Jason walked in and got dirty looks from both Selena and Ostara. Carlson was doing something by the printer. “I guess I must have done something to get such a welcome.” He turned his head toward Lipson. “Good morning, Captain, good morning, Private. Good morning, Lieutenant. I trust you all slept well.”
Ostara jumped, shaking herself. “Sorry, sir. Good morning. Unfortunately, it was a little rough going last night. But we managed to get some sleep.” Ostara nudged Selena as Jason walked past them to the inner office. “I called the hotel to see if you would want to join me and the Private for dinner. I was told you hadn’t checked in. We tried to but couldn’t reach you. We didn’t know where you were.”
“Yes, well, thank you for the thought, but something came up, and I had to make do with other arrangements.”
Ostara again nudged Selena as she stepped in and to the desk, setting a bowl and a large coffee cup on the desk. “We stopped for breakfast, and the private thought was that you might like this. She said it was good but not like home.” Jason looked at the dish and sighed. Huevos Rancheros was the first breakfast he and Selena had together.
He picked up the coffee and then the TV remote. He searched the regional news. He hit on one that was talking about the warehouse. “All of you listen up,” he addressed everyone but looked dead at Selena. “Three days ago, I was on the path of retirement, content and happy. I had time I had to use up before that could happen, as regulations required. That all changed.
Thanks to the President, that is no longer the case. Now, we are all on a path. And in time, you will learn more. Until then, you need to look at the bigger picture of possibilities. We will all need to adjust in some way. Some more than others. But it can not be helped. If there is a problem with this, speak up now, and we can arrange for you to transfer out.”
All four were listening to the news.
“No problems sir. It’s just an adjustment. We can do that,” Ostara swallowed hard when the reporter spoke of armed terrorists.
“Good. Now, I need you and the Lieutenant to make some calls and get all the reports on this incident. Check with local PD to see if they have anything.”
“Yes sir,” she answered and pulled everyone out to the outer office once the broadcast was over. He saw that she changed the tv station before taking a seat. Lipson left after stealing a donut from the box on the desk. He was back a half hour later.
“These cleared security for you, Colonel. I don’t know why they called me to bring them to you.”
Jason looked at the box markings and nodded. “Because I had a notation in the system for that. This pertains to you as well.”
“Okay, ladies and gents. The next stage is here,” he announced. “Now read this carefully completely. Think before submitting. There is no getting it back once it is sent. You will be held to it.” He opened one box and pulled out a stack of tablets. He turned on two of them and then opened the next box. He pulled out two more tablets. When whatever came up on it, he sighed. Pulling out four more tablets, he turned them all on. All had the same thing. He checked the last ones in the other box to be sure.
“Are you still in the reserves?” he asked Lipson.
“Yes, sir. In fact, I have my weekend coming up.”
“Okay this will do for you then,” he handed one of the tablets to him. “Read slowly. Understand what you are doing is binding.”
He went in and got on the phone to try and get the issue he had fixed. It wasn’t a hard fix; I just had to rework a few things. He was half done when he got the alerts. One after the other. Four of them.
Please tell me that you didn’t do what I know you shouldn’t have done,” was all he got to say before the door flew open. Lipson stopped himself from reacting as the President stormed in.
“Do you know what that no-good son of a bastard cock sucking asshole fucking twat did,” she screamed. Everyone was on their feet and staring. “What? She demanded. “Never heard someone cursing before? I didn’t realize I was in a room with so many virgin ears. Except for the private, perhaps. Apologies to her.”
“Of course, Madam President. Please feel free to continue and to come down any time and curse till your heart is content. Yell at the wall if no one is here. Just that you might want to close the door first.” Jason leaned over to the Lieutenant and whispered to him. Carlson nodded and ran out the door to talk to the onlookers. “As for your question, it would be good to know which one you speak of. This is DC, and there are dozens of them around.”
“That cunt ass predecessor of mine, President Bricklin. He told me that he was not coming to finish any discussion. He was too busy. Not ten minutes after I talked to him, every member of the SSG oversight quit. I now have senators Parks, Rosen, Queen, and Wilden calling for a dissolution of the SSG and confiscation of all assets.”
Jason sat and started typing. He looked and sighed. “Well, that’s two good things at least. Everyone here has signed a nondisclosure, and the committee’s access to SSG files was suspended. They technically were collecting the pay and not doing a job. As for the dissolution of the SSG, that isn’t entirely possible. It is interlocked into every government agency. To dissolve the SSG, you would need a unanimous vote from both the House and Senate. If you so choose, you can dissolve your administration’s affiliation with the SSG. It would suspend the SSG from operations that require government sanctions. If you were to successfully dissolve it, the Charter stipulates what happens to any assets. Most are returned in exchange for a monetary value. The funds are left to the guard for their service.”
“Dissolve it? I am trying to make use of it. I don’t want to dissolve it. Or cause it to be so.”
