra looked faintly horrified and half impressed as she stared at Adam’s plate.
“ ... you know you could just go back for seconds, big guy?”
Adam blinked at her.
“I ... know?”
Erin and Emily walked over to gawk as well. Adam had thought that his sister had been standoffish with their mother since they arrived on the beach, but he hadn’t had a chance to ask them about it yet. They seemed unified in dismay at the moment however.
Emily nudged her mother with her elbow.
“I don’t think Adam was raised right, Mom.”
Erin had covered her mouth with one hand, but her eyes were dancing with suppressed mirth.
“You may be right, Emily. Even ... before, I still would have stepped in had I seen something like this.”
Adam looked down at his plate.
“What am I doing wrong?”
Emily snickered.
“Nothing Adam, nothing at all.”
Adam shrugged, adding a few pieces of asparagus that had been wrapped in bacon and grilled. They kept rolling off of his plate, so he just stuck them end-first in amongst the potatoes. Everything looked fine to him. Sure, some of the dressing from the salad was getting mixed in with the seafood, but it was sort of the same kind of flavour right? He was sure it would still taste good.
Kendra walked over and tugged on Holly’s arm.
“Holly, that’s such an affront to good food, that I think I might be getting offended.”
Holly patted her fiancee’s hand.
“Just think of it as something you can work on, K. Everyone has got to have a few flaws.”
“Yeah ... but that?”
Adam felt vaguely indignant by the banter, but decided to ignore them and just enjoy his food. He pointedly wandered away from the fire as he ate.
It was a very picturesque night. The flickering bonfires that dotted along the beach were surrounded by people. The background hum of conversation, punctuated by laughing, was a pleasant counterpoint to the sound of the water lapping against the shore.
Delilah walked up next to Adam, standing close enough that their bodies were touching. Once the night had truly rolled in she had discarded the sarong she’d been wearing around her hips, and was now only in her bikini. Adam couldn’t help but appreciate the way the warm light from the fire danced across her ivory skin. Delilah was also holding a plate, but hers held a more modest selection of seafood. She raised an eyebrow at Adam.
“That’s an ... interesting arrangement you have there, Adam.”
Adam sighed. He held his plate closer to his chest as though protecting it from further criticism. Adam’s voice was slightly plaintive.
“Not you as well. I can’t help it if I’m hungry.”
Delilah let out a throaty chuckle.
“Oh, I’m not judging you. Even if it’s only because I don’t wish to weigh in on the underlying cause. Besides, I’m sure you will have plenty of others taking you to task. Even if they are currently otherwise occupied.”
The two of them turned to watch the other women at their fire. Kendra and Holly were still standing together, talking quietly. Adam thought that Kendra had a somewhat serious look on her face, but it was alleviated by the fact that Holly had her arm resting comfortably around Kendra’s waist.
Now that Adam had left, his sister and mother were being awkward again. He thought that it was more Emily though. His sister kept glancing away as they spoke, while at the same time sneaking glances at their mother when she thought she wasn’t looking.
Adam gestured towards them with one of the bacon-wrapped asparagus.
“Do you know what that’s about?”
Delilah shook her head.
“No idea I’m afraid. Your mother surprised me somewhat — she was remarkably blasé about the idea of you taking your sister to bed. She even approved. So I imagine the strange dance they are doing is more to do with Emily. And you would know more about that than I.”
Adam had coughed slightly at hearing Delilah speak so matter of factly about his mother and sister. He knew that it didn’t really matter — he could hardly ascribe normal morality to their situation — but it had still caught him off guard. Adam had yet to really speak to his mother since he had bound his sister.
Adam looked at Delilah out of the corner of his eye.
“Is that something you’ve been discussing in depth, or just in passing?”
Delilah popped a prawn into her mouth.
“Fairly in depth. Erin finds it fascinating. Dare I say, titillating. But she’s not so crass to just come out and say something to your sister. You didn’t notice anything with Emily?”
Adam shook his head.
“No, she was fine this morning. And she was with Holly all afternoon — Kendra and I had a big talk.”
“Hmm. Well, I’m glad you had it out with young Kendra. It was well overdue. And as for your sister, if you are concerned about it, you could just go over there and ask. But it seems like it might be sorted out without you.”
As they watched, they saw that Erin had a slightly desperate look on her face. Her daughter was rebuffing her every time that she tried to talk to her. Not rudely, but she appeared to be just shaking her head or giving one word answers. Adam recalled that his mother and sister didn’t really have a history of spending time together or talking to begin with.
Erin gestured over towards the second table — the one that was laden down with drinks and pre-made cocktails in large glass dispensers full of ice. Emily, her face set, appeared to sigh. She nodded her head reluctantly. Mother and daughter poured themselves rather large glasses and started to drink them steadily.
Delilah sighed ruefully.
“Alcohol might not be the healthiest thing, but it should get them talking at least. I don’t think it’s anything you need to worry about. Well, now that everyone seems to be occupied for the moment, we can get to your request.”
“Sorry, what?”
“You asked me to point out the women who Todd ... interacted with? The two of them still here at Serenity Falls anyway. They are here, around the fires, but I don’t know how long for.”
Adam sighed. He placed his plate down on one of the tables. He hadn’t finished it yet, but Delilah was right. And it was probably best to just get it over with, even though he feared that it would intrude upon the good vibes for the rest of the evening.
“Okay, let’s go. Should we say something, let the others know where we’ll be?”
Delilah shook her head. She’d given him a considering look when he’d sighed. Delilah reached out and took Adam by the hand, leading him away back down the beach.
“No, they can live without you for a while. And they’ll just assume we are looking for a more ... private spot for a bit.”
Adam eyed Delilah as she led him across the sand. She always looked beautiful, but she was particularly enchanting by firelight. It didn’t hurt that she was wearing a very skimpy bikini — although that wasn’t quite fair. It was more accurate to say that any swimsuit tended to look scandalous when it was trying to contain Delilah’s curves.
“And are we? Looking for a more private spot?”
Delilah laughed, squeezing Adam’s hand.
“If you want to. Personally, I prefer a bedroom over the beach. You have to be so careful that sand doesn’t become intimately involved. But if you truly can’t wait, we can walk into the dunes and you can use my mouth.”
Adam barked out a laugh. He could already see speculative glances from guests around the fires, wondering who he was to be walking hand in hand with Delilah. She tended to draw focus.
“Just like that, huh?”
Delilah hugged Adam’s arm to her, her breasts squeezing up against him.
“I’ll enjoy it almost as much as you, Adam. And that’s saying something.”
Adam smiled, turning so that he could absently plant a kiss atop Delilah’s head. He was beginning to sense something again, something wrong out amongst the fires. It put paid to any amorous thoughts.
“Maybe later, Delilah. Can you see the two women?”
“Hmm. Yes, I think I see the first one. And afterwards I hope you tell me what all this is about. There she is — the woman with the long braid down her back. With the white shorts.”
Adam knew who Delilah was talking about even before she pointed. He spotted the woman immediately; she was giving him the same feeling that his aunt had.
The woman in question was older than Adam had thought to see, at least forty, but she still looked attractive for all that. She had long brownish-blonde hair tied back in a braid, and was wearing a dark tank top with white pants. She was busty, and perhaps a little thicker around her waist, hips, and ass than Adam had expected. He wondered, perhaps uncharitably, if she had been a target of opportunity for Todd, rather than someone he had aimed for.
“I see her. I can feel — yeah, I see her. What’s her name, do you know?”
Delilah slid an arm around Adam’s waist, leaning her head against his shoulder in a pretext so that she could speak quietly by his ear.
“Her name is Shauna, forty-four years old, married with two children. They are staying with her sister while she is vacationing here. I know because there was a note in her file where she asked if it was an appropriate place to bring them. Both her children are under ten.”
“Fuck, she has kids?”
Adam focused his attention on the woman. She ... seemed alright. She was smiling and laughing with a man about her age — probably her husband. Shauna didn’t give off quite the same energy that his aunt had. It wasn’t as concentrated.
Delilah continued.
“Some of my staff found her in the dunes early one morning. She had been making a habit of going for a swim as soon as she woke up. From what I have pieced together about the timeline, I suspect that she was the first woman that Todd interacted with — at least, it was the morning after I saw him down on the beach.”
“Was she ... alright?”
Delilah shrugged slightly.
“As well as can be expected. Slightly disheveled. A little confused. My staff thought that she’d been drinking and had been having a rather eventful time down amongst the dunes. They initially had some concerns she’d been assaulted, but she vehemently denied any such thing. Apparently she was slightly vague for days afterwards — her husband, the man down there by her side, thought she might have been coming down with something. Had her checked out. But it didn’t seem to last that long.”
“And Todd didn’t take her again?”
“Not as far as I can tell ... Adam, what’s going on? Is there something I don’t know?”
Adam shook his head as he stared down across the sand at Shauna. She seemed ... fine. He wondered if it was because Todd hadn’t intended to keep her, or if he just hadn’t known what he was doing at the time. From what Todd had said, it seemed like he had been fumbling around, trying to simply ‘blank’ women so that he could take them. He’d failed with Fiona, had succeeded with her mother. But even Tessa...
“I thought that — no, she seems okay. I can ... feel something from her, Delilah. But it’s faint. And it doesn’t look like she’s been affected.”
“Hmm ... okay. I did tell you that I’d kept an eye on them, Adam. Especially after I found out that he had been interrupted with Britt. Come along, I think I see the second one over by the next fire.”
Adam had begun to think he had gotten lucky. Fiona, Britt, the older woman, Shauna ... Todd seemed to have fucked up everything he tried to do. The most trauma he had inflicted had been upon Tessa — and Adam privately wondered if some of that had been due to whatever his father had done to her once Todd had left her alone with him.
Then Adam remembered what Todd had done to Delilah, and his feeling of relief vanished. Even if he had been controlled, Todd had still been monstrous with what he had done. What he had been ranting about ... it had been similar to what Adam had read in the later pages of the journals.
“There she is. Ava. The girl standing between that couple. The one in the jeans and ... hmm. Oh dear.”
Adam’s heart sank. Again, he felt that sense of wrongness ... but it was far stronger this time. Just as bad as Tessa’s.
The girl in question seemed to be overdressed for the occasion. She was in jeans and a large baggy top. She was standing, her shoulders hunched, and she had her arms wrapped around her waist.
She was young — young enough that Adam was at first concerned — but Delilah hastened to add that she was nineteen. Even with the baggy clothes, Adam could see that she was quite slender and lithe — only her hands and face were showing, but her skin was a sun-kissed brown. Ava had short black hair, styled in a pixie-cut that framed her face quite flatteringly. She was very pretty, and was more in line with the kind of target that Adam had been expecting Todd to go for.
As Adam and Delilah watched, Ava just shook her head mutely as the older couple she was standing between — her parents — tried to talk to her. She seemed to shrink in on herself, and she looked around the beach with such an expression of wary trepidation that —
“Fuck.”
Adam’s hands clenched by his side as he looked at Ava. Everything about her screamed damage. There was nothing that would let him dismiss it like he had with Shauna. This girl had something wrong with her.
Delilah had a concerned expression on her face, and she was looking between Ava and Adam.
“Adam, what’s going on?”
Adam shook his head, muttering under his breath.
He started to stalk up along the beach.
“Come on, let’s get a bit further away...”
As soon as they left the light from the bonfires, Adam started to fill Delilah in on all that had changed over the last few days. His suspicions about what could be done with the powers from the Cave, the differences when he bound Emily, and the fact that the women that Todd had been with were more damaged than they had realised.
Delilah was silent for a long moment, then she took hold of Adam’s arm.
“ ... all of them? What about Britt?”
“I ... don’t know, Delilah. I never noticed anything about my aunt until after I bound Emily. I don’t feel anything about Fiona though, and from what I understand Todd did more with her than Britt. But I can have a look at her. No, I should go and see her.”
Delilah chewed on her thumbnail, her brow furrowed with worry.
“She hasn’t seemed to be any different. I haven’t noticed anything, anyway. But that girl, Ava, clearly has changed. She seems very ... wary. My understanding is that she barely wore more than her swimsuit her first week here. But now it looks like if she wasn’t by the fire she’d be wearing a coat as well.”
Adam nodded.
“That’s my take as well. Can you find out how much longer she’s staying here? Shauna as well, but I think she’s in better condition than Ava.”
“Why — I mean, I will. But what can you do?”
“ ... I don’t know. But I want to at least see if I can feel any more. I would try with Tessa, but my aunt dislikes me so much anyway that she —”
Delilah reached up and cupped Adam’s face.
“Adam, don’t take on more than you need to.”
“Delilah, I —”
The raven-haired woman shook her head firmly.
