“Keep your voice down!” A voice said from the other side of the wall. “Hey, shut the fuck up!” Another said angrily.
“I can’t believe this!” Ashley threw her bag onto her own bed, lightheaded from shock.
“It’s not ... I didn’t know you’d be back ... I didn’t mean...” Trish stumbled over her words, a bedsheet pulled up to her neck.
“Hey Ash, I can explain...” said Justin, his hands raised like she was holding a gun on him. A telltale bulge on his body told her everything she needed to know.
“Get out ... just get the fuck out!” Ashley said angrily, pointing to the door.
Not wanting to be in the middle of the fight, Justin reached across Trisha to fish for his boxers on the floor. Finding them, he struggled to get dressed underneath the sheet; then pulled off a used condom and tossed it in the garbage as he did. The room was dead silent, no one said a word but the rustling of sheets. Boxers on and his erection deflating, he climbed out of the bed and collected the rest of his clothes before making a hasty retreat.
“I’ll ... uh, talk to you later ... I guess.” He said as he felt the withering death glare from Ashley on his way out the door.
Trisha was in tears before the door shut, as Ashley stood silently stewing in a mix of rage and hurt. She’d never experienced something like this before, a betrayal from someone she cared so much about, lying to her. If she wasn’t so angry, she’d likely have started crying herself.
“I’m so sorry...” Trish sobbed, heavy tears streamed down her face and dripped onto her sheets.
Clenching her fists, Ashley asked coldly, “How long?”
Trisha started speaking, “I didn’t mean-” but Ashley cut her off.
“How. Long?” Ashley demanded again.
Wiping her eyes with the sheets and nearly hyperventilating, Trisha replied, “Ha-Halloween. When you left-”
“You what? Were waiting for me to go so he could jump you, assault you again?” Ashley’s vitriol and hurt clouded her better judgement. She didn’t think before she spoke.
“No, it just hap-”
“It doesn’t just happen!” Ashley jumped in again. “You don’t just open a door and-”
“-I thought you were getting fucked by two guys!” Trisha fired back, it caught Ashley off-guard. The words hit like a ton of bricks, stopping her mid-sentence.
“But I didn’t,” Ashley said, now on the defensive.
“But I didn’t know that at the time.” Trisha was on the attack, finally able to say what she’d been holding back for over a month. “I thought ... I was upset and alone; Justin stopped by to see what I was doing and ... it just sort of happened.”
Ashley sat down on her desk chair; her own tears began to drip down her chin. It had been over a month that she’d been lied to. The missing pieces of the puzzle all fell into place; Trisha’s hot and cold affections, Justin skulking about, and Trisha making her treat him nicely.
“The whole month? You’ve been sleeping with him the whole month?” Ashley said, less to hear the response and more just to say the words screaming in her own head.
“I just...” Trish stood up, naked and vulnerable, and walked toward Ashley, “ ... I’m not as strong as you. I like Justin and he likes me; I didn’t want to be-”
“-the lesbian roommate,” Ashley finished the sentence for her.
Ashley sniffled and used her hand to wipe the steady flow of tears from her eyes. She didn’t know what to do or where she could go at that moment, all she knew was she needed to get out of there to think.
“Ash, talk to me,” Trisha said, placing her hand on Ashley’s shoulder. “I’m really sorry, I never meant for you to find out this way.”
Ashley let out a sad laugh, “Seems like I was never meant to find out at all. I’ve got to go...”
Standing up, Ashley grabbed her tossed bag and headed for the door. Trisha tried to head her off and block the way, but Ashley got her hand on the knob first.
“Please don’t go. Please, we can talk about this,” Trisha pleaded, her tears raining down her face.
“I need to think. I-uh ... tell your mom I can’t make it to Christmas.”
Turning the handle, Ashley exited the room and slammed the door behind her. A small smattering of students peered through doorways and gathered in hallways to discover the source of the ruckus. She didn’t care about their stares or hushed whispers.
Ashley hadn’t made it more than five feet from the door before she was confronted by her floor’s warden, Jess. The upper year student was wearing flipflops and a housecoat, her glasses pushed far up the bridge of her nose.
“Is there a problem here, Ashley?” Jess asked. “I’ve gotten a few noise complaints about your room.”
“Yeah, I’ll bet.” Ashley replied while trying to wipe her constant tears. “Just leave me alone.”
“What’s going on? You know I’ll have to fine you if I find out-”
“-THEN FUCKING FINE ME!” Ashley lashed out. She didn’t wait for a response, instead, she sprinted down the hall to the stairs and was gone out of the building. There was only one place she knew she could go.
Her phone buzzed again, Ashley didn’t even look at it. She thought it would have stopped a week ago, it was Christmas Eve after all, didn’t she have family to talk to; didn’t she have Justin to talk to?
“Are you ever going to talk to her?” asked Rick, sitting at the table at the studio, wearing a Santa hat.
“Seriously Ash, you can’t ignore her forever. You’ll have to deal with this before the new term,” Scott added, a worried look on his face despite his tacky reindeer antler hat with little bells.
Ashley had shown up to the studio in tears a few weeks earlier, and asked for someplace to stay. The guys didn’t hesitate for a moment and took her in without question. It took a few days and several drinks to pry out what had happened, with Ashley both devastated by the incident and embarrassed by how she acted. This wasn’t like her, but nothing seemed to make it better.
“I just need space to clear my head,” Ashley finally said as the call ended unanswered, her voice-mail full.
“We understand and you know we love having you here...” Rick gave her a warm smile.
Scott continued on, “ ... but you can’t hide here forever.”
Ashley grew pale, “Are ... are you kicking me out?”
“Did we say that?” Scott took her hand. “We love you, you know that, and you’re always welcome here but you have to face this. It’s part of being an adult. Plus, the commute would cost you a fortune.”
For her last few classes and exams, Ashley had taken a cab to and from the studio to school and back. It was pricey and long, something that would be challenging on a daily basis. On one trip, Ashley quickly returned to her room when she knew Trisha would be in class, and packed all the important things she’d need to study, some clothes, and a few other supplies. Most things she could just buy more of, like toiletries and other small necessities, the rest she could do without.
“Have you called Nikki yet, at least?” Scott added, hoping her friend could give better advice than two middle-aged men.
Ashley shook her head, “Not yet, I didn’t want to bother her during her exams, you know how she worries; and she’s spending Christmas out of town with her grandparents. I promise I’ll call her soon. Can we please talk about something else?”
“Sorry Ash, we just worry about you, you know?” Rick patted her shoulder.
The small red strapless dress she wore hugged her body like a surgeon’s glove. She’d found it on one of their racks and thought it was festive enough for her mood. She refused to wear the elf hat they bought her in hopes of cheering her up, not wanting to mess up her hair. Even feeling down, Ashley was still a knockout.
“When do you normally do presents?” Scott asked, giving up and changing topics to something he thought was more festive.
“Presents?” Just saying the word cheered Ashley up. “Usually Christmas morning, why?”
Happy with the sudden change, Rick grinned, “You didn’t think we wouldn’t get our favorite girl a gift or two, did you?”
Blushing, Ashley realized she hadn’t bought them anything. They never talked about exchanging gifts, and she suddenly felt stupid for not asking. She had been preoccupied but that was no excuse, Rick and Scott had become like family to her; better than her own parents.
“I didn’t get you two anything; I’m sorry.” Ashley frowned.
“You’re a broke college student, Ash. Don’t worry about it,” Scott said with a smile.
Rick walked over to a cupboard and pulled out a small gift wrapped box and walked it back over. “Trust us, you’ve given us plenty already. More than you know.”
That wasn’t entirely true, Ashley thought. Since she arrived, she hadn’t been in the mood to do much, beyond sulk. Her usually high sexdrive had crashed to depths she hadn’t felt since before her unexpected meeting with two photographers a lifetime ago. She knew they wanted it but never said anything. Scott even offered to give up his room for her, offering to sleep on the studio bed instead. Ashley politely refused, choosing to sleep there herself.
She looked down at the small box placed in front of her, Ashley’s curiosity was piqued. It wasn’t a very big box, about the size of a jewelry box. She strummed her fingers on the table rhythmically, staring at the shiny red and gold paper.
“It’s bothering you, isn’t it?” laughed Rick. “Wondering what’s inside?”
“But if you want to wait...” Scott’s fingers had barely grazed the wrapping before Ashley snatched it from his hands. It made both men laugh, they knew her too well.
“What is it?” Ashley said playfully, holding the small box to her ear and shaking it gently.
“CAREFUL!” Rick shouted, making Ashley freeze. “Just joking.” He laughed harder.
“I hate you,” teased Ashley, her personal pain was temporarily forgotten for the moment.
Scott gestured to the present, “Well ... open it.” He was almost as excited as she was, which only fuelled her own need to know.
Tearing away the paper, she found a black cardboard box. Unsure what was inside, she delicately lifted the lid and found ... blue fabric. More confused than anything, she picked it up. It turned out to be part of a two-piece bikini, with triangle coverings so small they wouldn’t be out of place on a pirate’s face.
“You like?” Rick asked, his face glowing with excitement.
Ashley was confused, it was just a bathing suit. Sure, it was small but it wasn’t anything too crazy to be excited about. She tried to hide her disappointment, putting on a fake smile.
“It’s great guys, thanks,” she lied. Her body couldn’t hide the truth though.
“You hate it, don’t you?” Scott frowned, seeing through her ruse.
“No, it’s just...” Ashley sighed. “It’s my first Christmas without my parents, the whole Trisha thing, and I- if you want to have sex with me, just ask.”
Scott and Rick looked at her and then at each other. They felt terrible, but not for the reasons she thought. This wasn’t going the way they thought.
“Read the tag,” Scott said, his voice soft and kind.
Ashley looked up at him confused, “The ... what?”
“On the bikini bottom.” Rick added, pointing to the slightly larger blue cloth.
She turned over the soft material in her hand, Ashley sought the small tag hidden on the thin string that approached the crotch. The writing was small but distinct and she read it out loud.
“La Spiaggia?” she said confused, not understanding. “This is La Spiaggia?”
They both nodded.
She realized what she was holding and it surprised her. La Spiaggia was a high-end swimwear brand from Italy that a lot of female celebrities wore and regularly featured in the Swimsuit editions of certain sports magazines. She looked at it again, feeling the softness of the material. Although there was not much there, that tiny suit likely retailed for hundreds of dollars. She only knew about the brand because the guys had been trying to get a chance to shoot a photo spread with them for years.
“Wait...” as it started to dawn on her, the smiles of Rick and Scott grew wider. “ ... this doesn’t mean?”
They nodded emphatically, smiles wide as the horizon.
“We wanted to surprise you,” said Rick. “We knew you were having a rough time, so we kept you in the dark while we worked things out.”
Scott held up his hand, “You’ll unfortunately be getting a contract on Monday to process, it’s only for a limited agreement; really a test to shoot a few pieces for their spring line, so it won’t be too bad to deal with.”
Ashley was ecstatic for them, she leapt up and hugged Rick and then Scott. While they were minimizing the deal, it could lead to much bigger things for both of them and she couldn’t be happier.
“When’s the shoot, if it’s for a spring line it’s gotta be soon, right?” asked Ashley, putting on her manager hat and mentally running through their schedules.
Rick replied, “It’s in Malta ... a couple days before New Years for one week; big private estate, pool, beautiful beach ... the works. There will be a few other shoots going on and it’ll be a lot of work; but it’s La Spiaggia!”
“That’s crazy! So quick. Are they supplying models; who do they have lined up for you?” Ashley asked excitedly, wearing her first real smile in weeks.
Rick and Scott grinned. Scott pulled out an envelope from his pocket and handed it to Ashley. She opened it and gasped, seeing a printed airline ticket inside with her name on it. She almost dropped it when her fingers stopped listening to her brain.
“I can’t...” her brain clicking back in. “You’ve gotta get someone better. This is too huge for both of you. You can’t waste this on me.”
“Waste this, she says,” Rick said to Scott in a laugh. “You’re one of the main reasons we got this gig, Ash. Someone put in a good word for us with the higher ups in Italy. Guess who?”
Ashley only needed one guess, “Hah, DiPietro. What about-”
“Your rep, Anya? Already informed and loved the idea. Thinks it could be a huge stepping stone for you; lots of exposure, I think her exact words were,” Scott added.
“Actually,” Ashley corrected him, “ ... I was thinking about the party you both were invited to for New Years; that big social event at that millionaire’s estate. That seemed important and I put you down as going.”
“Pfft, we’re invited to those things all the time; hate them.” Scott said dismissively. “Honestly, bad things can happen at those things and, while we like to keep our options open-”
“-We’re always looking for excuses to get out of them,” finished Rick. “We always have an open invitation anyway; we know the pretty girls. But we aren’t lecherous creeps.”
Ashley cocked her head and gave them a look, “Did you forget how we met, guys? Don’t tell me it was all for work.”
“It was mostly for work,” Rick said, shifting his legs. “We did have an eye for talent, didn’t we?”
Scott got the conversation back on track, “What do you say? Wanna spend a week with us in the Mediterranean?”
She gave it some thought. It would be nice to really get away for a while, and what better place to do that than on white sand beaches. Sure, it would be for work, but that didn’t mean it couldn’t be fun too. It would be the perfect distraction from everything going on in her life.
Ashley broke into a massive smile, “YES! Of course, yes!” She leapt into Scott’s arms, he managed to catch her with her hands on her fine ass, her small dress rode up high. They looked at each other for a split second before Ashley leaned in and kissed him.
“Are you sure about this, Ash?” asked Rick, concerned about her recent emotional turmoil.
Disentangling her lips from Scott’s, Ashley leaned upside down and pulled Rick toward her.
“Yes,” she replied firmly. “I can’t think of any better way to celebrate, Rick.” Inverted, Ashley still found his lips as they shared a passionate kiss. It made her light-headed, but maybe that was just the blood settling in her brain. When they stopped, Ashley had one destination in mind, “Take me to the bed. I’m both of yours tonight.”
Scott carried her to the bed, his strong arms placed her down gently in the center. She bit her lip, giving them both a lustful stare; her legs teasingly crossed at the knees, showing off her smooth thighs and hinting at what lay beyond the red dress. Her summer tan had faded, thanks to long hours of studying and days locked inside with Trisha.
“Are you sure you want to do this, Ash?” Scott asked, giving her an out. While they both knew she loved sex, she was in a vulnerable state.
“Yeah.” Ashley nodded. “It’s been too long and I need some stress relief.”
