Chapter 21
Fantasy Sex Story: Chapter 21 - When a cranky young veteran of the repulsed brutal invasion is found and returned to the Court of the Crimson King, he is shocked by the poor state of the kingdom. North is dragooned into the reigning queen’s retinue, a position fraught with politics, intrigue, magic, and hints of destiny. The Court is an intricate dance that one must master or else disappear into oblivion. Based loosely on the song of the same title by King Crimson.

“Wait here,” Fianos told the other three. She rapped on the royal door in a coded pattern, paused, and then entered. She shut the door behind her quickly, not allowing even a glimpse of what lay on the other side. The two men looked at each other and shrugged. For North, guard duty was ordinary and what lay on the other side only interfered with the duty of paying attention to what was outside.
For a half bell they waited. North slipped into the soldier’s mindset of unfocused vigilance, as if one was simply staring off into space. Paquin waited a moment and then sat down against the wall in the most unladylike fashion. Bordo adopted the same pose as North. In an inner hall of the tower, the passing of time was not easy to calculate.
The door opened, and Fianos reappeared. “Follow me,” she said, her face betraying nothing.
North recognized the door and then the stairwell once they arrived. He could see that Paquin had a thousand questions on her lips, but she had the intuition to keep her mouth shut. When they entered the mage’s room with the throne at the other end, she gasped, but kept silent.
“Approach,” Adrianna Victorious said. All four came forward. The three soldiers thumped their chests and declared “Crimson” while Paquin curtsied. “First the Jack of Spades and now the Fire Witch. Answer me girl: do you come here to satisfy your lust, or do you come here to serve your Queen?”
Paquin did not jump to answer, taking her time. “I have always served my Queen and in one avenue or another, I will always serve my Queen. I have found a worthy man, the first one I’ve encountered, and he reciprocates our budding romance. He and his friends have explained that if I wish to be with this man, I must choose a different avenue in the service of my Queen. I humbly ask if I may serve you in this manner.”
“She speaks better than the three of you combined,” the Queen said before settling back in her chair. “Paquin, do you know what is required to serve as a guardian of the Anchor?”
“Only what the Court has said, and I am shrewd enough to know that what they say is only part of the truth, and probably distorted at that. No, I do not know, my Queen.”
“In brief, you pledge to protect the Anchor of the Gods with your life,” Adrianna Victorious said. “In the founding of our world, the Crimson King forged a covenant with the gods. They would give us this goodly world and the tools to maintain it. In return, we would defend this precious artifact that makes the Celestial Way possible. Since the day of the Covenant’s binding, the kingdom has been invaded four times by beings seeking to possess the Anchor. The last time, we barely prevailed. Our immediate task is to rebuild our ranks and raise our readiness. We are weakened.”
“I’m not a warrior,” Paquin replied. “How shall I serve?”
The Queen hesitated. “You can defend yourself well enough, although you will need more training as a mage to fight more effectively. You already have a good education as a member of the Court. You will also give of the fruit of your womb.”
“I must pledge my children to the task?” Paquin asked with alarm in her voice.
The Queen bent forward. “Your parents did. What makes you different?”
Paquin swallowed once. “I stand corrected.”
“Good. As decreed by the Crimson King, I am the Master Mage when I stand in these rooms. Upon me does the heaviest responsibility lay, to protect the Anchor and defend our kingdom. We know, and now you understand, that if the Anchor falls, we perish with it. None will come to our aid and there is no rescue, Paquin. Do you understand what I am asking of you?”
“Yes, my Queen, and it terrifies me.”
“Better,” the Queen answered. “There is still a chance that the gods may reject you and rejection is always fatal. You’re a natural though and your beau is the same. He emerged from the binding without even a slight headache. Fianos will lead you to the disrobing room.” She turned to the two men. “Escort me to the next room.”
Adrianna Victorious left her crown next to her throne and walked into the next room, with its long table and chairs. She sat in the middle of the long side and bade the two men to sit across from her. They sat and waited.
“Events are moving more rapidly than I wanted,” she said. “Fianos will take charge of training the Fire Witch, which leaves me short a captain. Lieutenant, I cannot elevate you because of the protests lodged against you for cuckolding. They may have tiny penises, but they still have a point. Before tonight, I encouraged you to find a wife to which you agreed to seek. As of now, I am ordering you.”
“Yes, my Liege,” Bordo answered. “I have it on good authority that the type of woman I seek will be found in the South.”
She made a sour face but said nothing. “Jack of Spades, we received a dispatch from Albion at dusk. The traitor has been sighted there. You will depart tomorrow at sunrise with your ten and ten on horseback. You will proceed with all due haste.”
“Paquin,” North whispered.
“Immediate consummation was never in the cards, Sergeant,” she continued. “Lord Larimer was voted out of the chancellorship by his own so-called supporters late this afternoon. He submitted his resignation while I was in conference with the Secretary of the Exchequer. I bid the fool farewell and paid an extra coin to immediately escort his family from the Court to their estate.”
She took a deep breath. “The Secretary declined as he had already indicated he would, and Lord Orphean is older than dirt and about as attentive. With Lord Merguard’s ascension to the Chancellor’s seat, Paquin becomes a short-term liability. The lords will not affirm Merguard if they know Paquin is a guardian, making the family too powerful for the Court to balance control. To solve this little power play, if Paquin is accepted by the gods, then she will be whisked away to one of my estates with Fianos as her escort. We will not announce her new title until her father is firmly in control of the House of Lords. The only questions as to why she disappeared will be lewd and if we are correct, add misdirection.”
“There are a lot of details here,” North said, and then he shut up as her eyebrow went up.
With each number, she tapped her index finger on the table. “One, the Lord Secretary has a bag of coin waiting for you in his office now. Don’t let him lecture you. Two, your pay level through your military service is upgraded to lieutenant, not that anyone gives a damn because you’re the Jack of Spades. Sergeant Alomar will be your second. Twelve days on horseback should get you there. You only have one mission: get that Powered stone egg or whatever the hell it is. If you kill the traitor, I will reward you with a boon or a bonus.”
