Over the next two years, TNA doubled in size. The stock continued to go up, except for some jitters here and there with the rest of the market. Even in one of the big tech and energy dips, the price only went down about seven percent. It was one of the first to rebound.
TNA was a diverse, non-fossil and non-nuclear, electric generation company. Our sectors revolved around the type of technology in use – solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower, biomass, tidal and wave. We were a source for each of those, even on a micro scale, such as for a single home or small community ‘off the grid’.
As we got competent managers in each of those sectors, we went around the country and even the world like a vacuum cleaned, buying up some of the promising ventures in each of our sectors. Doing that, we could create a critical mass that could deliver faster, cheaper, and more reliably than many others.
Kim and I almost managed ourselves out of our jobs. Kim was highly sought after on the speaking circuit, and did well at it. She was on Dateline and 60 Minutes about a year apart. She accounted for many magazine articles, too. I was very proud of my wife.
Several of the articles picked out that she was fully jet rated and ‘flew her own jet’ to important meetings, client and site visits, and to testify before Congress. After a while, Sheila stopped going on our flights with us. She said that as far as she was concerned we no longer needed the training wheels that she provided us from the jump seat. Sheila did, however, remain in TNA’s employ as our chief pilot since the jet often got used for business trips rather than our private hops to spend time with the Circle.
We did routinely go back to Orlando for quarterly recurrent training. Each time, we asked that we get challenged with tougher and tougher flight problems and emergencies. If something did happen, we wanted to be ready for it. Fortunately, we’ve never had any problems with the plane.
The runway extension at Camp Forge eventually did take place. Kim donated fifty acres to the town, and the extension got built according to FAA specs. With that gateway opened up, we also added a paved path from Acre Woods to the airport, without having to go out on public roads. We got several golf carts to go back and forth in the good weather.
Debbie took over N8248G – my Cessna Cardinal 177RG for a while. She was as nuts about flying as Kim and I were, and she often opted to make the flights in the smaller plane rather than accompany us in the jet.
Debbie did continue to study under Mark Hanson for her Commercial rating. That required her to have a deeper understanding of all the areas of flying that she’d studied for the private pilot’s license, and be more proficient and precise in her flying. It took her a year to complete that rating, and then she started working on completing her instructor’s rating.
Mark did get his airline job – in Philadelphia, only an hour or so drive from Camp Forge. I say ‘airline’, but Mark thought it was even more exciting. He went to work or UPS – United Parcel Service. They had a big hub in at Philadelphia International. They started him off flying the 757-200 model, outfitted, of course, for cargo.
After going through an extensive flight training to get upgraded to the 757, he started making routine flights at all times of the day and night from PHL to Louisville – UPS’s primary hub. He was the first officer to start with, but looked forward to becoming captain. He did get to go on one flight to Cologne, which really excited him.
While Debbie and Mark became an ‘item’, she remained exceptionally close to Kim, Vanessa, and me. The routine seemed to be that if he wasn’t flying, she’d be overnight with him, else with us. In Chapel Hill, of course, she was always in our bed. Vanessa stayed mainly in Camp Forge and was in our bed every night.
Vanessa’s restaurant became a sensation. The place was booked out weeks ahead, and reservations were even sold online at sites like Craigslist and Facebook for premium prices. She just kept delivering outstanding meals, and always made sure that the Circle got to share in her cuisine.
Vanessa’s Cookbook, that she self-published and put on Amazon became such a hit, that Morris Press, the top cookbook publisher in the nation, contacted her about a contract. Todd and Van talked, and she went with them to her delight and even further success.
Todd found his calling running Vanessa’s. The place challenged him and he loved the job he’d taken as business manager. He and Van were sympatico in about everything they did, and his skills flourished in making the place a success. The place was such a success that the two of them had started talking about opening up second site, probably in the upscale part of downtown Philly. He has Heather starting to search for places that would be good in that regard. Trish still consults about their marketing approaches.
Vanessa got the kitchen part of the restaurant and her sous chefs working well enough that we cajoled her into coming with us to Chapel Hill one week, and then to Maine for another long weekend. Somehow, the restaurant miraculously survived without her.
The project to add ten bedrooms to the third-floor bedroom wing of the house was completed in mid-summer. One of the first occupants there was Mark. He admitted that he had struggled mentally and moralistically with the ethos of the Circle, especially the open relationships and the open sex.
Debbie had worked constantly with him to help him reconceive the landscape for a relationship, particularly one within a group of loving people. Vanessa also helped him sharing with him her own journey into the Circle and her perspective on the various relationships that she created in her new life.
As that spring turned into summer, Kim and I did use the jet fly up to my place in Rangeley, Maine. Each trip we bought at least another couple, and sometime as many as six others in the Challenger 350. The runways were long enough with even overruns on the more usual runway that we could squeak the jet in there.
Having succeeded in making the place in Maine a destination point, we found we were up there at least one long weekend a month. The best time was when the foliage started to turn towards the end of September. The panoply of colors across the western mountains was always a treat.
Even in the wintertime, we were able to get the jet into the Maine airport, although the facilities there were minimal – no fuel, no FBO, no glycol, and so on. We stayed a week after Christmas. We did get a good sunny day on our planned departure day, and that enabled us to wipe down and dry the fuselage, wings, and elevators of frost and snow. We departed with no problem, and did stop in Portland to refuel for the rest of our trip south to Camp Forge and then Chapel Hill.
Ally Cox finished her Ph.D. in computer science, focused on A.I. She immediately accepted a teaching position in the computer science department at the University of Delaware. The commute was a bit of a chore for her, but she didn’t have to be there every day. She also immediately started to seek some research grants and was successful. That let her start to develop a covey of students interested in a deeper dive into key elements of A.I.
Darren’s club flourished. Over that summer, he invested in a face lift of the interior of the club with successful results in terms of repeat customers and even ‘Club Members’. Everyone in the Circle because automatic club members, and that became a favorite night spot for us to go about one night a month.
The raunchy girls-night-out that had originally endeared us to The Club was duplicated in various ways on each visit. Somehow, it became the ‘go-to’ spot for bachelor and bachelorette parties. Darren loved to have both kinds on the same night, and went out of his way to place them at adjacent seating areas with an eye on what would happen next.
The renovated Club did have a more comfortable VIP lounge that he had created in the building. The VIP area was also relatively private and even had romantic little nooks and niches scattered throughout that couples could use advantageously for romantic and even sexual encounters.
