The night was calm. Quiet.
Too quiet.
Earl rarely bothered with the Island of Beginnings anymore. The first phase of a cycle was always predictable. Fresh arrivals, confused and desperate, with no idea how this world worked.
Some were scooped up quickly, taken in by veterans looking for new hands to mold.
Others were claimed, dragged off into the dark before they had a chance to understand what was happening.
Lately, the latter had become more common.
His lips pressed into a thin line.
Why was he even here?
None of them had been worth it in so long.
Most were too weak, too simple, too dull.
Too boring.
He exhaled, slow and controlled, rolling his shoulders as he surveyed the empty beach.
So why had he come to the Island of Beginnings when nothing had entertained him here in so long?
The answer was simple—he was bored. Six cycles ago, breaking the glass had been a grand goal. But now, after he accomplished it.
He exhaled, slow and controlled, letting his gaze flick across the coastline. How long has it been? Time blurred in this place, but he had lived through all thirteen cycles—one of the first, one of the few who had lasted this long.
Lasted.
The word made his smile sharpen.
Survived.
Yes, that was better. Because death was mercy compared to what this world could do to you.
Fail here? Give in?
You didn’t just die.
But those who rose to the top—who understood how the game was played? For them, this place was paradise.
So long as you knew where you belonged.
And yet, even paradise dulls after a time.
The usual games had grown stale. The standard pleasures, distractions, amusements—all of them had long since lost their appeal. The players here were all predictable, their struggles boring, their inevitable failures uninspired.
How long had it been since he had something to look forward to? A toy worth playing with.
Then he heard it.
A gasp, ragged and desperate. His gaze flicked toward the shoreline, his interest barely piqued. It wasn’t on the standard beach, the usual place but echoed from something ... far removed.
Familiar...
“The hidden cave.” he realized. A small, out of place thing. Recently discovered even after all this time.
He moved forward, pulse quickening. Excitement?
He was surprised at this feeling. Something long absent and just from a simple cry? But there was something in that voice, some call that was rather ... natural.
