Chapter 7

It had been a couple of months since I spoke to Dana personally. She drove as if the Devil himself was chasing us. I had to get her to calm down. “Dana, what’s going on?”
She shook her head. “I’m not the one who needs to talk to you.”
“That’s fine,” I said, gripping the dashboard as she swerved around another car. “How about slowing down so we don’t get into an accident before we arrive at our destination?”
She glanced at me, maneuvered us into another lane, and then nodded.
For the next couple of minutes, we were both silent. We turned onto West Arkansas Lane and then pulled into a parking lot next to a Goodwill store. Dana pulled up to the other stores connected at the back and parked in front of Pink Rabbit Tailoring.
We got out, and I looked up at the sign. A magus mark hovered over the sign. The mark told other Magi that she was one too.
I followed Dana to the entrance, and she held the door open for me. We stood in the front section of the store for only a minute before another woman opened a curtain leading to the back and waved us through. I had been hoping for a chance to talk, but obviously, that wasn’t happening.
Dana and I entered the main storage and work area of the store. The large mirrors along the back wall, which had made the space feel so much larger, were gone. More racks of clothes stood along those walls. Otherwise, the place had the same feel as before: barely controlled chaos.
I turned to the woman who had let us in. Her name was Shondra, and this was her store. She almost bowled me over when she hugged me. “Oh, my dear boy! I am so glad you’re here.” She pulled back enough to see my face. “How are you doing? I heard about your mother.”
I gave her a lop-sided grin and hugged her again. “Thank you, and I’m coping.”
She stepped back and looked me over. “Well, at least you’re dressing better.”
I smiled and waved at her. “You’re looking good, too.”
“Honey,” she said, giving me a playful pose, “I always look good.”
We shared a quiet laugh, and then she said, “So, down to business. I’m sure you’ve already run into several problems today.”
“You mean the spells?” I asked.
“Mm-hmm,” she replied. “Most are going to be annoyances at worst. It’s all about making you look bad.”
I frowned. “Look bad to whom?”
“Your House members,” she said. “Someone wants you out.”
I nodded. “I’ve already been told by one member that I should step down.”
“Really? What happened?”
