MEL
Robyn came over seconds after I got home from work on Wednesday. She had a serious look on her face, and I thought her visit was a follow-up in some way to the conversation she’d had with Dave the previous Friday. I felt well-informed by him.
Robyn said, “Hi, Mel. I’m here to ask a favor.”
“Come in and how can I help. Dave told me about your talk. I’m as ready as he is to help you iron things out.”
She nodded in understanding. “I’m trying to be a friend to Toni ... and a more forgiving and happier wife for Stone. I took Toni to lunch last Sunday and shared what I knew about your group. We did coffee again this morning. She knows no one in this area except us and a few people at work she just met. Dave had invited me to Friday’s gathering at your house, and I’d like to bring Toni. Is that alright?”
“Yes, absolutely. I’m interested to meet this ‘femme fatale’ that you worry about.”
“I’m better than I was but still working the problem. Your husband was so wonderful the way he talked to me and gave me other viewpoints. If it was only easy to adopt them instead of just talking about them. Are you two aligned on this stuff?”
I spoke, “I think so. We think each other’s interactions with others, even members of the opposite sex, is to be applauded. Since we started that line of thinking, the number of friends I have has gone up by a large factor. I like to see him interacting with them, too; even sexually.”
Robyn’s eyes got large. “He didn’t say he did THAT! O. M. G. I thought everything was just social and marginally romantic.”
“I do the same thing, Robyn. I love multiple men, and am more than happy to play whatever games they want – even when sex is involved. Matter of fact, I should probably say, especially when sex is involved. I am a woman that is horny and sexually needy ALL the time. Dave helps me scratch that itch, but so do some other men.”
“Does that involve some of the men I met? Cindy had told me that things got risqué after about nine at night at your parties. That’s why Stone and I left early last Friday. I was coping with so much; I didn’t need more trouble with Stone.”
I volunteered, “The women and men in our group are very close to each other, including in romantic and erotic ways. So, yes, I have been intimate with each of the men that you met, except Stone, of course. Dave has been with each of the women, too. We are a loving and caring group.”
“Oh, wow. Should I tell Toni? Should I even bring her?”
“That’ll be up to you. We will be good hosts and we’re not trying to convert you or hit on you or anything like that. Just so you know, the previous owners of your house were vicious to us after they discovered our behavior at our parties. I may never be able to talk to my parents again because of what they did and said to them basically exposing us in a very unkind manner.”
Robyn said, “I would never say anything like that about anybody. I’m not a gossip. As far as Toni, what would you do?”
“If you want, bring her for cocktails and dinner, and leave before that nine o’clock hour. Go have your own party. Maybe this is the opportunity to open the discussion with her about intimacy with Stone, or the other way around. Just keep your cool. You don’t need to drive to closure, but you might want to admit how you’re feeling and get them to share part of the burden of coming up with a workable solution. You may tell them that we’ve talked and we’ve given you some things to think about.”
Robyn hugged me and then scurried back to her house.
DAVE
I set up a lunch with Stone for Wednesday. I drove out near his office, picked him up, and we went to an offshoot of a place we frequented. I was being friendly but he sized me up.
“Robyn said that she talked to you on Friday night. She thinks I’m about to have an affair with my assistant. I know she’s worried, but there’s no need for her to feel that way.
“Toni is the best sidekick that a guy could ever find. I lucked out in hiring her about three years ago with my previous company. I made taking this new job conditional on her being my assistant here in Florida. She’s a good part of why I was so successful before and I didn’t want to break my winning streak by losing her to take this new post.
“Robyn is pissed off because I brought her with me. Toni and I are close, but there is nothing sexual between us. Nothing! We are a great work team that knows how to get results. She knows that I love her, but that is what I call professional love. She may be the smartest woman I know.”
I shrugged, “Well, I hope that things smooth out for all of you. I suggested that she befriend Toni and learn more about her. Right now, she seems to be a femme fatale that she doesn’t know much about. I’d like to meet her sometime.”
“Ah, Robyn took Toni to lunch on Sunday, and I think they’re having coffee as we speak. She is trying to learn about her, and I hope they’re becoming friends. She’ll see that Toni has no ulterior motive. She’s not out to replace Robyn – who I love dearly, by the way.”
I smirked, “Tell her more frequently than you have been.”
We went on to other topics, and did build that bridge of friendship and trust. Stone knew I was looking out for the best interests of all of them.
Mel told me about inviting Toni to our Friday party that evening. I chuckled. This would be interesting.
Stone, Robyn, and Toni arrived at six o’clock Friday evening. He’d left work early. He and Robyn had a pretty woman with them that I immediately guessed was the mysterious and illusive Toni. She was a shapely brunette, mid-thirties, and certainly the type of person you’d like to get marooned with on a desert island.
Several of us went into the pool to swim even as the food for dinner got set out on the tables. Toni in a bikini was a major factor in the way the planets rotated around the sun. I managed to not act like an asshole and gawk at a hot body, but it was an effort. Even though half of the other women were in monokinis, Toni and Robyn both kept their bras on.
I joined them in getting a wine for dinner, and then we sat more or less together. I asked Stone how the new job was going. He went on about how they were running a three-month trial of his segmentation scheme on a subset of customers. There was no data yet, but when Toni had analyzed the past three years of data from the selected customer accounts, they were sure there’d be an improvement in profitability with the new process.
I asked Toni, “So, you’re analytic?”
She blushed, “Yes. I’ve taken graduate courses in statistics and business analytics. I liked math in high school, so I wasn’t too scared of the challenge they posed. Those turned out to be just what we needed to get a handle on breaking apart the large amorphous number of customers into new service segments.”
I knew a little about math and probed. She lit up and gave me a deeper dive into what they were doing for their one-hundred customer test. Fundamentally, the large multi-location, multi-terminal customers were going to be seeing a service technician a couple of times a week at every location. Single point-of-sale customers would only get serviced based on trouble calls or when a technician’s schedule allowed a check-up visit.
Stone jumped in, with some of the other ideas they were also trying. He credited Toni with many of them. As he continued, I could feel the enthusiasm he had for his new post. I also noticed that Toni hung on every word, not so much to correct any error as to soak up the wisdom coming from her guru’s mouth.
I teased Toni, “Am I detecting some hero worship in you as Stone speaks?”
Toni blushed, “Yeah, I think we have a mutual admiration society going on between us. He’s the best boss a girl like me could have.”
I chuckled, “And what is a ‘girl like you’?”
Toni smiled, “I can be moody and petulant, and he just has a knack of bringing me around and getting me grounded again.”
“And, you’re the office wife?” I teased, mindful of Robyn’s issues.
“Yeah. I deal with his little foibles, too. We just seem to work well together and cancel all that negative stuff out for each other.”
“Any love interests in your life?” I asked bluntly. I wanted to see how she’d respond.
Toni shook her head. “I gave up on those a few years ago. I’m not a hang around in bars girl or one to worry the latest guy to ‘swipe right on my Internet profile’. Besides, I have the best guy in the world with me eight hours a day.”
I posed to her, “Stone?”
“Yeah. I love him. It’ll break my heart if we ever have to part ways.”
Stone injected, “And, I love Toni, too.” There was the gateway that I’d been hoping for to get everyone talking, although I hadn’t expected Toni to be present.
I turned to Robyn who’d been paying rapt attention, “How’re you handling all this love floating around?”
Robyn saw the opening and sighed. “I’m feeling left out and unloved in a serious way. I don’t get him eight or nine hours a day.” She turned to Toni, “I don’t begrudge you your feelings for my husband, but I am concerned about all our boundaries and whether they’re in the right place. Honestly, I’m worried about boundary crossing, too.”
Toni sat up straight and said in a very serious tone, “I’m so sorry Robyn. I have no intention of taking Stone from you. I do love him, but I think I’ve been pretty circumspect about my feelings until just now. He’s hearing this in a serious way from me for the first time. I’m not sure I understand about of your boundary remark though.”
