The rope-fenced corridor stretched ahead like the spine of some industrial beast, tight mesh walls keeping them trapped on the path while revealing the entire hell-course beyond. Platforms, spinning machinery, shifting floors, and various choosable paths, all of it looming like a promise and a threat.

But first, the entrance itself was also an obstacle.

A slab of reinforced steel, easily a meter thick, sealed the way forward.

“Well,” Zara thought, “that looks heavy.”

“I’ll do it,” Akemi said, trying to sound calmer than she felt.

Keller floated forward. “Everyone, quiet. Let her concentrate. Try not to mentally scream about how close your face is to the ass in front of you.”

A burst of collective embarrassed thoughts followed.

“That was not silence,” Keller sighed.

Akemi inhaled slowly.

She raised her hands.

The air around the steel gate warped. The metal vibrated. Dust shook loose from seams that had probably never moved manually before. Their shared mind pulsed with Akemi’s concentration, focus sharpened like a blade. Her brain wasn’t just thinking; it was bracing.

“Holy crap,” Pixie whispered in pure awe.

The door groaned. The kind of sound metal makes when it hates being alive.

“Just a bit more.” Akemi gritted her teeth.

Her arms trembled. Sweat rolled down her temple. The colossal slab shuddered upward, millimeter by agonizing millimeter. The mental network was filled with tension, strain, and Akemi’s stubborn refusal to fail.

Then ... it locked open.

The path ahead revealed itself.

Akemi collapsed slightly, only held up by the bodies behind her.

“You okay?” Zara asked.

“Fine ... fine,” Akemi sighed. “Let’s keep moving before my brain files a complaint.”

Pixie mentally applauded like she was at a concert.

They crawled upward onto a raised walkway that angled higher into the course, the world opening up around them like a twisted playground.

Then they reached a gap.

A canyon of open air yawned beneath them, separating one platform from the next. No stairs. No planks. Just a fall and the taunting continuation of the obstacle course on the other side.

“Fuck,” Zara cursed. “Can you make a bridge made of pure kinetic energy, Aki?”

“Not without melting half of my brain,” she shook her head.

“Oh!” Bambi gasped cheerfully. “It’s Bambi time then!”

She extended her hands. Her fingernails glistened, then began to bleed gold.

Liquid, molten-looking, shimmering gold poured from her fingertips in smooth ribbons. It didn’t drip chaotically; it obeyed her, flowing outward like a living tentacle weaving itself into structure.

A bridge began to form.

Wide enough for their wriggling snake of bodies. Thick enough to hold Welcome’s ridiculous mass.

The corridor framing them glowed with reflected gold light, turning the moment almost surreal. The chain of girls crawled forward slowly as the bridge extended under them, Bambi kneading strength and form into every shimmering arc.

“That’s ... insanely pretty,” Hristina admitted.

“And insanely useful,” Akemi added.

“Also,” Irish said, “this is the most luxurious humiliation I’ve ever been part of.”

Bambi laughed softly. “Hold on. Just a bit more.”

The bridge finished sealing itself to the far platform.

Solid. Strong. Glorious.

“Okay,” Bambi exhaled. “Go.”

The examinees crawled forward. Golden light beneath. Rope fences beside. The massive machinery of the course rumbling like a beast waking up around them.

Behind them, the bridge began to crack.

“Uhhh...” Zara thought carefully. “Was it supposed to do that?”

“It’s just temporary,” Bambi said. “It’s supposed to collapse after we’re off.”

“Faster faster faster faster faster!” Pixie chanted happily as they rushed to the other side.

A few seconds later, the golden bridge dissolved into glittering fragments and rained into the chasm below like falling starlight.

They lay there for a moment, breathing.

Then Zara laughed.

“Okay,” she said. “That was badass.”

“Thanks,” Bambi smiled through the mental network, warmth flickering through all their linked minds.

“Oh, my God!” David exclaimed as a very naked Aritimi appeared in the middle of the room.

“Wha ... what the fuck is going on?” Aritimi stammered. Her mouth was the only part she could control, slightly.

“At last. It took so long, I thought she wouldn’t come here. She must have a strong will,” Ethan said, adjusting his glasses, “but she will be dominated as well. Sheer willpower is not enough here.”

Aritimi looked around. She saw a bunch of people she didn’t know, and then she noticed the tables aligned around the hole in the ground, connected to some kind of plant thing. Each of the tendril was connected to a table, or more accurately, the people on it.

She recognized everyone who was strapped into those tables, including her own niece, Clara.

“Hm, where is the other one?” Rina looked at the disappearing portal.

“What are you talking about?” Robin asked.

“Curtis. The daughter of this Argento chick we caught in the morning,” Rina clarified. “She is one of Aritimi’s pupils.”

Ethan glared at the still trembling Aritimi, “Why did you come alone? Where is Curtis?”

“She is on the exam with my other pupils,” Aritimi replied, even though she didn’t want to answer at all.

“I can’t feel her in the system at all,” a monstrous voice rumbled. It was difficult to determine its origin.

“What?” Ethan arched a brow and then looked back at the huntress. “What do you know about that?”

“Mmm, maybe the Link Liana I used to fuse them into one body and mind has a hand in that,” Aritimi answered against her will.

“Fuck!” Robin cursed, “A Link Liana can create a whole system of shared minds. We can’t snatch Curtis out of that system.”

“What kind of system are you talking about?” Aritimi asked, “How did you manage to control me? It feels super strong. I can’t imagine something relatively weak like the Link Liana would be enough against it.”

“Oh, let me answer this question,” the unknown voice continued.

The examinees crawled onward, and the next platform revealed itself.

A massive rectangular stretch, maybe fifty meters long, and lined on both sides with dozens of mounted cannons.

Every one of them pointed straight at the path.

One fired.

A sizzling paint round slammed into the ground beside them, splattering neon across the floor. The impact trembled through the metal.

“Those are paintballs?” Irish thought weakly.

Another shot blasted the fence near her head.

“Oh,” Pixie joined. “Mean paintballs.”

Before anyone could suggest anything reckless, all of them looked forward.

At the far end of the platform was a sealed door.

No path splits. No cover.

Beside the door: multiple levers.

“Oh COME ON,” Akemi groaned.

Curtis braced, teeth bristling along her body, thinking. “Okay. I can tank some, but not all. But this must be my obstacle, so there must be a way I can solve this.”

“Wait.” Zara’s thoughts cut sharper than the rest.

Instinct. Always instinct.

“This isn’t Curtis’ challenge.”

They felt her realization ripple through the link.

“This isn’t just a ‘who can survive their own obstacle’ type of exam. It’s also a team course. Some sections, just like some missions, are meant to require combinations, not solo heroics.”

Silence. Then the examinees agreed.

“Yeah,” Dayanara said. “We don’t do this alone.”

Pixie’s joy lit the mental space. “TEAM POWER!”

They began forming a plan.

Barely five minutes later.

The cannons roared to life as the examinees approached.

“MOVE!” Zara shouted.

They surged forward as one grotesque chain of determination and perversion.

Paintballs rained down like colorful bullets.

Akemi focused, and a translucent kinetic barrier snapped into existence in front of her, humming like a living dome. Bambi’s gold flowed over it like molten armor, plating the shield in a gleaming layer of extra protection.

Shots slammed into it. It held.

Curtis’ teeth-armored body hardened further, spikes knurling, plates thickening. Every impact cracked against razor enamel.

Dayanara’s hair began to work, exploding outward in a scarlet storm. It covered herself, Esmeralda, Freya, and Gaylor, weaving into a living shield of writhing crimson cables.

Behind them, Jacintha began spawning clones.

One after another. After another. After another.

They shattered under impacts the instant they appeared, dissolving into flaring bursts of flesh, but they blocked every shot aimed at Irish, Keller, and the Lexisters.

Minerva and Niko’s section became a flurry of paper blades. Niko’s planes buzzed into a tight orbiting swarm, intercepting paintballs mid-flight. Minerva coordinated angles with frightening precision.

Olympia crystallized with a gleaming crunch, diamond-hard armor forming across her body. She bulldozed forward like a moving fortress.

Quincy summoned monstrous limbs, huge, grotesque arms shielding herself, Pixie, and Rexine. Rexine braced her generated spears behind them, stabbing into shots that got too close, redirecting them away.

Behind them, light and shadow pulsed as the conjoined twins synchronized their abilities.

Flashes of blinding radiance disintegrated incoming shots. Ribbons of darkness swallowed others whole.

They protected not just themselves, but also Skeletina, Undine, and Valeria.

Welcome’s massive frame was protected by an enchanted barrier.

Xipil and Xan began chanting mentally as hard as they could, even without mouths free for incantation. The air shimmered with magic, not perfect, not full-power, but enough to protect Welcome, the Byrne triplets, and Zara.

Paint blitzed the examinees. Every defense strained.

They kept crawling.

Kept pushing.

Kept going.

And somehow, they reached the door.

Akemi extended her power again, mentally syncing with the link to time everything. Multiple levers slammed down at once under invisible force.

The steel gate unlocked.

The firing stopped.

Their hearts pounded together in psychic sync.

Then laughter bubbled through the network. Exhausted. Triumphant. Alive.

“That,” Zara thought, “was awful.”

“But we did it,” Pixie beamed. “TEAM!”

“Never doing that again,” Akemi wheezed.

They crawled onward.

David’s eyes almost fell out of their sockets as he ogled Aritimi’s bouncing breasts.
