Delilah walked back through the dunes to the hidden track, finding both Kendra and Holly crouched by Kalista’s side. The ATV that they’d travelled in had stopped so suddenly that it had skidded into the underbrush, currently resting up against a tree with the motor still running.

Kendra had her hand on Kalista’s shoulder, and was frantically patting at the younger woman.

“My god, she’s covered in blood! Holly, is she okay?”

Holly was as low to the ground as she could be, trying to see Kalista’s face.

“Don’t move her, Kendra. I’m trying to — no, she’s still breathing. Fuck, what happened to her? Where’s Delilah? Did she miss her lying here?”

Delilah walked closer, her footsteps on the leaf litter alerting the two other women. Their heads whipped around to face her. Delilah crouched down with them.

“I was just checking the beach.”

Kendra looked at her incredulously.

“Didn’t you see her?”

“I did. But I needed to make sure that it was safe first.”

Kendra’s voice rose as Holly frowned. The blonde wiped away some angry tears as she glared at Delilah.

“So you just left her here? She’s just lying on the dirt!

Delilah took a slow breath.

“I checked on her first. But it was important to make sure everything was safe. That whoever did this wasn’t still here. A few extra minutes wasn’t going to make a difference.”

Both Holly and Kendra stared at Delilah. Their faces looked incredulous — and also confused. Like they hadn’t expected Delilah to be so callous.

Kendra just pointed at the prone Kalista.

“How could you — she’s covered in blood!”

“Yes, and I don’t want it to happen to anyone else. But I don’t think the blood is hers.”

Holly hesitated, and then crouched down for a closer look. Kalista was battered, and her clothing was dishevelled. Her head was tilted to one side, and her face was sheeted with blood — particularly around her mouth.

The brunette examined Kalista’s head and scalp with a careful hand.

“I’m not sure if — Kendra, I think she’s right. Look, there are some scrapes and cuts on her arms and legs, but I don’t see any large cuts. And there’s no blood in her hair so it wasn’t a scalp wound. Unless her hands are —”

Holly drew in a sharp breath. She’d carefully rolled Kalista slightly to one side, and discovered what her body had been hiding. Her hands were bound together. They hadn’t been able to see them as she’d been lying on her front.

Kendra gasped, horrified.

“She’s tied up?”

Now knowing that Kalista wasn’t as injured as she’d feared, Holly moved her fully onto her side. As soon as she looked closer at Kalista’s bound hands, she hissed.

“Oh, fuck — look at her hands. That’s way too tight. We have to get this untied.”

Delilah was crouched, watching them both. She seemed eerily calm, and she was alternating between looking at them and the undergrowth. Her voice was steady.

“Another reason I wanted to check first. I don’t think she was dumped here. I think she ran.”

Kendra didn’t bother responding to Delilah. She was gently stroking at Kalista’s hair, patting at her face while talking to her softly. Holly was struggling to get the bonds untied, but the knot had been pulled so tight that she couldn’t get it started.

“Kalista? Honey, can you hear me? Holly, are you —”

“I’m trying, Kendra. But it’s so tight!”

Delilah reached into her pocket and pulled out a folding knife. She handed it to Holly.

“Here, use this. Careful, it’s very sharp.”

Delilah got to her feet and walked around some, examining the ground. While she did, Holly carefully sliced at the cord around Kalista’s hand. The strands parted easily, pulling free one by one. Kalista’s hands were pale and discoloured, reddened and swollen below where she was tied.

Holly gently rubbed at Kalista’s wrists, and they heard the first sounds from the girl. She didn’t open her eyes, but Kalista whimpered — curling up slightly while cradling her hands to her chest. She tried to pull away from Holly.

The brunette looked frustrated and worried, but she kept her voice soft as she rubbed.

“Shh, sweetie. I know. I know it must hurt. Kalista, can you hear me?”

Kendra swallowed, and wiped her eyes again.

“We never should have left her last night. Do you — do you think she was...?”

Holly shook her head as she kept up ministering to Kalista’s wrists.

“I don’t know, Kendra.”

Kendra leant in closer.

“There’s so much blood on her face! And on her teeth? Do you think she bit her tongue? Should we check?”

Delilah ceased in her pacing and stopped by the three of them again. She looked down, studying Kalista. When she spoke, her voice was oddly approving.

“I don’t think that’s it. See how it’s all smeared around her mouth and lips, sheeting down her chin? I think she bit someone else.”

Holly stilled for a moment, and she looked up at Delilah. Her voice was tight, controlled.

“Do you think you can act like you care? Even a little? We need to get Kalista help. I’m not sure if there’s something else wrong with her, but we need to get her checked out.”

Kendra nodded vigorously.

“Yeah. Are there any doctors staying here? Delilah, do you know? Oh no, and her mom is looking for her too. How are we going to tell her?”

Delilah squatted down next to them again. She was brusque, but not unkind as she moved Holly out of the way. Delilah slid her hands underneath Kalista, and scooped her up into her arms. She was heedless of the dirt and sticky blood as she stood, cradling the slender young woman to her chest.

“Let’s get her back to my house. We can clean her up there.”

Kendra blinked.

“What? I thought we should — I guess we can get someone to come up to your place. But wouldn’t it be better to take her straight to the Retreat and her parents?”

Delilah shook her head. She was already walking — not towards the ATV, but up the track.

“No. We don’t tell anyone what happened. We’ll examine her at my house. Find out what she saw.”

Kendra and Holly exchanged glances, their mouths open. Then they ran and stood in front of Delilah, blocking her path. Kendra held out a hand.

“What? That’s crazy! She needs help!”

Delilah stopped. It was either that or run into the two younger women. She adjusted Kalista in her arms.

“Yes. And we will help her.”

“No. I mean real help.”

Holly nodded. She stepped in closer to Delilah, reaching out like she was going to take Kalista from her.

“Kendra’s right. This is way too serious to keep quiet. Kalista has family looking for her. This isn’t ... isn’t like what happened to you.”

Kendra gasped quietly, her eyes widening as she remembered. Delilah just gave Holly a mirthless mile. An almost pitying look in her eyes.

“I fear that it’s exactly like what happened to me. Think. Neither of you are foolish girls. This is bigger than just Kalista, and she isn’t the only factor we need to be worried about.”

Holly had recoiled from Delilah’s look, like she had never truly seen her before. But then a stubborn expression came over her face.

“No. I get why you’re worried. But we aren’t hiding this. We can’t.”

Kendra broke in, glaring.

“Yeah! And Kalista isn’t a ‘factor’.”

Delilah huffed out an exasperated breath.

“Until I know what happened last night, no one outside of us is going to find out. Understand?”

Holly’s voice was soft but challenging as she stared at Delilah. She looked like she wanted to grab Kalista — only the fact that she was concerned about injuring the girl stopping her.

“What, so you can protect this place?”

Delilah’s voice was steady. Flat.

“No. It’s to protect you. Us. And Adam. Don’t just react emotionally. Think.”

At that, Delilah pushed past them. Holly and Kendra glanced at each other, looking sick. Then Kendra hurried after Delilah.

“Wait — shouldn’t we take her in the ATV?”

Delilah just shook her head.

“No, it’ll be too rough for her. And it’s not fast enough. Follow me as quick as you can.”

Delilah started to carefully jog up the hill — trying not to jostle Kalista. She was far slower than when she had run down, but she was still moving at an impressive pace. Kendra and Holly stared for a moment, and then ran for the ATV.

Delilah had laid Kalista down on her sofa, and was carefully sponging some of the blood off of her face when Kendra and Holly caught up. They were quiet as they entered Delilah’s house, reserved. The walked up to the sofa and stared down at Kalista for a few moments.

It was Kendra who cleared her throat, breaking their silence.

“What did you mean when you said this is to protect Adam?”

Delilah didn’t answer straight away. She kept wiping Kalista’s cheeks with a damp cloth. The dried blood was coming off, but it was smearing. Staining Kalista’s skin red. Even though her hands were gentle, her voice was hard.

“I don’t believe in coincidences. That this happened last night, on that beach ... It’s far too close. Adam was worried that it wasn’t over yet. I should have listened. And Kalista ... I don’t believe this was a case of a girl wandering where she shouldn’t. It’s more than that.”

Kendra and Holly looked at each other. It was Holly who took up the questioning.

“So you think someone else has been there? Someone else at the Retreat that we don’t know about?”

Delilah shook her head as she rubbed at Kalista’s lips. The girl murmured and tried to turn her head, but Delilah carefully held her still.

“No, not at the Serenity Falls. There hasn’t been a sign of that anywhere. When I checked the beach, I also looked out to sea. That boat was gone.”

“You think it was them?”

“In any other circumstance, if they had vanished by this morning, I would have never given them a second thought. But the fact that Kalista was attacked ... No. It may be unrelated still, but I doubt it.”

Kendra walked around and sat down on the sofa opposite Kalista. She rubbed her face, looking tired and heartsick as she looked at the battered girl.

“Has she said anything, Delilah?”

“Only murmurs. Mumbles. She cried out a few times as I carried her, but I don’t think it was from pain. She’s mostly unhurt, apart from scrapes and quite an egg on her forehead, just under her hairline.”

Holly sighed.

“Delilah. I understand where you’re coming from, but I don’t think we can do it. We have to tell Kalista’s parents we found her. It’s the right thing to do. I’m sure Adam would agree.”

Delilah sighed as well.

“I’m sure he would. Why do you think I haven’t contacted him yet? This is a case of where we have to protect Adam from himself. And you say we should tell Mirela we found her daughter? What would you have me say to her? That we found Kalista bloodied and unconscious? Bound hand and foot? Yes, there are weals on her ankles as well. More evidence that she escaped herself, for why would her feet be freed but not her hands?”

Kendra looked conflicted, but she couldn’t take her eyes off of Kalista’s face.

“Don’t they deserve to know? Her mother, I mean.”

Delilah’s mouth was set in a hard line.

“Deserve? What does that have to do with anything. We should just be grateful that Mirela and Kalista had their falling out when they did. Their parting means that Mirela is unsure if something has indeed befallen her daughter, or if Kalista is just avoiding her.”

Kendra shivered.

“That’s ... cold.”

“No. That’s practicality.”

Holly gripped the back of the sofa hard enough that her knuckles were white.

“We can’t just keep her here though.”

“I never said we would. But before we make any decisions, I want to hear from the girl what happened.”

Kendra bit her lip.

“If you’re right — and I hope you’re not — did you see anything on ... that beach? You can’t have looked for that long, we weren’t that far behind you.”

Delilah finished cleaning Kalista’s face, and put the damp cloth in a bowl on the side table. She rocked back on her heels, and stretched her back.

“Yes, I checked. You haven’t been there, have you? It’s a very small cove. Nowhere to hide. And no, there was no Cave or opening in the cliff.”

Holly looked thoughtful, her brow furrowing.

“And no tracks or signs?”

Delilah shook her head.

“Not even any of Kalista’s making. The tide has changed, and that beach ... it is pebbles and stones, not sand. The marks of someone’s passage don’t stand out as much.”

None of them spoke for a few moments, with all three of them staring down at Kalista. The girl was remarkably unscathed once she had been cleaned. The worst of her injuries were scrapes and cuts on her hands — like she’d been gripping something jagged and sharp.

Delilah turned to Kendra.

“Could you get me some disinfectant? It’s in my bathroom cupboard. We really should clean her hands.”

Kendra silently stood up and walked into Delilah’s bedroom. It seemed unreal that they had all been entwined on the bed, naked and carefree, less than an hour before. Kendra returned, handing Delilah a small bottle and a cloth.

As Delilah started to wash and clean out Kalista’s cuts and scrapes, the girl began to stir. Her brow creased, and her head began to turn from side to side. Kalista’s eyes were still closed, but she pulled her hands away from Delilah, raising them up to her face. She rubbed at her eyes, wincing as she found them gummed shut.

Holly leant forward.

“Kalista? Are you okay—”

At Holly’s words, Kalista went rigid. She tried to sit up, scrabbled with her feet on the sofa, propelling herself backwards. Kalista blinked rapidly, staring at the three women without recognition. When Kendra reached for her, Kalista batted the blonde’s hand away.

Kendra looked pained at the younger woman’s reaction, but her voice was gentle.

“Kalista, honey — it’s me, Kendra. Holly’s here too. You’re safe now, I promise.”

Kalista stared at her unseeing, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she panted. Her hands clenched into fists, and she winced again — staring down at her battered hands. Then she seemed to realise who was with her, and she began to calm down.

“Kendra? Holly? What —”

Kalista’s expression changed, and she clutched at her head. When she looked up again, her complexion was green. Delilah wordlessly handed the girl a large bowl — just in time, as Kalista snatched it and bent her face down into it where she was noisily sick. She kept her head bowed for almost a minute, her shoulder heaving. She spat a few times into the bowl, trying to clear her mouth.

Holly hurriedly ran to get her a glass of water. Kalista took it from her wordlessly and drank deeply. She didn’t swallow though. Kalista just rinsed her mouth back and forth before spitting it all into the bowl. She repeated this two more times until the glass was empty.

Kalista looked up at them, stilling looking sick, but no longer as though she was about to throw up. As Delilah took the bowl from her, the young woman spoke.

“Can you get me a toothbrush? I feel like I’ve got something in my —”

Kalista looked green again. Delilah nodded, although Holly and Kendra just looked confused. The dark-haired woman rose, going into her bedroom, and returning with a toothbrush already laden with paste. She handed it to Kalista, and then carried the bowl to the sink where she emptied and rinsed it. When Delilah carried the bowl back, she watched as Kalista vigorously cleaned her teeth. She nodded, looking approvingly at the girl.

“Don’t focus on the disgust. You did what you had to. Well done.”

Kalista blinked, but then gave Delilah a slow nod. She spat out into the bowl, and then shuddered.

“I don’t think I’m ever going to forget what that felt like.”

When Kendra still looked confused, Holly mimed biting someone to her fiancee. Kendra stared down into the bowl, looking like she might want to throw up herself.

Delilah watched Kalista for a few moments to make sure she wasn’t in danger of being sick again. Then she softly began to question the girl.

“Kalista, do you remember what happened to you?”

Kalista’s eyes were flat, but there were sparks of anger in them.

“Yeah, I do. Did you see them? How long was I out?”

“I’m afraid we didn’t see anyone apart from you. We found you in the brush close to the beach — less than an hour ago. It’s still early, not much past dawn.”

Kalista put her feet on the sofa, hugging her knees to her chest.

“Not long then. The sun was beginning to come up when I got away. You can’t have missed them by much.”

“‘Them’. So there was more than one?”

Kalista nodded.

“Yeah. Two guys.”

Delilah took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a moment. When she opened them, she saw Kalista looking at her with narrowed eyes. The young woman spoke slowly.

“Not what you were expecting to hear?”

“ ... not exactly. Can you tell me what happened from the start?”

Kalista gave Delilah a slightly suspicious look, but softened when she glanced at Kendra. The blonde woman was looking too shocked and worried to be hiding anything. Kalista nodded, and scratched at her head — wincing when she encountered the lump on her scalp.

“Well, after you all left I sat down on the beach for a while. Thinking, you know? But I guess I lost track of time, because everyone left and I was the only one down there. I was going to head back, but I heard a noise. Something big, over the other side of the headland.”

Kendra burst out.

“I’m so sorry! We never should have left you by yourself! Just because we wanted to —”

Kalista frowned, but looked away from Kendra. She muttered.

“It’s fine. I stayed too long — that’s on me. Anyway, I went to look for what was making the noise. Just looked over the top of the rocks, you know? But there were two guys on the beach — the noise I heard was them dragging a dinghy up onto the sand. They came from that boat.”

Delilah’s hands clenched, but she kept her voice even.
