“What do you think the kids were doing while we were away?” asked Korona. They were riding the speed-pod back to Caradoc in the late morning. They had left Lupina at 1100, but between the two-hour travel time and the two time-zone difference, it would be 1500 before they made it back to Caradoc.

“I am sure they spent the time we were away studying. The boys, in particular, are working on their college entrance exams, and you know how studious they can be.”

“And your daughter?”

Jonathan shrugged and smiled. “I have it on good authority she was going to be spending the weekend working with the Red Cross on healthy food planning for the needy.”

“Really? Karina Sawbuck? That daughter?”

“Allow a father to hope.”

Korona rolled her eyes and shook her head. “And your sons were studying? Are you sure about that?”

“My sons were studying. Your sons were probably spending the entire weekend screwing their female classmates.”

Korona snorted and settled back into her seat. After getting back to their hotel Saturday morning, they had immediately gone to bed and slept the day away. They only awoke at 1900, after which they cleaned up, had dinner at the hotel restaurant, and then gone back to bed, where they made love twice. When they woke up Sunday morning, they had enjoyed another round of morning glory before packing and heading to the speed-pod station. It had been a very tiring weekend.

Their answers came when they got home. Paul and Kyle were goofing off in the swimming pool, but the house AI admitted they had been studying for their Teen School finals. As for Karina, they discovered her and Billy Dorloo sleeping on a cushion on the living room floor, and it was obvious what they had been doing.

Korona made enough noise heading to the master bedroom that the teens woke up. Billy looked around nervously, to find his girlfriend’s father in the kitchen, looking at him. Then his girlfriend’s mother came back down the hall, and he nudged Karina awake.

Karina sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. “How was the trip?” she asked.

“I assume that none of you were watching the news,” said her mother.

“Uh, no. Should we have.”

“Your father did very nicely. It was broadcast on C-SPAN.”

Karina rolled her eyes. “Ugh! Boring!”

Jonathan looked at her mother and said, “Why do I have a feeling your daughter is going to peak as a hostess at the Diogenes Club.”

“Behave.”

“What’s the Diogenes Club?” asked Karina.

“Never mind,” said Korona. “Now, we know what you were doing this weekend. What about your brothers?”

Karina shrugged and said, “Same old, same old. They had a couple of girlfriends over Friday night. They stayed until yesterday, but they’ve been studying since then. I mean, studying on a Saturday? Who does that?”

“Not you,” said Jonathan.

Paul and Kyle came in from the pool, drying themselves off. “Hey! How’d your trip go?” asked Kyle.

“Stick around and find out.” Jonathan poured a couple of cups of coffee and then sat down with Korona in front of the holoscreen. He grabbed the remote and pulled up a delayed holovid of one of the more popular Sunday news programs.

“Hey, you’re on the holo!” said Paul.

“Just watch,” said Korona.

They watched a few hours of the Sunday news holovids; several of the segments discussed Jonathan Sawbuck’s response to Demeter Rossembroski’s attack on immigration. It was generally agreed that Mister Sawbuck had demolished Rossembroski, but whether that would influence anybody in Base Station was questionable at best. On the other hand, it had significantly weakened Rossembroski’s position in the Conclave. Then the discussion switched to the recently announced plans by the Director of Immigration, Vladimir Hawksburg, to invest in programming and training upgrades throughout Lupina and the orbital system. That was generally considered a positive investment of government resources.

Korona reached over and took her husband’s hand. “Congratulations.”

“Just remember, one ‘aw shit’ equals a thousand ‘attaboys.’”

She gave him a wry smile and a nod. “Still, it looks positive for that expense account.”

“Ask me again in three years.” Then he smiled. “It was a pretty good use of an expense account, wasn’t it?”

She smiled back. “It was pretty good.”

Sunday was quiet. The kids quickly got bored watching delayed news programs. The twins did some more studying but then napped around the pool. Karina walked Billly home and then stayed there through dinner. Jonathan and Korona had a quiet night, taking a late swim before making love on the grass. They went inside when it started to rain, cleaned up, and went to bed. They both agreed that the weekend had been fun, but they needed to get back to normal.

Monday they went back to work. Korona’s fellow teachers, at least the ones who had seen news clips of her testifying before the Conclave, all thought she had done well. It was no surprise that she was from Goldheart. She had never hidden the fact, not that she could have. She still had the lightly clipped accent common in the Goldheart system. There was a lot of laughter about how she had described her husband and several of the women told her to invite Jonathan to the Friday mixer.

Jonathan had some very interesting conversations based on his appearance and testimony. The Monday staff meeting raised the choices possible if the Director’s budget increase materialized. By late that afternoon, a preliminary budget increase came down from the main office in Lupina City, and he passed it along to his department heads.

Tuesday afternoon, Sergeant Hooper of the CMP showed up with a bottle of Devon whiskey. He set it on Jonathan’s desk and said, “Captain Harkness wanted me to bring this over. It’s a thank you for keeping the CMP out of the line of fire last week.”

Jonathan smiled and motioned the police officer to a seat before pulling a drawer open. Inside were some small shot glasses, and he pulled two out. “Well, you can let Joe know that I was happy to help. He’s not here, so I can’t invite him to join in. Care to stand in for him?”

“I can make the sacrifice. That’s just the kind of fellow I am.”

“I recognized that willingness to help others when we worked together.” He poured a couple of centimeters into the glasses and pushed one over. “What should we toast to? To the valiant officers of the CMP?”

“And our friends in the IAO.”

Both men drained their glasses and Jonathan refilled them. “Any effects from Friday’s fun and games? Has Harkness or the brass at the CMP heard anything out of Lupina City or the Conclave?” Jonathan was smart enough to know that Harkness would not have sent over the CMP sergeant with a bottle of whiskey unless he wanted to send a message.

Hooper shrugged and smiled. “Nothing you haven’t already heard. The CMP, Municipal Prosecutor’s Office, and the Mayor’s office all dodged a missile last week because you took down an asshole. As you already know, government isn’t about doing amazing things. Ninety percent of the time government is about dealing with assholes. God knows being a cop is all about that!”

Jonathan laughed. “You mean it’s not like on the holovids? I’m devastated!”

Hooper laughed as well. “You want to cut the CMP? Get rid of the assholes and we’d all be out of work.”

“Well, you can assure the powers-that-be down at headquarters that if I hear anything out of Immigration Assistance in Lupina City, I will pass it along. As it stands, I can say that the reports that IA is getting a budget boost are correct. What that means to Caradoc isn’t clear, but it’s happening.”

“I don’t know, either.” Hooper finished his drink and stood up. “Anyway, I’ll let you get back to work. If we keep sipping whiskey they’re going to have to wheel us out to the autocabs.”

Jonathan stood and shook Hooper’s hand. “Take care, Sergeant. Let us know if there’s something IA can do for the CMP.”

The sergeant left and Jonathan capped the bottle and put it in a cabinet. He’d keep it for the next time he had to schmooze somebody.

Thursday, the Municipal Prosecutors expressed their thanks by inviting Jonathan to their Friday afternoon mixer. He took an autocab to their headquarters in the Public Safety building, where Carianne Smith and Talia Jones, the two prosecutors involved in the Bossaman case greeted him and joined him in a very pleasant threesome. He told Korona about it that night and then proceeded to do some of the things to her that they had done to him that afternoon.

More interesting was the invitation the Sawbucks received to a cocktail party at Deputy Mayor Josephus Holliwell’s home the following Saturday. Jonathan and Korona didn’t normally party with the politicians who ran Caradoc. “Were you interested in going?” Korona asked her husband.

“I’m certainly curious. What does the deputy mayor want out of us, or more specifically, me? I’m not sure,” he responded.

“So, we’re going.”

Jonathan smiled. “Why not? Let’s see how the other half lives.”

That Saturday, Jonathan grilled hamburgers in the back yard for their sons and their girlfriends; Karina was at Billy’s for the weekend. The cocktail party would officially begin at 2000 and run until ... whenever. Assuming the cocktail party was a standard Lupina and Caradoc party, there would be a fair bit of alcohol consumed, and it would turn into an orgy extending well past midnight. After dinner, Jonathan changed into a dark gray wrap and matching shoes. Korona, however, wore a sheer red mini-wrap, her new gold and red diamond jewelry, and matching red stiletto pumps. She wasn’t sure what political things her husband was up to, but she was planning to party!

Jonathan and Korona used an autocab to go to the party, leaving their autovan in case the boys needed it. They programmed in the address and half an hour later they were in a very nice section of Caradoc. From the front, the house looked only a bit larger than theirs, but as they approached the front door, Jonathan could see it was much bigger. Holliwell greeted them at the door wearing a bright blue wrap and khaki-colored slip-ons. “You made it! Welcome!”

“Thank you, Mister Holliwell,” said Jonathan.

“Call me Joe, please.” He shook Jonathan’s hand and then turned to Korona. “I thought you were beautiful in Lupina City, but that wasn’t doing you justice. You look spectacular.”

Korona blushed and said, “Thank you.”

“Well, come in. Let me show you around.” Holliwell led them inside and showed them around. Unlike their home, the deputy mayor’s home had four bedrooms, and he had a large and separate study. The kitchen and dining room were much larger, and it was obvious they were designed for large dinner parties. Then he led them out the back door, where there was a large swimming pool and a very large yard. At the moment, several tables were set with condiments and snacks, and a grill was cooking skewers of meat. Holliwell waved and a beautiful brunette waved back.

“Joe, more guests? Welcome! I’m Amanda.” Amanda Holliwell was slim and young, almost half her husband’s age. She was also naked and barefoot. “Let me get you a drink.”

“Amanda, these are the Sawbucks, Jonathan and Korona.”

“From the hearing in Lupina City, right? Joe told me about that! Korona, I love the outfit! Are those red diamonds! Fantastic! What can I get you?”

“Amanda, I need a few minutes with Jonathan but take Korona and introduce her. Show her where the bar is, if nothing else.” He laughed and Amanda tugged Korona outside. Then he turned back to Jonathan and said, “Let’s have a drink in my study.”

“My pleasure.” Jonathan thought that this little meeting was the entire purpose of the cocktail party. He wondered what the deputy mayor was interested in.

Joe led him into the study and closed the door behind them. He went to a cabinet and pulled out a bottle of whiskey and a couple of small glasses. “Devonic Rye, twelve years old. I’ve heard you liked whiskey.”

“I do.” Where had he heard that from? The CMP Sergeant? Holliwell poured some of the rye into a glass and handed it to Jonathan. He sampled it and smiled. “The good stuff.”

Holliwell sipped his own and agreed. “The good stuff. Have a seat, Jon.” He had another sip and said, “I would bet you’re curious about why I asked to talk to you.”

“It had occurred to me.”

“There are some changes coming to Caradoc and I wanted to discuss them with you. Were you aware that Caradoc is getting a major upgrade to our shuttle port? It’s been discussed for several years, but there were some interests in Lupina City and Base Station which wanted to keep as much of the shuttle traffic there. However, once you destroyed Rossembroski’s influence, Caradoc’s interests have moved forward. It will be announced early next year.”

“Very interesting. If you are telling me this, you must be sure about this.”

“Very! The money is already budgeted. The increase in Immigration Assistance’s budget your Director Hawksburg has publicly mentioned is part of this. By increasing the capacity of the shuttle port there will be an increase in the number of immigrants going through Caradoc. That will directly affect you, won’t it?”

“Again, very interesting.” Jonathan thought this sounded possible, but it still didn’t explain why Holliwell was interested in him.

“More than interesting. I intend to be the next Mayor of Caradoc.”

“The election is later this year. I hadn’t heard that Guernsey was stepping down.”

“He’s not. A few months from now, Mayor Guernsey will be offered a position on an advisory board in Lupina City. It will be the perfect job for Gary. It won’t involve any actual work and pays more.”

Jonathan smiled at that. Gary Guernsey was an amiable fool, but boy did he look good on holovid. “Does the mayor know this yet?”

“No reason to muddy the waters. He doesn’t know it yet, but when the announcement is made, he’ll be endorsing me for his job,” said Holliwell.

“Which he also doesn’t know yet.” Holliwell smiled and shrugged. “Of course not. Still, how does this involve me.”

“I’m just getting my ducks in a row, though as I say that I have no idea what it means. Ducks are some sort of Old Earth bird, but we don’t have them here. In any case, my understanding is that you will be running Immigration here for a few more years before heading to Lupina City. I heard that from Hawksburg. If, over the next few years Immigration Assistance could work closely with the Mayor of Caradoc, and other leaders in the province, it would be a major benefit to everyone involved.”

Jonathan began to see what Holliwell had in mind. “I imagine it would.”

Holliwell refilled their glasses. “You’re what, forty-six, forty-seven? That’s young for a provincial director for IA. Very young for a province with a large shuttle port. From what Hawksburg was telling me, if you manage this expansion well, you’ll be extremely young for a position in Lupina City.”
