The following Saturday was to be the big day. Hiro had invited Karmi out on a picnic lunch date where he planned to metaphorically wine and dine her before revealing his secret identity and letting the chips fall where they may.
Megan, Diego, and Cass all wished him luck as he headed out to set up the location and meet Karmi at the SFIT quad, which was a really picturesque location at this time of year and practically deserted since it was the weekend. It would have been a struggle to haul the large picnic basket and blanket all the way to the quad, but thankfully Hiro was able to take advantage of Baymax and had the robot do the majority of the heavy lifting. Once there he thanked Baymax for the assistance and sent him on his way with instructions to return later to tidy things up after he and Karmi were done with their meal. This was to be a time for just the two of them, after all.
Even though he had told her to not dress up since they would be eating on the grass, when Hiro saw Karmi arrive he still had to suck in a breath. She hadn’t done anything all that spectacular, her hair was still in its traditional ponytail, but she had swapped out her normal yellow turtleneck sweater for an orange spaghetti strap sundress that seemed to cling to her in all the right ways. It was almost getting too late in the year to be wearing such light clothing but it was a bright sunny day and the heat from the sun more than made up for any chill in the air.
“Wow, you look great!” he said as he rushed over to greet her.
Karmi blushed slightly at the compliment. “Thanks. Same to you.” It was an odd compliment as Hiro was just wearing what he always did, but he took it as it was intended.
The two of them linked arms and Hiro led Karmi to a nearby maple tree, whose leaves were just beginning to change colour. In the sun next to the tree was where he had set up the blanket and food, all of which was carefully prepared by Cass from a selection of the most popular items from her cafe. The meal went perfectly, and Karmi greatly enjoyed the variety of finger foods and desserts. It was over an hour later, with plenty of eating and even more talking, when Karmi finally declared she couldn’t eat another bite. They spent the next twenty minutes just lying side by side on the blanket and watching the clouds in the sky roll by, occasionally commenting on what they looked like.
Their companionable silence ended when Baymax returned. “Hello Hiro. Hello Karmi,” he said when he reached the edge of the blanket. “Did the two of you enjoy your meal?”
The two teens sat up at his arrival. “Yes, it was lovely, though I definitely overate,” Karmi said, patting her belly in contentment. “Did you help make this, Baymax?”
“I did not. Food preparation is not a part of my database. I did however deliver the food and blanket and I am here to retrieve any leftovers, if you have finished eating.”
“Aww, that’s so sweet of you. Thank you!”
“You are welcome.”
“Yeah, thanks for tidying up for us, Baymax,” Hiro said. “I’ll see you later, okay? Karmi and I are going to go for a little walk to work off the extra calories we took in.”
“A well balanced diet and adequate exercise are important parts of a healthy lifestyle,” Baymax said. “Please enjoy the rest of your date.”
Hiro took Karmi by the hand and led her away from their picnic site. “You seem to have a destination in mind,” she said, noting how Hiro seemed to be eager to take her somewhere specific, rather than just wander aimlessly around the campus. “Where are we going?”
“You don’t mind going on a little trip, do you? I promise you won’t be disappointed,” Hiro said.
Curiosity peaked, Karmi nodded and let Hiro lead her towards the nearest tram station. Half an hour later, they were walking through the old industrial section of San Fransokyo, now mostly abandoned with empty warehouses and factories everywhere and nature slowly reclaiming the area with grass and shrubs breaking through the asphalt and concrete. It was peaceful and quiet, with not another soul to be seen.
Karmi looked around, somewhat confused. The privacy was nice but the derelict buildings were not exactly pleasing to the eye and it made one wonder what might be hiding inside them. “You know Hiro, as much as I like spending time with you I have to admit when you told me I wouldn’t be disappointed I wasn’t exactly imagining this. I thought you were going to take me to an art museum or aquarium or something.”
“I have a confession to make,” Hiro said, turning to her abruptly. “I haven’t been entirely honest with you.”
Karmi looked around where they were. They had stopped in front of an old factory whose rusty front gate lay closed but looked ready to fall apart at the slightest touch. Many of the windows on the building were broken and there was ivy and moss growing all over the sides. There was a large sign on top that read “Frederickson Candy Co.”, though it was severely worn with age and lack of maintenance.
“Um, you’re not about to tell me that you’re actually a serial killer and this is where you take all your victims before you murder them, are you?” she joked.
Hiro chuckled lightly. He opened the gate, which swung open surprisingly easily with no squeak of rusty hinges, and led her towards the main building. “No. You’re actually about as far from the truth as possible with that. What I have to reveal is pretty significant and I figured it might be better to show you rather than tell you.”
“Show me what? An abandoned candy factory? And are we even allowed to be here? Isn’t this private property?”
“It is private, but we’re allowed to be here. Fred’s family owns the place.”
“Oh right. Frederickson. I keep forgetting that guy’s one of the richest people in the country. He seems so ... not rich.”
They had now reached the front door. “Yeah,” Hiro agreed. “And like Fred, appearances can sometimes be deceiving.” He then opened a panel next to the door, revealing a highly advanced palm reader and keypad.
“What the...?” Karmi said, startled at seeing such an expensive piece of technology attached to such a decrepit looking building.
Hiro entered a swift series of numbers on the pad then scanned his palm. “Your hand, please?” he asked Karmi.
She tentatively gave her hand to Hiro, who gently placed it against the palm reader. There was a pulse of light as her hand was scanned, then came the sound of rushing air followed by a deep but muffled thump and then the door slowly swung inwards.
“That would be the airlock disengaging,” Hiro said.
“Airlock?”
“Yep. This whole place is sealed tighter than Fort Knox. Nothing gets in or out without the proper clearance. You now have the proper clearance, by the way. Care to see what’s inside?”
Definitely curious but also more than a little worried, Karmi gripped Hiro’s hand but let herself be brought inside. Passing the door, she noticed that just the outer surface was wood. Behind that was nearly a foot of solid steel with bars that would lock seamlessly with the other side of the entrance. Hiro was right. If that door was closed, and the surrounding walls were similarly reinforced, not even a tank would be able to force its way through.
The door automatically shut and locked itself once they were safely through and lights came on by themselves to illuminate what looked like a spacious conference room, where a large round table took up the central space. Karmi’s breath caught in her lungs as spot lights came on, highlighting six very recognizable superhero suits around the perimeter of the room. On the wall, a large screen activated and something that looked very similar to Baymax’s eyes appeared and looked down at them.
“Good afternoon Hiro. Hello Karmi. It is nice to meet you. I am Base-max,” said the female-voiced AI.
“Um, hello,” Karmi replied, waving towards the screen. She was definitely feeling overwhelmed. She knew what she was seeing but her brain was having a hard time processing it all. “Hiro, what is all this?”
“It’s exactly what you think it is. This is the secret headquarters of Big Hero 6.”
“B-but that would mean you ... you are...”
Hiro let go of Karmi’s hand and moved to stand in front of his own super suit. Turning to face her, he struck what he hoped was a heroic pose. “I am Captain Cutie.”
Karmi’s eyes went wide as she took in the sight of Hiro standing right next to the armor she was so familiar with, her mind finally unable to ignore the similarities between her idol and her boyfriend. Surprising Hiro, her face suddenly went the deepest shade of red he had ever seen and she looked like she was on the verge of crying. She quickly covered her face in her hands and turned away. “I’m sorry!” she cried.
He rushed over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay. What’s wrong? I’m the one who should be sorry. I’ve been keeping the truth about Captain Cutie a secret from you. I thought learning the truth would make you happy.”
Karmi turned and buried her face in his shoulder so he couldn’t see her crying. “It’s not that. I am happy! More than happy. I’m just so embarrassed right now.”
Wrapping his arms around Karmi, Hiro asked, “Embarrassed? What for?”
“All this time ... even before we first met, I’ve been crushing hard on Captain Cutie. Every time you saw me gush about him you must have thought I was...”
“A weird, obsessive fangirl?”
“Yes! A weird, obsessive fangirl. And when Professor Granville paired us up, I treated you like dirt while idolizing, um, the other you. You must have thought I was a major creep.”
Hiro gently stroked Karmi’s back. “I’m not going to lie. Yes, I did. Especially when you started writing your fanfiction.”
“Oh god!” Karmi said, burying her face even harder into Hiro’s shoulder. “Please don’t tell me you read all that!”
Hiro grinned. “Every chapter. But it’s okay. Yes, it was weird at first. Very weird. But the more I got to know you, the more I grew to appreciate your ideas. Don’t forget, it was your stories that inspired me to create Overdrive Mode, which in turn saved all our lives back when Momakase kidnapped you.”
Hiro could feel Karmi smile as she recollected that event. “That was scary, but I was so happy when you came to rescue me,” she said. “Do you think that woman actually thought I was your girlfriend?”
“Honestly, I doubt it. But maybe we ought to thank her.”
“Thank her?”
“Yeah. It was because of that incident that I stopped seeing you as just an annoying fangirl and started seeing the real you.”
“An annoying fangirl who has the occasional good idea?”
Hiro chuckled. “Exactly.” He stroked her hair, coaxing her to look up at him. When their eyes met he said, “But look at you now. You really are the girlfriend of Captain Cutie.”
Karmi smiled and wiped away the remnants of her tears. “I am, aren’t I?” She bit her lower lip as she thought of something then said, “Um, this may sound strange, but you know that I got over my crush for Captain Cutie when I ... started to have feelings for you.”
Hiro nodded, silently encouraging her to continue.
“However, seeing as how he is you and you are him, I was wondering ... would you be okay if I kissed you the way I’ve always imagined kissing him?”
“Karmi, you can kiss me however you’d like,” Hiro said. At least, that was what he was going to say but as soon as he got to the word ‘kiss’ Karmi launched herself at him and sealed his mouth with her own. Surprise gave way to delight as her tongue followed immediately after, invading his mouth and teasing his own tongue. Hiro then wrapped his arms around Karmi and kissed her back with as much enthusiasm as he could muster.
The two teens ignored the passage of time, lost in a haze of passion, and when they finally broke apart they had somehow ended up on the conference table itself, with Karmi sitting on the edge and Hiro positioned between her legs while their chests pressed tightly against each other. Hiro could feel Karmi’s stiff nipples poking through the fabric of her dress, and she no doubt felt his hardness pressing into her groin, but neither seemed to mind as they gazed into each other’s eyes. Each could see their own desire for more mirrored in the other’s face, but the need for oxygen held them back from immediately resuming their make-out session.
“That was nice,” Hiro managed to say as he caught his breath.
“Uh-huh,” Karmi agreed, unable to think of anything more eloquent to say.
Hiro really wanted to kiss Karmi again but in his current state he couldn’t trust himself to not go too far. “How about a tour?” he suggested. “It’s a pretty fancy place and it’ll give us a chance to, um, calm down.”
Mentioning the need to calm down seemed to make Karmi realise how aroused both of them were. “Yeah, probably a good idea,” she said, letting him go from her tight embrace.
Hand in hand, Hiro led Karmi to the nearest door. “Um, just to be clear,” he said before he opened the door, “all this has to stay a secret. I trust you won’t go talking to your parents or your followers about any of this, right?”
“Duh. Of course. As if you even had to ask. I’d take this secret to the grave if necessary.”
Hiro nodded. “I know, but I just had to make sure it was explicit. Anyway, this is the med-bay,” he said, showing her what looked like a state-of-the-art hospital room. “Here Baymax can treat any injuries we might get, including fixing broken bones, stitches, and even minor surgery if needed. Thankfully we’ve never had to use that last feature.”
The next room he brought her to was full of computer equipment. “This is the server room,” he explained. “Here is where Base-max’s brain is located, and where we house all the hardware and software needed to monitor the city and to run the Sim-max.”
“Sim-max?”
“Our virtual reality simulator. That’ll be the last stop on our tour. We also have our own generator, so even if the city grid goes down for whatever reason, we can still be fully operational here.”
Hiro then showed Karmi several more rooms. There was a small kitchen, a personal gym, a locker room with laundry machines, men’s and women’s showers, and even a research lab.
“Wow! This is even better than our lab at school!” Karmi said as she marvelled at all the equipment.
“This is where we develop any new tech and where we repair our equipment,” Hiro explained. “You can often find at least one of the team tinkering with stuff here if they are on watch duty.”
“Nobody seems to be here right now,” Karmi pointed out.
“Yeah. They knew I was bringing you here today and I asked them to give us some privacy for when I told you the truth.”
“So we have this whole place all to ourselves?”
“Technically speaking Base-max is here too, but yeah, as far as humans are concerned it’s just the two of us.”
There was also a large underground storage room where all their extra equipment and supplies were kept, but they didn’t spend any real time exploring that. And then Hiro finally brought Karmi to the simulator.
Other than its size, the rather plain looking room wasn’t all that impressive. It was covered from floor to ceiling in some kind of blue tile but otherwise it was completely empty. Karmi was no slouch though, and was able to put things together pretty fast. “Hold on, is this entire room a hard-light projector?” she asked as she inspected one of the tiles.
“Yep. Although not everything we use here is made exclusively of light. We use a combination of real objects covered with flexible display fabric as well as hard light holograms to create a virtual environment that you can physically interact with, no VR goggles or gloves required.”
“So what kind of environments can you create?”
“Practically anything, so long as Base-max has the data for it. You mentioned an aquarium before so ... Base-max, put us in a tropical coral reef complete with fish, please.”
“One moment. Processing,” the AI said.
A few seconds later some of the tiles split apart and square blocks lifted up from below, creating a very blocky landscape. Then the tiles began to glow, then shimmer as the holographic technology kicked in and suddenly the room seemed to vanish, replaced by a very realistic looking coral reef, including seaweed swaying and fish swimming all over the place. Karmi instinctively held her breath at the sight of fish swimming around her, but relaxed and started breathing again as her mind registered that despite what her eyes were showing her, she was not actually underwater.
“Amazing!” she said as a fish swam near her. She reached out but it skittishly swam away when she was just about to touch it, making her giggle. “If I didn’t know this wasn’t real, I’d swear that it was.”
They spent a few minutes exploring the reef, an experience that would normally have required scuba gear and travelling to the other side of the world. Karmi had to remind herself several times to move normally and not as though she were underwater, the simulation was that immersive.
“We normally use this for combat simulations, so it’s nice to just have fun exploring,” Hiro said. “Where else would you like to go?”
“Um ... Paris?” she asked.
The room shifted. In less than a minute all signs of the reef were gone and Karmi and Hiro were standing at the base of the Eiffel Tower. Several robots also emerged from the floor and as they started moving they transformed into pedestrians going about their business. One of the robots actually bumped into her and caused her to stumble slightly. “Mes excuses, mademoiselle!” the automaton said in a heavy French accent before going on his way. Again, had Karmi not known better she would have sworn she was actually in Paris. The sights and sounds were indistinguishable from the real deal.
Hiro and Karmi spent a good half hour holding hands and sneaking in the occasional kiss as they explored the virtual Paris. There was only so much room to walk in the simulator itself but the way the environment moved around them gave them the illusion that they were actually outside and could walk forever in a single direction. They eventually made their way to a quiet park bench where Karmi sat on top of Hiro’s lap and they resumed their kissing in earnest. Pedestrians passed by every so often, lending an air of authenticity to the location, but unlike real people the automatons completely ignored the young couple as Karmi straddled Hiro and their hands excitedly roamed over the other’s back, arms, and legs.
It was obvious that both of them wanted more. Hiro risked bringing his hands up to graze the sides of Karmi’s breasts and she moaned into his mouth with approval, gripping his shirt tightly in her hands. As much as she loved doing this, the illusion of being out in public was distracting her from what she really wanted.
Breaking their kiss, Karmi caught her breath before looking around their environment. “Um, Base-max?” she said.
“Yes, Karmi?” the AI replied.
“As beautiful as this place is, I think I’d like to have a little more privacy.”
“The pedestrians can be removed if you would like,” Base-max offered.
“I was thinking more of a change of venue. You can create pretty much any location, right?”
“As long as there is sufficient data, yes.”
“Then how about Hiro’s bedroom?”
“Karmi?” Hiro said, both surprised and excited at what her request implied.
