The maitre d’ interrupted us. “Madame? Monsieur? Your table is ready.” He escorted us to a small table in a corner of the dimly lit restaurant.
When we were seated, she answered. “Do you remember the essay I wrote to win that scholarship?”
“You worked on it for months.”
“I showed it to my boss a couple years ago. She encouraged me to use it as the basis for a book about my fieldwork. The foundation paid me to write it, so most of the proceeds go back to them, which is as it should be. Money is great, but that isn’t the point. Maybe someone, somewhere, will read my words and think.”
“What brought you back here?”
“My boss is speaking in front of the State legislature on Monday. There’s a vote coming up on a new social welfare funding bill that addresses some needs of families with disabled children in custodial care. She’s using part of my work in her speech, so she asked me to come along.
We’ve been in meetings with committee people for the last couple days, and we have sessions with a few of them this weekend. Sunday evening we’ll go over her speech, and Monday after her address to the legislature, we’ll head back to the office. My schedule is crazy, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see you.”
“I’m glad. I missed you, Katie.”
“I was afraid you’d say that. I hurt you, didn’t I?”
“No. You were honest. I always had the sense you would leave some day.”
“If I hadn’t left when I did, maybe we’d be together now. Maybe not. Who knows? One thing is sure: I can’t be tied down to a man. I could let myself fall in love with you every time I see you, but it wouldn’t work. Not because of you. Because of me. Starting a romance with you again would be a selfish mistake. I’m married to my work.” She touched my knee under the table. “Please tell me you understand.”
“I do.”
We finished our entrees. After the waiter took our plates, she said, “This is nice. We haven’t been out on a date since we left for college. Do you want dessert?” Her hand touched my knee again.
“I could eat a little more, but not something from the menu here.” I pulled her hand off my knee and held it. “I remember what we did on some of those dates. I also remember your favorite letters. T U T I O Y T?”
“I have to go back to my hotel in the morning to get ready for a meeting.”
“Is that a no?”
“Not a no, but should we, Ed?”
