I dialed the office and fortunately my aunt answered the phone. At least she wasn’t out looking at homes with a client. She seemed a little surprised that I was calling (she knows how I like to sleep in) but didn’t press the issue.
“Aunt Linda, I’m not sure how to say this but I don’t know who else to turn to now.”
“What are you talking about Kelly? Hell, you know you can always come to me about anything.”
“Well. It’s about Kristi...”
“Oh great, NOW what has she gotten herself into? Where the hell is she anyway? She’s late again.” My aunt sighed audibly over the phone.
“Well, it’s not what SHE is into, it’s who is into HER.”
“Ohhhhh, so THAT’s why the little slut’s late this morning. I figured it must have been something like that although I guess at this time of day I figured it would be the two of you. So what’s the big deal? It’s not like we?re all that busy here at this time of year so I wasn’t all THAT worried about it.”
To say Kristi and her mom have a rather unique relationship would be the understatement of the year. Still, it seemed to work for both of them so who was I to say anything?
“So you know someone named Todd?”
There was silence on the line and I wasn’t sure if it meant she was thinking about it or if she didn’t want to answer.
“Well ... I guess you could say that. Why do you ask?”
I went on from there to explain to her the events of the morning and my concerns about what she was doing. I hadn’t quite finished when my aunt cut back in.
“You know Kelly, we’ve talked about this before so I’m not so sure what you expect me to do? Frankly, if this is the Todd I think we?re talking about, I can’t say I really blame her. Have you seen the kid yet? He’s pretty damn cute.”
THAT wasn’t exactly the response I was hoping for. Still, sooner or later we needed to work this out and if I was going to have any success it was paramount that my aunt be on board with me.
“No, I haven’t see him yet but he certainly didn’t sound very old,” I said, trying not to let the frustration escape through the phone, ‘she won’t listen to me about this - we both know that, so I was thinking maybe this would be a good time for something like an intervention before she gets herself in hot water someday.”
“An intervention? You’re kidding ... right?”
