“I’m not surprised. Everyone likes her. Hell, I like her, probably better than I did when she was younger. She matured a lot since high school. She was a bright, cute girl, and she grew up into a bright, attractive young woman. Frank adores her because she gives as good as she gets when he teases her. A couple weeks later, Katie lay naked in my bed, recovering from our latest session. “I’m taking a sick day on Monday, and I’ll drive myself to work Tuesday in case I’m running late.”
“Why?”
“I have an interview Monday afternoon, about four hours from here. If it goes well, they promised a second and final interview first thing Tuesday morning, so I won’t have to miss another day of work.”
“An interview?”
“I told you months ago I didn’t necessarily plan to stay in the area.”
“An interview for what?”
“There’s a new foundation working on reforms in infant and child custodial care. They need someone to do field work, visiting institutions and writing reports and my personal impressions.”
“This is for Billie, isn’t it?”
“You know me well, don’t you? When I was little, I wanted to fix him and everything his condition did to the family, so yes, it’s for him and my family and people like us. Babies are born every day with birth trauma, genetic mutations, and other difficulties that ruin lives, not just theirs, but the entire family’s.
I don’t know much about the causes of birth defects, but I know the result first-hand. There are doctors and researchers working on prevention and treatment, but hundreds of thousands of families still suffer financially and emotionally. I can use my education to try to make a difference.”
“How much do they pay?”
“Less than I’m making here, but I’ll get by. Now that my loans are paid off, I can manage on a lower wage. The foundation owns an apartment complex next to their offices, and they give a discount to employees. When I travel for work I’ll drive one of their fleet cars.”
