Jason was up very late, using the GenMod software to set up the genetic patterns. The new body would be very attractive. It would have superior strength and endurance. Back at home, Elsa was making dinner as Jason and Katie arrived. They hadn’t explained to Elsa what they had planned. They did that over dinner. Elsa took the news surprisingly well once they finally convinced her that what they wanted REALLY WAS possible.
“Okay. I won’t tell anybody,” Elsa said. “But you’ll HAVE to tell the world of this after you do it. It’s not fair to keep it to yourself if others might benefit.”
Jason still had some explaining to do. “We’re not sure it’s a benefit, Elsa. Not yet. Katie’s idea to become ‘one’ using the Device had merit, but-- you saw what happened-- the trip itself did something to us. I found that Katie was just what I wanted...”
Katie took over. “ ... And I found that I had to have Jason. We’re too far entwined. I couldn’t live without him. It’s hard for us to be apart. Now we won’t have to be.”
“Why didn’t you just marry each other?” Elsa asked. “That’s what people have been doing for years.”
Katie answered her roommate. “Yes, but we’re the first ones to have been united mentally, not just physically or legally. We have to take the last step.”
There was a minute or two where nobody said anything.
