Just after midnight, Barrett dressed in dark clothes, grabbed a ski mask, gloves, and key card, and walked to his garage. It was pitch black, but he could see fine. Then he drove the Tahoe to the rear of the Holliday Inn Express and parked out of camera range. After putting on his ski mask and gloves, Barrett maneuvered through the parking lot, avoiding the cameras. Upon entering the rear door of the motel, he took the stairway to the second floor. After checking for cameras, Barrett entered room 217 using the keycard.

He saw all their clothes, a duffle bag of equipment, and two laptops inside the room. Then he searched the room and found their passports, SVR IDs, and 10k cash under a mattress. Barrett put everything in the duffle bag and returned to the Tahoe. He left their clothes and keycard on the bed for the maid to find. After returning the Tahoe to the garage, he took the duffle bag to his warehouse, dropped it off, and returned home.

Zeus and Hera greeted him when he arrived, so he quickly changed clothes, and they went to the warehouse. Barrett did his forms and tai chi, then went to the office and felt the urge to visit the alien machine. When he put his fingers on the keyboard, they stuck, and then he blacked out. He awakened dizzy and confused, then his head cleared, and he went to check out the contents of the duffle bag.

They had a professional-grade camera with various accessories and lenses, including 400mm zoom. There were binoculars, two Glock 9mm’s with silencers, a bag of zip ties, and a roll of duct tape. Then he turned on one of the laptops, which was in Russian. After fogging up the number keys, it took twenty minutes to find the login code. Five keys had skin oil on them, so it took longer.

Once inside, he checked the files, and they had a login and password memorized for the SVR. So Barrett connected to his alias cloud account using a neighbor’s WiFi signal and down-loaded his “The Propagator” worm. Then he signed into the SVR server, installed his worm on the SVR mainframe computer, and logged off the site. He hoped it was the one at the Canadian Russian Embassy and not Moscow.

Then he went online and checked the local news to see if they reported anything about Thomas Stanton’s car crash behind the bar. There was a small article about a vehicle driving too fast crash into a tree behind a bar. The driver was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. The driver’s name wasn’t released to the media. The vehicle caught fire, and so did the tree it crashed into, but the fire was contained before further damage could occur.

Barrett shut off the Russian laptop and put everything into his hidden storage room. After his dog training appointment, he’d call the local hospital and ask for Thomas Stanton’s room number to send flowers. Once he had Thomas’s room number, he would visit him and find out what he had done with the briefcase contents. Barrett was sure if he didn’t get it quickly, the SVR would visit him soon, and he didn’t want Thomas using him as a scapegoat for their failed operation.

Arriving home, he showered, dressed, ate breakfast, and then went to his dog training appointment. An hour later, Barrett finished training Buffy, their final training session. Now, he needed to call the first person on the waitlist. But first, Barrett called their local hospital and asked for Thomas Stanton’s room number. He told the receptionist it was for a flower delivery, and Thomas was in room 324.

Barrett headed to his garage, drove the Tahoe to the hospital, and went to the gift shop. He bought six helium-filled get-well-soon balloons and used the staircase to Thomas’ room. Barrett used the balloons to hide his face from the cameras in the hospital. When he arrived at room 324, he shut the door, let go of the balloons, and stared at Thomas. Thomas had a frozen look on his face as Barrett asked where the additional package was in the briefcase.

Thomas said it was at the train station locker 3249, and the key was on my key ring in the drawer with my wallet. Barrett told Thomas he would forget Barrett Thompson’s name and the package’s location. He took the key off the key ring, grabbed the balloons, exited the room, and left the hospital the same way he had entered. Then, Barrett drove to the train station and, using the balloons again to block the camera’s view, went to locker 3249.

After retrieving the package, Barrett returned to his garage, parked the Tahoe, and carried the package home. He put the package in the safe and went to the kitchen for lunch. Nana wanted to know if he needed help selecting the paint color for the Nova. Barrett said she could, but he knew what colors he wanted and that she could help pick shades.

Barrett went to the Y for his extended swimming workout, and when he finished, he saw Natalia and Cheryl talking to their aerobics friends. Barrett walked up behind them, spanked their asses, and hello, Aunties. Then he said Auntie Cheryl, you missed the last session, and poor Auntie Natalia had to take care of me herself. You know, taking care of my hormones is important. So don’t miss tomorrow’s session, or Mom will be pissed and he left.

Cheryl and Natalia were laughing, and their friends were in shock. Then the questions started, and they asked what they did to help with their nephew’s hormones. That was all Barrett heard when he left the building, and he laughed half the way home. When he arrived home, Barrett opened the safe and removed the package. It was the size of a ring binder 1 ½” thick, 12” long, and 9” wide.

When he opened the package, there were 12 compartments, each with a small zip-lock bag filled with diamonds. Each zip lock bag has a different size and shape of diamonds. Barrett said shit, the SVR will be pissed losing all these diamonds. That raised another question: how did Thomas Stanton know to hide it without opening the package? The obvious answer was that he knew diamonds were in the package and was keeping them for himself. That meant double-crossing the SVR and a dangerous move.

Matevy Lebedev had ordered a hit on the courier, and now he was on his way to visit Thomas Stanton in the hospital. Matevy found out Thomas had resigned from the CIA, so he figured Thomas was retiring with his diamonds. Then Matevy found out Thomas was in the hospital because of a car accident, and it was a perfect time to visit. Matevy swore Thomas Stanton would regret stealing from him.

Arriving home, Barrett remembered the business card given him after dinner Sunday night. He pulled it out of his suit pants pocket, and it said Alfonso Lombardi and had a phone number on the front. On the back, it said call me at your earliest convenience. Barrett called, and when he answered, Barrett said Mr. Lomardi, my name is Barrett Thompson, and a man gave me your card to contact you.

Mr. Lombardi said Barrett, you’re a very observant young man. Barrett said it pays to be aware of your surroundings in his work. Mr. Lombardi asked what type of work he does. Barrett said, Mr. Lombardi, we haven’t had our first date, held hands, or kissed. That should come before exchanging personal information. Mr. Lombardi laughed and asked if he could come to his estate for lunch tomorrow at noon. Barrett accepted, and they said goodbye.

Barrett woke up early and went to the warehouse with Zeus and Hera. They practiced the ghost walk on the way, and upon arrival, Barrett did his exercises and martial arts workout. After doing Sensi’s special exercises, he unloaded the rest of the trailer from the auction. First, he stacked the rubber flooring next to the wall, and he’d put it down later. Next, he unloaded and placed the industrial-grade standup air compressor. The last item was the crate with unknown contents. He opened it, filled with bicycles he had no use for, so he would donate them to the Boy and Girl Club.

Leaving the crate on the trailer, Barrett locked the warehouse, and they returned home. After taking a shower, he checked his stocks and the market. Hardin Pharmaceuticals dropped to $121, and USBC Electronics was unchanged at $86.75. Lock Technology was up to $45.10 a share, and Nvidia and Gold were up. Denton Plastics was up to 26.60, and Grove Chemicals was up to 37.10. He had 250k from the sale of Hardin Pharmaceuticals, so Barrett put it into Gold.

Barrett had an idea and called Bob. When he answered, Barrett said he had a theory about the courier mess. So, the original courier was the key to the operation. He was supposed to mail or deliver the extra package, reseal the briefcase, and give it to you. When his flight was delayed, he called the SVR. They dispatched a strike team from Canada to intercept the new courier. Somehow, Thomas Stanton found out about the contents.

If my theory is correct, Thomas Stanton has the extra package, and the SVR knows the briefcase went to him. What do you think they will do now Thomas Stanton no longer works at the CIA? Wouldn’t it be a perfect time to visit Thomas while he’s in the hospital recovering from an auto accident unprotected? They could interrogate and then kill him in a way no one would suspect their involvement.

It’s just a theory, but if it’s right, Thomas will die today or tomorrow at the latest, and it will be on your back, not mine. Barrett laughed and said aren’t you glad you introduced me to the asshole Thomas Stanton and hung up. Poor Bob, now he has to decide whether to help Thomas or not. If he does, who will he send it to the hospital, and how will he explain it?

At breakfast, Barrett told Nana he had an appointment to meet a new dog training customer at noon, so he’d miss lunch. After breakfast, he went to his work garage and removed the Nova’s engine with his hoist. It wasn’t difficult because the engine had just been installed, and nothing else had been done. Then he removed the transmission and stopped to prepare for his lunch appointment.

Barrett took the Hummer to his lunch meeting with Alfonso Lombardi and brought Zeus and Hera with him. When he arrived at the gate, the guard asked his name and opened it. The door opened when they parked in front of the house, and a German Shepherd puppy ran out. Mr. Lombardi yelled at Maximo but ignored his owner and wanted to greet the guests. Barrett, Zeus, and Hera got out and greeted Maximo.

Introductions were made, and Mr. Lombardi said Renzo, the guard at the gate, said he had to see your Hummer. Barrett told Mr. Lombardo it was the first vehicle he had restored, and he converted it to an electric vehicle using a Tesla motor and transmission with gas generator backup. It has a solar panel on the roof, so you don’t have to depend on plugging it in to recharge.

Mr. Lombardi said it looked great and asked about the dogs he had brought. Barrett said this is Zeus and Hera and told them to say hello to Mr. Lombardi. They barked, and he laughed and asked who had trained them. Barrett told him he did and had been training dogs since he was 8. They went through the house to the patio and sat at a table. Mr. Lomardi said your parents are obviously wealthy, so why do you train dogs.

Barrett said his parents were dead, and his grandmother raised him. She’s wealthy but only supplies the necessities. His grandparents gave her kids trust funds, and all they learned was to spend money. So with me, she said, if you want something, figure out how to pay for it. So he started walking dogs at six and never asked for a dime. Dog training gave him seed money to open a stock trading account with his grandmother’s help, and he has done fairly well. Restoring motorcycles and vehicles is a hobby that pays for itself.

Mr. Lombardi said shit, and here he thought you were living off your parent’s money. Then he asked how he knew there were FBI agents in Alfredo’s Italian Restaurant. Barrett said okay, but it’s the last question unless you have a daughter to ply my answers, and they laughed. Barrett said he’s perceptive, and it’s saved him from taking on bad clients and avoiding bad situations.

Sunday night, he noticed the man by the kitchen first. He watched you, the waiter, and the busboy and barely ate or drank. The waiter and busboy constantly watched you and the man by the kitchen instead of paying attention to their customers and duties. Barrett said if you remember your previous visits to Alferdo’s, how would you rate your service Sunday night.

Mr. Lombardi said you’re right. Normally, the waiter checks in occasionally and then leaves alone. Sunday night, the waiter was always around our table. Barrett told Mr. Lombardi that’s because they couldn’t set up bugs and a listening area in the restaurant. Then Barrett said enough business. How would you like to see what Maximo is capable of learning?

When Mr. Lombardi said yes, Barrett told Zeus and Hera to search. Then he told Maximo to follow them, and the dogs took off. Barrett told Mr. Lombardi that the dogs would bark and contain the intruder if anyone was in the backyard. A few minutes later, the dogs barked, and they went to see who was there. When they arrived at the dog’s location, they saw a man holding a parabolic mic and recorder. Barrett told the man to put his equipment down and strip quickly, or the dogs would attack.

The man started to comply, so Barrett got out of his cell phone and started recording. He asked the man his name and who his employer was. The man said he was FBI Special Agent Randy Spears. Barrett asked if he had a warrant, and Agent Spears said no. Once Randy was nude, Barrett told Zeus and Hera to search the area, and they took off with Maximo following.

Barrett told Randy to put his underwear on but nothing else. The dogs returned with a duffle bag and set it at his feet. Then Barrett told Randy to run and climb over the fence because the dogs wanted his balls for lunch. Randy turned and ran, and then Barrett told Zeus and Hera to attack. The dogs got a few pieces of Randy climbing over the fence and then returned to them.
