There was a fair bit of consternation and chattering among the committee members when Jonathan introduced his wife. Williwaw interrupted it all when she asked, “Are you saying the head of the Caradoc office of the Immigration Assistance Office is married to an immigrant?”

“For twenty years,” answered Jonathan. Korona gave a nervous wave to the committee.

“Well, I should have expected this, I suppose. Welcome to the hearing, Mrs. Sawbuck.”

Korona said, “Uh, thank you.”

“Well, if you’re a witness, let’s swear you in.” Afterwards, Williwaw gave a wry smile. “So, let me ask you. What is your story? Are you an immigrant or a citizen?”

“Both, actually.” Williwaw eyed her curiously. “I came here when I was seventeen, from Goldheart, to go to Devonaire University. I wanted to study Pre-Teen Education. That’s what I do now, I’m a teacher at Holman Avenue Pre-Teen in Caradoc. It was while I was at Devonaire that I met Jonathan,” Korona said.

“Why did you come to Lupina to go to school? I’m sure there must be teacher’s colleges in Goldheart,” asked O’Malley.

“Yes, sir, but I needed to move away from home.” There were several curious looks at that, but when she glanced at her husband, he simply smiled and motioned for her to continue. Jonathan knew her history, but she needed to tell it. “My parents were in the middle of getting a very nasty divorce, and I didn’t need all the drama. Some friends of mine said Lupina had good schools, and that Devonaire was good for liberal arts. Besides, I just wanted to see what Lupina was like; I’d never been away from the Goldheart system.”

“And you went through the immigration process and were interviewed by somebody in IA. Was that Mister Sawbuck here?” asked Chairman Williwaw.

Korona’s eyes popped open at that. “No, I mean, yes.” She caught her breath. “Yes, I went through the immigration process and was interviewed, but that was long before Jon was in IA! He had just started at Devonaire himself. We were both seventeen!”

The committee’s eyes turned towards Jonathan, who simply smiled. Williwaw looked at him and simply said, “Mister Sawbuck?”

“My background is very simple. I grew up in Devon Province.” Devon was a predominately rural province a couple of hours by speed-pod west of Lupina. “I was a farm boy. My family emigrated to Lupina about two-hundred years ago and became farmers in Devon. We bought into a farm cooperative, Devon Farms, and we grow wheat, barley, and other grains. Hops, too, so we make a very nice beer. Anyway, it was either grow up and be a farmer or go to school for something else.”

“And you chose to go to school to be an Immigration Assistance Officer?”

Jonathan grinned. “Not precisely. I went to Devonaire for a degree in Galactic History. I wanted to do something in public service. It was only after I met Korona that I began to consider IA.” He shrugged. “Who knows? Maybe I’d have gone into municipal planning or transit design or something. I ended up in immigration, instead.” He reached over and squeezed his wife’s hand.

Williwaw sighed and looked at Korona. “So what made you want to become a citizen and not return to Goldheart?”

Korona cocked her head to the side and thought for a second. “I think it was right after I moved into the dormitory at Devonaire. I was looking out a window and I realized the window was open, and that people were walking on the lawn outside. It was then that it hit me. I was on a planet! I mean, back in Goldheart, I could go to an orbital habitat or biodome and feel grass and a breeze, but it wasn’t the same.”

“Oh?”

“Then, later that day, there was a new student welcome mixer, and I met this guy. He was just so gorgeous and, I mean ... twenty centimeters! We danced and then he took my hand and led me up this small grassy knoll that looked out over the school, and we laid down on the grass and got undressed and made love over and over, for hours! The thing is, even as we made love, I was thinking, there was a warm breeze blowing over us, and grass underneath us, and moons going over us, and it wasn’t a simulation or technology. It was real! I was on a planet! I could never go back!”

Jonathan reached over and squeezed his wife’s hand, and she looked back at him. “I’m not talking about you!”

There was a lot of laughter at that, especially from the female Legislators. Williwaw rolled her eyes and asked, “So you decided to immigrate when you graduated? When did Mister Sawbuck become the one and only?”

Korona smiled. “Probably that first night, but we didn’t make it official until a couple of years after we graduated. We got married when we were twenty-six.” Then she got serious. “After graduation I filled out the IA forms and did the interview and got a job teaching Pre-Teen here in Lupina City. Jon was training here with Immigration Assistance. We’ve been married twenty years and have two boys and a girl.”

Jonathan spoke up. “So the question is, for all those who think Korona isn’t really a citizen, do we send her back to Goldheart? She’s been voting here since she registered as a citizen. What about our children? Do they get half a vote each when they turn eighteen? Or maybe our twin sons switch off every vote? I’d like to see a show of hands. I can’t believe I am the only person in this room with an immigrant as a relative. How many of you are married to somebody who came here from another planet? Or maybe have a child who married an immigrant? Or a grandchild?”

Williwaw looked at Jonathan, ignoring the chatter around her. “So you say the system is working fine?”

“I’m saying any system can be improved. That doesn’t mean we throw the system out. That means we improve it,” replied Jonathan.

“Thank you, Mister Sawbuck. I think we can finish this hearing. We’ll let you all know our findings.”

“Thank you.” All the witnesses thanked the Chairman, even those who hadn’t needed to answer any questions. She gaveled the hearing to a close.

The other three witnesses gathered around the Sawbucks. “Well, that was easy enough,” commented Carianne Smith, the Caradoc Municipal Prosecutor. She, Harkness, the CMP Captain, and Holliwell, the Deputy Mayor, hadn’t said more than a few words. It was as predicted, the hearing into the Bossaman Incident had really been a hearing about immigration, and that just wasn’t their bailiwick. “It was nice to meet you, Mrs. Sawbuck.”

“Please, call me Korona. I wasn’t sure how this would go. I’m just a schoolteacher. I don’t get involved in politics at all.”

“I hate to say it, but at our level, it’s all politics. You did well. It’s early. Are you heading back this afternoon?” asked Holliwell.

Jonathan smiled and answered, “Not hardly. The kids are old enough to take care of themselves, and we are taking a long weekend away from them.”

“I’m staying the night but heading home in the morning. The office can handle things without me for another day,” said Harkness.

“Same here,” agreed Smith. What wasn’t known to the others was that the CMP captain and the prosecutor were sharing a room. It wasn’t like they were hiding it from their spouses, either. Following the Bossaman Incident, they had all gone out to dinner and then spent a fun evening partying with each other. “You?” she asked the deputy mayor.

He shook his head, too. He was with his wife, and they wanted to sample the fleshpots of Lupina City. “We’ll head back tomorrow. Mayor Guernsey should be safe on his own until then.”

Just then a young man wearing a conservative dark wrap approached the group. “Mister Sawbuck, do you have a moment? Could you come with me, please?”

“And you are?”

The young man smiled. “The Director would like a word.” Then he turned to Korona and smiled. “You, too, Mrs. Sawbuck. Please.” He motioned towards a side entrance and then nodded to the others in the group.

He led the Sawbucks out the side door and down a hall to an exit. An autolimo was waiting for them. A few minutes later the autolimo drove into the basement of the Immigration Assistance Office, the planetary headquarters. They were led to the lift beams and rode the grav wave up to the top floor. The young man stayed with them all the time and led them to a small side room. He ushered them inside and then closed the door, leaving them with Vladimir Hawksburg. He was standing next to a small conference table and smiling. “Thank you for coming, Jonathan.” Then he turned to Korona. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Sawbuck.”

“Korona.”

“Korona. Why don’t we all sit down?” Hawksburg waited until Korona sat before sitting at the head of the table. Jonathan sat down next to him, with Korona at his side. Hawksburg looked at Jonathan. “How do you think the hearing went?”

Jonathan didn’t answer directly. “I assume you were watching on C-SPAN?” C-SPAN was the Conclave Special Public Access Network, which broadcast all Conclave public hearings. There were similar channels for provincial and city meetings.

The director tapped his macrolink and smiled. “I didn’t want to be anywhere near the Conclave. I watched it from this conference room so I wouldn’t be distracted. I especially liked how you managed to get Rossembroski fighting Williwaw. The bit about inbreeding and two-tier systems was fantastic.”

Jonathan gave a small shrug and slyly smiled. “It seemed the simplest way to undermine his attack on the IAO. I would think that this might be a good moment to utilize other assets here in the capital to shore up Immigration Assistance and maybe get some additional resources to help us in our constitutional duty.”

Hawksburg returned the sly smile. “I also liked how you didn’t give your entire educational transcript. You failed to mention graduating magna cum laude with two degrees in galactic history or the minors with honors in political science and public law.”

“No need to muddy the waters. Better to just seem a faceless bureaucrat.”

“Quite.” Then he thought for a second and said, “Jonathan, have you considered your future in Immigration Assistance? Where do you see yourself in the next five years?”

Jonathan responded, “Not sure about five years, but I see myself in Caradoc for the next three. Our boys will be graduating in a few months and going off to college, but our daughter just turned fifteen. Have you ever had a teenaged daughter? It would be best to stay where we are until she goes off to college, too.”

His boss laughed. “I’ve had three! No, I wouldn’t ask you to make that change. However, I do think that your time in Caradoc will be coming to an end. I could see you moving into a more senior position, or possibly a policy role. Hmmm?”

“Caradoc is a lovely place, but we lived in Lupina City back when we got out of Devonaire. I seem to recall that there were some very nice suburbs on the northern side of the city,” replied Jonathan.

“Very nice, indeed. I know that several of my senior staff have homes in that area.” Hawksburg turned to Korona. “Mrs. Sawbuck, Korona, thank you for coming this morning. I have to say that your attendance and testimony was a definite help.”

Jonathan nodded, even as his wife said, “I wasn’t sure what Jon had in mind when he asked me to come. I thought he just wanted to get away from the kids for a long weekend.”

Hawksburg nodded. “Speaking of which, can I assume that you brought a nice outfit to go out to dinner in tonight?” Korona’s eyes widened. “Of course you did. My wife does the same thing when we get a chance to get away. If you haven’t made reservations already, allow me to make a recommendation.” He tapped his macrolink and a message appeared on their holo screens. “You have reservations this evening, and the charges are already taken care of.” He looked back at Jonathan. “Something to think about - the higher you go in that faceless bureaucracy, the nicer the expense account you get.”

“Something to think about,” Jonathan agreed.

“What’s this place like?” asked Korona.

Hawksburg simply smiled. “Good food, good drink, and the personal service? Something you will remember!”

“You look absolutely gorgeous!” said Jonathan.

Korona blushed and said, “Thank you. I was hoping to do this in red, but I couldn’t quite afford the red diamonds yet.”

“Ah.” Jonathan still liked what his wife was wearing.

It was the sheer black mini-wrap and black stiletto pumps she had worn on their big date on the Riverwalk. Fortunately, she had learned a lot during the preparation for that date. Before they had taken the trip to Lupina City, Korona had touched up her tan and haircut. Then before they went out, she had put on her gold jewelry, including all her nipple, navel, and clit hood gold and black diamond dangles. She’d even spent some time in the bathroom taking care of her personal hygiene, so that she would be ready for whatever her husband had in mind.

“Well, you still look fantastic! Let me know when you get the red diamonds in. I’ll want to taste test them.”

“What do diamonds taste like?”
