Chapter 27

Fantasy Sex Story: Chapter 27 - When a cranky young veteran of the repulsed brutal invasion is found and returned to the Court of the Crimson King, he is shocked by the poor state of the kingdom. North is dragooned into the reigning queen’s retinue, a position fraught with politics, intrigue, magic, and hints of destiny. The Court is an intricate dance that one must master or else disappear into oblivion. Based loosely on the song of the same title by King Crimson.

After another delicious bout of lovemaking and a now empty bottle of whiskey, North returned to his original topic. “Did Gartin tell you anything more about the Butcher? From whence did he come?”

“I asked and she gave me little, claiming that various powers were casting blame on each other. ‘In such a circumstance, threads of truth are difficult to weave into a whole fabric,’” Paquin recited. She took the last sip from the glass. “I wanted to believe her, but seers are notoriously vague when big truths are on the table. ‘The Butcher comes from a poorly marked branch with unreliable gateways’ is all I got from her.”

“He was a complete unknown it would seem,” North concluded. “No one could predict, and none could prepare. We have a partial answer, but with many more questions left open. If I could not enter the gateway where the Egg belonged and survive, how did he? If he could survive there, how could he survive in our world? We are speaking of two incompatible worlds.”

“Perhaps that controller gave the Butcher armor for our world...,” Paquin began, only to taper off.

“ ... which means that Queen Adrianna Victorious didn’t kill the Butcher, she killed the controller and the Butcher died with it.”

“Or the controller attempted to leap into her body, but the two were incompatible,” Paquin mused. “Ach, all speculation and no one appears to comprehend the truth of the matter.” She paused to reconsider. “The rejection of the controller could explain the peculiar burns on her body. Maybe?”

They lay quietly as ideas roiled through their thoughts. North pushed away the Butcher from his thoughts and returned to his original question. “What else did Gartin say?”

“It’s a good thing you’re laying down. Lord Aegis was expected to be the next Crimson King,” Paquin said. “I think Gartin has little respect for our Queen because she chose the wrong husband.”

“Your mother told me our Queen fell in love with Aegis’s brother, Aesir,” North said. “Aesir spurned the title and gave it to his younger brother without much consideration. Aesir retired from the Court and departed for the family estate.”

“Are they all deaf, blind, and dumb?” Paquin spat out.

“Who? The Court?”

“Yes, the Court, the royal, and all the toadies who serve there,” Paquin said before lapsing into silence for a while. “Gartin confirmed that we will have children. If I have my way and the gods are willing, we shall not raise our children within the Court of the Crimson King. Promise me that, North.”

“I don’t think sending them to my mother is a better option,” he answered dryly. “It took a lord to save me from an oblivious life. A small point: we sent the Ne Bosh family southward into exile.”

“Foolish boy, we will raise them in the city and send them to the Academy there,” she said, patting his arm. “Mother will be devastated, but she can visit them on the Rest Day or when Court is not in session.

“But I’m the Jack of Spades,” North protested. “My Queen demands a great deal of me, including my keeping close to her person.”

Paquin sat up on one elbow and looked at him. His eyes were drawn to her dangling breasts until he remembered to look her in the eye. “Men are so obvious.” She laughed for a moment before continuing. “The immediate crisis has passed. Should the Queen get pregnant, and everyone hopes she will, then the pressing needs within the court should ratchet down a degree or two. With my father as the Chancellor, we shall benefit twice over. One, he is not fan of drama or intrigue and two, his ascension relegates my formal position with her Majesty to one step removed. We won’t live at the Queen’s Tower.”

“You’re smart and beautiful,” North said. “I’m excited all over again but I’m a little sore where it counts.”

“Thank the gods,” Paquin said with relief in her voice. “I’m more than a little sore. I didn’t know it was possible, but we’ve outdone ourselves for the moment.”

North placed a hand on her arm, “Do you think we’ll ever know peace and quiet?”

“No one does if they have a life worth living,” Paquin said. “Still, I’m the Fire Witch and you’re the Jack of Spades. Gartin said we could light a fire that would be seen from one end of the Celestial Way to the other end if we chose.”

“Ah, the Celestial Way is not like a piece of string with two ends,” North said. “Some say it’s a ribbon that connects back to itself and others say it’s a twisted ribbon connected to itself where one walks from one side of the ribbon to the other without realizing it.”

“How odd,” Paquin said. “I’ve not walked on the path though; I’ve only jumped from our world to this one, and everyone says this world is tiny.”

North tapped her naked hip. “This world is more of a way-station. It’s not natural, but it’s centrally located near several major branches of human-like creatures and many, many gateways. On the other side of the tavern and the market, which you can’t see from here, there is a series of warehouses and provisioning stores. There’s a big noticeboard filled with job postings and available talent. Beings come and beings go. The locals live on this side. There’s only one Cat’s Whisker though and I don’t understand how, but its reputation reaches far out on the Celestial Way, at least for the human-like.”

Paquin sat up. “How common is it for the Court of the Crimson King to have a direct gateway to this world?”

“Ah, that most beautiful brain is at work again,” North said. “Most human-like worlds have multiple gateways that connect to the Celestial Way. The Court of the Crimson King houses an Anchor of the Gods though. Until Adrianna Victorious found me working here, she believed there was only one gateway, which leads here. I think I’m the only person who knows exactly where the second gateway is, much less understands that it links directly to the Celestial Way.”

“How did you find it?”

“I followed the back trail of the Butcher,” North said. “He was not subtle, and his trail was etched in the dirt and lack of vegetation. I sought out the location of the first sighting of the bastard and worked back from there. Then it was matter of trial and error.”

“Clever,” Paquin concluded. “No one else thought to do it. Our children are going to be quite smart.”

“If they take after you, they’ll probably torch the house a few times before they’re out of diapers,” North said.

“If they take after you, they’ll torch their diapers,” she retorted. “They’ll be terrors, won’t they?”

“Ah, we’ll get your mother and Dame Minogue to raise them for us.” North said, earning a slap on his arm. “They had to stick their noses into our business, and they should learn there is a price to pay. Helping to raise our hellions should be the price they pay.”
