“Oh, god. I can’t believe I actually told you that. I — I need to go —”

Kalista felt mortified. She couldn’t believe she had actually confessed to everything. Actually said out loud, hey, I’m fucking my Mom and stepdad. But it had felt so natural, so easy, to tell them. They were all being so nice, so understanding. And they kept giving her drinks.

Kalista couldn’t help but sniff as Kendra put a hand on her shoulder, stepping in close. The blonde’s face was concerned, her voice soft and caring.

“Oh, no — don’t. Honey, it’s fine. Don’t be — look, I don’t care. I don’t judge.”

Kalista immediately felt better as the pretty blonde’s words enveloped her. But it still sounded too good to be true. Kalista could feel that her eyes were full of unshed tears.

“How can you say that?”

Kendra smiled at her ruefully.

“Oh, you’d be surprised. Look, come here...”

Kalista momentarily wondered at Kendra’s words. Wondered if there was something more going on — perhaps related to what she had seen between Adam and Holly. But then Kendra was hugging her. Kalista tensed for a moment ... and then she just let go. A shuddering breath escaped her as she slipped her arms around Kendra’s waist. She initially only intended to hug her briefly, but once she’d started she couldn’t let go. She felt Kendra stroking the back of her hair — something she normally hated — but now it just felt nice. Comforting. Kalista buried her head in Kendra’s chest, not even caring that the blonde’s breasts were pressing against her face.

Behind them, Kalista could hear Holly and Delilah quietly stepping away, leaving them alone. Feeling slightly self-conscious, Kalista tried to step away from Kendra’s embrace. Not because it wasn’t pleasant, or that it wasn’t making her feel better. No. It was just that Kalista was beginning to get the urge to turn her head slightly, maybe press her lips to the upper swell of Kendra’s cleavage ... Kalista had been having her face shoved against breasts quite a lot over the past week or so. Breasts and ... other places. She felt like she’d been conditioned to act a certain way. Like, presented with some tits? Better kiss and suck them! That sort of thing. It didn’t help that Kendra smelt rather nice as well.

“Uh, you can let go of me now, Kendra. I’m ... good.”

Kendra just kept hold of her, humming absently as she stroked the back of Kalista’s head. The blonde’s other hand was at the small of her back. Kalista could hear the smile in Kendra’s voice as she spoke.

“Oh, there’s no rush, Honey. This is nice, isn’t it? Are you feeling better?”

Kalista twisted slightly, craning her head upwards. Her chin was now resting on Kendra’s sternum as she looked up at the blonde. Kalista could feel her cheeks flushing a little as Kendra smiled genially down at her.

Dammit, why does everyone have to be so much taller than I am?

Kalista managed a somewhat shaky smile.

“Yeah. Uh, I am, Kendra. Thanks.”

Kalista felt herself blush harder when Kendra leant down to plant a kiss on her forehead. The blonde’s eyes were sparkling — even though there was still a shadow of concern in her gaze. Kendra let go of Kalista, but still stood close — her hands on the younger woman’s shoulders.

“Good. That’s good. Can I get you anything? Maybe another drink?”

Kalista sighed, rubbing at one arm.

“ ... why not?”

Kendra flashed her a lightning fast smile.

“Excellent! Especially because I don’t feel like drinking alone.”

Kalista followed Kendra over to the table laden with pre-made drinks and filled up a glass. The two of them then wandered aimlessly across the sand, ending up between the bonfire and the rocky headland. They sat down, looking out to sea. Kalista sipping at her drink while Kendra attacked hers more enthusiastically.

After a moment, Kalista gestured back over her shoulder to where Holly and Delilah stood, talking quietly.

“What are they doing?”

“Oh, talking about grave and important things no doubt. You know, they’re overthinking, overanalysing ... Probably deciding whether or not they have to intervene and help you out. That, or flirting. But probably the former.”

Kalista’s sudden surge of panic at Kendra’s words made her dismiss the crack about Holly flirting with the absurdly attractive owner of Serenity Falls. She half lurched to her feet, looking around wildly.

“No! They don’t have to do anything! Oh, god, if they say anything to —”

Kendra reached up and grabbed hold of Kalista’s hand, stopping the younger woman from tearing off. She gently eased her back down onto the sand, her voice soothing and apologetic.

“Oh, Honey, I’m sorry. I don’t mean to freak you out. Don’t worry, I won’t let them do anything you don’t want them to.”

Kalista’s chest was heaving as she gulped in air. The thought of Holly and Delilah — of anyone — going up to her Mother and trying to talk about what was going on ... It made her feel sick. She tried to calm down as she faced Kendra.

“ ... really?”

Kalista wanted to believe it, but it was hard to envision the bubbly blonde overruling or stopping either Holly or Delilah. Holly gave off such a strong responsible and protective vibe. Kalista could see the brunette doing what she thought was right no matter what anyone said to the contrary. As for Delilah ... the older woman was more than a little intimidating, no matter how kind she had been tonight. Kalista couldn’t imagine stopping her doing what she wanted.

Despite Kalista’s thoughts, Kendra just scoffed — waving her hand dismissively.

“Yep, I’d stop them right in their tracks! Don’t you worry about that. But I won’t have to do anything. I’m sure they’ll come to the same conclusion that I have.”

“Which is?”

Kendra gave Kalista a gentler smile, settling down. She reached out and poked her gently in the ribs, making the younger woman jump. Then Kendra grinned.

“Which is that you don’t need rescuing! I could see you getting better the longer that you talked to us. You don’t need help, you just needed to vent.”

Kalista just stared at Kendra as she absently rubbed at her side. The poke in her ribs hadn’t hurt exactly, but it had tickled.

“I’m not sure it’s that simple, Kendra.”

“Sure it is, Honey.”

Kalista just gave Kendra a skeptical look. She liked that the blonde woman had confidence in her — liked even better that she wasn’t going to say anything or make a scene — but Kalista doubted her read on things. Everything was so twisted, so convoluted ... She didn’t even know what she was going to say to her mother. Kalista had stormed off from her mom and step-dad after they had been interrupted by that strange light from off-shore. Her mother had looked shocked as she left — even slightly worried. Like it hadn’t even occurred to her that her daughter wasn’t 100% on board with what they were doing.

What made it harder was that part of Kalista — a large part — really did enjoy everything that had been going on between her and her parents. It was exciting — and the sex was amazing. It was just ... she had begun to feel so dirty afterwards. With that level of baggage, the fact that Kendra could so blithely say that everything was fine now ... it just didn’t make sense.

As if sensing Kalista’s thoughts, Kendra elaborated.

“No, Honey, listen. Please. You looked so beaten down when Holly and Adam brought you over to our fire. Like I was seriously freaked out! And if you were still like that now, well ... I would be leading the charge to go and ‘rescue’ you, no matter what Holly or Delilah decided. Because when I first saw you tonight, everything about you screamed distress and pain.”

“ ... oh.”

Kalista bit at her lip, feeling some small measure of what Kendra was describing. She hadn’t realised she’d looked that bad. Had it been that obvious to everyone else around her? And if it was, why hadn’t her mother noticed?

Probably because half the time she was sitting on my face. Although ... that’s not completely fair.

Kendra stopped Kalista’s dark thought, reaching out and cupping her chin with one hand. She tilted the younger woman’s face towards hers, smiling reassuringly at her.

“But you don’t look that way now. Not to me. You’ve been bottling everything up for too long, haven’t you? I know what that’s like. See, I’m not young anymore like you, I’m all kinds of ancient — shut up, don’t laugh! Fine, older than you at least. But I still remember — faintly — what it’s like, doing what you’ve been doing.”

Kalista gave Kendra a ghost of a smile.

“What, you had sex with your parents when you were my age as well?”

Kendra blinked at her, and then burst out with a chortling laugh. She hunched over, wiping at her eyes.

“Oh, god — no! I mean, if you knew anything at all about my childhood and my family, you would — ah, never mind. What I meant was that you’ve been bottling everything up. Not talking about it with anyone, just pushing all your feelings down. Letting it fester, letting it get bigger and bigger until you felt like it was impossible for you to deal with. Like there was no longer any way out for you...”

Kalista shivered. It was like Kendra was reading her mind — or at least describing the last week or so of her life perfectly.

Kendra put a comforting hand on Kalista’s knee, squeezing gently. She then continued.

“But like I said, you’re not like that anymore. If you think about it — really examine how you’re feeling — you’ll realise that I’m right. I mean, do you still feel the same way that you did earlier this evening? Like you’re trapped with no way forwards?”

Kalista hesitated, and then cocked her head to one side. Thinking over what Kendra had said. Now that she had pointed it out, Kalista realised that she was right. It wasn’t just that she had confided with someone. She didn’t feel that vague sense of panic that she’d felt in the back of her mind for ages. It was gone.

“ ... huh. Actually, you’re right. I feel ... better. A lot better.”

Kendra nodded, looking almost proud of her.

“See? I knew the girl that I saw facing down an old lecher without even flinching would be able to handle anything life threw at her. Your only problem is that you needed to get your head on straight. There’s no shame in it. If you ever get in a situation again when you start to feel lost, you’ll know you can move past it. That’s all that matters.”

Kalista smiled at Kendra, but then it faltered.

“Thanks, Kendra, but ... I’m still in a pretty fucked up situation. Aren’t I.”

Kendra just shrugged, but there was nothing dismissive about it.

“As to that, that’s up to you, Honey. I mean, you aren’t a child. And whatever is going on — or, whatever things have, uh, turned into — I’m sure that your Mom still loves you. Right?”

“Yeah. She does.”

Kalista nodded firmly, answering straight away. The immediacy of her own response made Kalista feel a swell of relief. Yes, her Mom did love her. She’d never doubted that. It had just been ... sidelined.

Kendra squeezed Kalista’s knee again, looking pleased.

“Now, I’m not saying that your Mom didn’t fuck up. Because I think she did. From what you’ve said, she hasn’t treated you, um, all that great? But she got carried away. And so did you, if not as much as her. But then I guess that’s the danger of this place, isn’t it?”

Kalista started nodding thoughtfully as Kendra spoke, but then she frowned — catching the incongruous part of what the other woman had said.

“I’m sorry, what was that, Kendra?”

“Hmm?”

Kalista gave her a puzzled look.

“You said ‘the danger of this place’. What did you mean by that?”

For the first time, Kalista saw Kendra hesitate, looking almost panicked. The blonde woman gave her a too-wide smile.

“Oh, I just meant the retreat. The setting, the isolation ... Holly and I both went kind of nuts when we first got here. I mean, I didn’t want to say anything given your story, but when you were telling us how it all began with you and your step-dad in the pool ... Well, Holly and I both got caught there ourselves ... We got carried away by this place. That’s, um, all I meant.”

Kalista frowned as she listened to Kendra almost babbling. There was something there, but she had nothing to go on. Instead, Kalista decided to focus on what she did know.

“By carried away, do you mean with ... Adam?”

“What’s that, Honey? Adam? What about him?”

Kendra looked ... not exactly uncomfortable. And certainly not embarrassed. But she was acting shifty, like she was unsure of exactly how much she should say. That was Kalista’s read on her anyway.

After hesitating for a few seconds, Kalista decided to just come out with it. She hoped she was right, and that this wasn’t a case of Holly cheating on Kendra with Adam.

“Well, I was just curious if you were referring to something like how I saw Holly and Adam together. Earlier tonight, out in the dunes? Um, getting really close?”

Kendra flushed, and she darted a look over her shoulder towards her fiancee. There was no help there, as Holly and Delilah were standing very close together, talking quietly.

“Oh, did you see them while you were out there with your mother and step-dad?”

It was Kalista’s turn to flush.

“Ah ... yeah.”

Kendra immediately leant in close, waving her hand in apology. She looked ashamed of herself.

“Oh, Honey, I’m sorry. That was mean. I didn’t —”

Kalista shook her head, not wishing to go over it all again. She spoke over the top of Kendra, changing the subject.

“Uh, why do you keep calling me that? ‘Honey’, I mean. I was wondering.”

Kendra blinked, relaxing as the tension eased.

“Oh, I give everyone nicknames. Or most people. Like, I don’t think Delilah would appreciate one, but I’m still workshopping one for her.”

Kalista nodded patiently. That wasn’t what she meant.

“Yeah, I noticed that. But why ‘Honey’?”

Kendra shrugged, giving Kalista a crooked smile.

“It’s half affectionate, half to do with your colouring. I mean, you have that awesome mane of tawny hair. It’s so thick! And your olive skin tone just looks incredible. Like, really it does. Oh, I’m not being insensitive am I?”

It was Kalista’s turn to shrug. She gave Kendra a small smile in return.

“No, it’s fine. It’s fairly innocent, and at least you didn’t decide to reference my height. I’ve been getting ‘doll’ or some variation of it all my life.”

Kendra nodded sagely.

“Yeah, I get why that would be annoying. I mean, I used to get called ‘sugar-tits’ in high school all the time because I once wore a t-shirt and sweater with no bra back when I was naive enough not to know any better. But that was only because there were a lot of jerks in my year who’d never known the touch of a woman. Couldn’t understand why I didn’t appreciate all the ‘attention’.”

Kalista couldn’t help it. Kendra looked so serious, that she let out what was almost a giggle. Kendra grinned at the younger woman’s mirth.

“See, there it is. My patented ability to make anyone laugh! I’m tremendously funny, you know.”

Kalista sighed happily, relaxing all at once. She flopped to one side, leaning her head upon Kendra’s shoulder. Kendra froze in surprise for a moment, but then she just breathed out a soft laugh, and slid her arm around Kalista’s waist. The two of them sat in silence for a few moments, listening to the gently lapping of the waves, and the crackling flicker of the flames on the fire. After a while, Kalista tried to bring up what she was wondering again.

“So ... you’re sleeping with Adam as well? Sorry, but you didn’t exactly seem surprised when I mentioned Holly and him. And it also might explain why you took my ... situation, so easily in stride.”
