Chapter 4

It was almost 3 weeks to the day from the death of Captain Jack that Peg called. Both Becky and Ginger had been found dead in their bed that morning. They had not come down for breakfast and JJ had gone up to check on them. They were in bed in each other’s arms. JJ said they were smiling. They died like they had done everything else in life, together.

I explained to Peg that the same day Captain Jack had made his will and told me what he wanted done at his funeral, both grandmas were with him. They also had made out their wills and gave me instructions about their funerals. I assured her that there were no surprises in either of their wills. Everything that they had, went to the trust, but there were some things that they wanted done at the cemetery that were ‘odd’. I explained it to her. She laughed so hard she dropped the phone but said she would take care of it.

Andy made another trip to Memphis, and we met him at the airport. There were lots of hugs and kisses. People were staring. I mean what a sight we made! Two chunky girls kissing and crying over a short chunky guy.

In the car I told Andy about what was going to happen at the cemetery and he also laughed. I wondered if it was even legal.

“Who is going to complain? His grandson is the county sheriff whose wife is the district attorney. Captain Jack was one of the most powerful men in the state and his family owns the largest single tract of land in the state. There will be no outcry only tears and laughter, just do it like they requested.”

Again, the church was packed. There were eulogies about their lives, then the trip out to the cemetery at the O’Shea farm. At the gravesite everyone noticed that there was a big hole. Not only was there a grave dug on each side of Captain Jack but his grave was opened as well! His casket was fully visible. When the caskets of Ginger and Becky were lowered, they sat up against the casket of Captain Jack, Becky on his left and Ginger on his right. Just the way they had slept for all their years together. Now they would rest for all eternity the same way. As the priest explained it to the public there was not a dry eye to be seen.

Again, we went to the house to eat. This time Jade had insisted that I take her. She cried during the Mass and at the gravesite but got herself together at the house. We left after about an hour with Andy driving my car. Jade riding in the front seat next to Andy with me sitting by the window. It was crowded.

At home Andy said he needed to talk to us. Oh shit! What could this be about?

“My mother is getting worse by the day. I am looking for a home to put her in for her own wellbeing. I want to talk to Patrick or Liam O’Sullivan about putting her in their rest home in Memphis?”
