“Think he really meant it?”
At Eva’s quiet question, Sophia rolled her head along the airplane seat back, shifting her gaze from the sun-kissed cloud tops beyond a small oval window to find the slender beauty’s confused expression. Earlier, while waiting to board the flight home, they’d shared a phone call with both Aiden and Anna.
The deep voice that sent tingles through her had begun by explaining everything that had happened. His sexy companion had stated she was pregnant, and a doctor visit had been scheduled. Then he’d clarified the child wasn’t his. Which had been followed by her shaky clarification. There were apparently two children.
All of that, already enough to leave their heads spinning, had been topped off by the biggest bomb: Aiden’s question to Eva. Although gentle, the immense pulse from the distant man had kept her ribs wobbling long after the call ended. They still quivered as she grinned at the slim figure sitting beside her.
“Oui, but you know this already.” With a grin, she reached over to caress the raven-haired woman’s trembling arm.
“Why me?”
Sophia laughed; it held a tinge of sadness. “I am too old. Anna has a husband. She wishes to keep him. The others ... They support him.”
“I’m not so sure about—”
“He hasn’t asked you formally yet.” Another laugh left her as she lifted Eva’s hand. “I see no ring, mon petite.”
“Do you think—”
“Stop thinking so much.” She twisted and leaned, finding the other’s soft lips.
As they kissed, Sophia noted passengers either staring or turning away. None of them mattered, only the tender throbs she was sending and receiving, both from Eva and a distant, but mile by racing mile ever-closer, Aiden. After a while she pulled her mouth from the trembling softness, letting the younger woman’s rapid breaths heat her face. The glittery pointed tongue capable of driving her to the edge of sanity and well beyond zipped around glossy lips.
“You don’t mind, Sophie?”
Eva lifted a hand to caress her jaw. Heat flared through her as she pressed into the drifting digits. When one slipped along her lower lip, she bent to place a quick kiss on its tip. A giggle erupted from her sexy tormentor. It was a cute sound and made her grin.
“Non. I have you, and him, and Anna. We are all close and—”
Her voice ended in a groan when Eva’s other hand slid under her skirt. The plane blurred as delving fingers moved upward between her parting thighs.
“Hmm, no. I have you, filthy Sophie,” Eva whispered before giggling into her ear.
“Oui. Oui, umm, yes, you do,” left her amid rapid huffing as the gentle scratch of fingernails roamed soaking lace.
Once more a toy for the twinkly-eyed imp, she rolled her head along the seat cushion, hissing through clenched teeth, letting those divine fingers tease her, pressing, rubbing just enough, but not too much. When Eva’s other hand clasped the rear of her hair, pulling their mouths closer, her breathing raced.
“You’re not too old, Sophie,” she whispered before running that talented tongue around Sophia’s mouth.
“Y-You are—”
“—happier than you can possibly believe with you in my life.” Eva leaned, tapping her lips just once, but drawing a loud moan from deep within the older woman. “Don’t you ever leave me ... or Aiden.”
“Non, mon chéri.” In the petite woman’s tight grip, she could only shake her head a little. “I never—”
Her voice ended in a muffled groan as their mouths met, and the delight-giving tongue found hers, chasing, playing, teasing, shoving. Between her shaking legs, the fingers also moved, quickening their pace, groping with more force, igniting wave after wave of pleasure across her already exhausted nerves. The week had been long; Eva, blessed with youth, remained insatiable.
Alright, she wasn’t that old, and desire once more welled up within her. As her hand sank, prying apart Eva’s legs, driving under her short skirt to find sodden panties, the languid flashes in those soft warm brown eyes matched a series of strong pulses. In his own special way, Aiden was present.
From somewhere beyond the dark-haired beauty humping her palm and fingering the lace ever quicker, that delightful man sent an enormous surge. It swept over her like a heated blanket on a chilly night, warming every inch. Eva’s sudden muffled gasp and the rapid shuddering of her tongue said she was enjoying its arrival as well.
Love. Pure, unsullied, swirling, and hugging. It swept over them as cries from both shuddering forms melded amid mashing lips.
At the desk in his office, Aiden leaned back, wearing the best of all smiles. Not only due to the sensations from his homeward-bound ... harem members. He chuckled at Larial’s word, but what else could he use? Commune? Collective? Extended family? He was the sole patriarch. With a sigh, he scratched his skull and looked out the window.
Throughout the city, a steady drizzle left everything gray and glittering. He turned to glance at the towering doors of the head office across the way, then the smaller shut door just beyond his doorway. Once back, filthy Sophie and sexy Eva in close proximity to him all day long? Given all that’d been shared, and if the gorgeous raven-haired woman who made his heart thump loudest accepted his tentative offer, life would become even more trying.
“Ring shopping,” he muttered, then scanned the distant darkness. “Not you, old friend.”
He’d needed to probe Eva. Anna had recommended he wait until they landed, but the prickling hairs on the back of his neck remained ... annoying. Time was short and growing ever shorter. Until what fateful occurrence he couldn’t discern for sure. Since the restaurant meeting, the strange calmness persisted, but the ring had grown ... unsettled.
At its sudden shudder, he nodded. “Yeah, just won’t tell me why, though, huh?”
Receiving only the usual silence, he exhaled and got to his feet. Muscles cracked as he stretched his back and shoulders while heading for the towering pane of glass. His view found the glimmering tower housing Leah’s apartment.
“And what about her?” he whispered, fogging the window.
In their heated discussion at the restaurant, Treacle hadn’t specifically said “no” to releasing Leah, but neither had the demon agreed. As such, a sense of foreboding lingered, like one of the heavy clouds drifting past the windows, blocking more and more light.
After sharing that wonderful night and an awkward three-way goodbye, with Anna still stunned and rubbing her belly, the slender young beauty had departed the next morning. His gaze shifted to the suit jacket draping his chairback. At least his phone held her number, and she’d grinned in Anna’s embrace while taking his.
“So, now we’re dating, maybe?”
Although he started to chuckle, it died; the air was too leaden. At any second, she could disappear, returning to Treacle’s clutches, spinning up for some other target halfway across the planet. Perhaps not even in the same damn timeline. That was the fear she’d mumbled amid shaky breaths during one of their breaks, wrapped in crumpled sheets.
No, nothing had been resolved. Sure, Treacle, then Felicity, appearing from out of left field, had agreed he’d been tested, measured, gauged, whatever. His fists tightened.
“But what the fuck does that mean? Tested for what?” A snarl escaped him as he spun on his heel and marched to the desk. “By whom, if not them?”
After crumpling into his chair, he exhaled all the air in the universe and sucked it back inside. Then did it again. Two additional, rib-expanding heavy breaths finally let him lean forward to review the notes from the China delegation.
Because no, he hadn’t forgotten about Hui Ying. The way her dark eyes had flashed at him whenever Blaine wasn’t looking, which was rare. The black-eyed man remained fixated on the ring. Yet, as predicted, other than a few snide comments, there’d been no opportunity to endanger it or him. Which begged the question: why had he appeared at all? Okay, two questions. What was Mary accomplishing at his side?
“Treacle knew I still had you,” he murmured, gazing off toward his distant home.
