I was up early and puttering around the kitchen. Based on what I’d seen the night before, I wasn’t surprised when Karolann and Todd were the first to appear even though the pair weren’t married to each other. I even got a kiss from my daughter, a rare treat.
Debbie appeared next; except she was in office dress. She announced, “I’m going to run into the office for the morning and make sure the news about the IPO is getting out to everyone there and to the right outsiders. I bet that Marsha, that PR person, is tearing her hair out. I’ll give her a hand. Late afternoon, I have a flight lesson and the weather looks good.”
Kim appeared dressed for work with the same destination for three or four hours. She said, “I’ve got about a hundred phone calls to make.” I got a kiss and the two of them were out the door.
Todd said, “The IPO is a big deal, right? If your price holds in the market, that means the ... and I quote, The ‘worthless stock’ you gave us just became worth $40,000. Wow. I mean thank you. How are you feeling about that?”
I replied, “It is the biggest deal that I’ve ever been a part of. It’s like a birth. It means that a small company that has been gestating for a few years finally got enough growth under its belt to join the big boys. It’s like turning eighteen and becoming an adult, or twenty-one and being able to drink. It’s a major rite of passage, in this case for a small corporation that is destined to grow.”
Shortly, Scott appeared, and only a minute later, so did Marcy. Everyone looked relaxed and happy. Marcy had a just-fucked glow about her. I invited comments on anything from the day before, but there were no remarks other than the reminder that I needed to communicate more frequently and honestly about ‘the woman I liked’.
With a little help, I made omelets for each person, adding in various veggies or meet to personal taste. Scott helped by preparing bacon to go with some of the eggs. Coffee and juice got served, too. We took our time. I was thinking about how to bring up what I saw the night before, or even whether to say anything. I decided in the new spirit of open communications that I had to say something by way of acknowledgement.
As the last of breakfast disappeared, I was at the head of the table looking at the couples on either side with smiles and appreciation. So that Kim and Debbie could appreciate the discussion, I also turned on the voice recorder on my cellphone and tucked it in my shirt pocket making sure the microphone was well positioned.
A minute later, I used my finger to dance between Scott and Marcy. I teased, “You like sleeping together?” I then made the same gesture for Karolann and Todd at the farther end of the table. Of course, they weren’t married to each other as I well knew, since I gave each of them away to their grooms at the time not long before. They each had fair-sized weddings.
The four of them looked horrified and then guilty as sin. I thought Marcy was going to barf. She turned green in panic and even held her gut with both hands. I was sure everyone’s blood pressure and pulse had just gone through the roof, except my own. I was almost chuckling knowing the impact my question had.
They each looked responsible for a capital crime. There were conspiratorial looks of worry and seeking guidance all around the table, but not from me. I sat patiently and waited for a reply. I thought of the sales adage, ‘He who talks first, loses.’ I could see the two young men make nearly imperceptible withdrawals from the table, meaning that neither of them planned to respond. I was the girls’ father and the reply had to come from one or both of them.
Karolann reluctantly sighed and speculated, “You saw us pairing up last night?”
I nodded and smiled so they wouldn’t think I was angry at them. “Yes. I had a bunch of emotions – shock at first, then concern, and even curiosity and then arousal. I assume you’ve thought out the various arcs your relationships could go as you trade spouses. If you haven’t, I volunteer to work through some of that with you. I promise not to be judgmental. It’s just that I’ve lived on that landscape of spouse sharing much of my life.”
There was silence.
Marcy’s eyes enlarged and her head tilted as she took in what I’d just said. She asked in a very timid voice, “You mean you’ve done what we are doing or something like it?”
I nodded, “Yes, with Kim and back aways with your mother.”
The two girls said in unison, “WITH MOM?” Their voices rose a full octave together over those two words.
I chuckled, “Children like to think of their parents as asexual saints, which they are not – I assure you. You’re old enough to appreciate that your mother and I had a robust sex life throughout our engagement and most of marriage. Some of that time involved other people – individuals, couples, and groups, even. Just so you know, we never cheated on each other.”
“You were swingers?” Kar asked.
“For a while. Mostly, it was more than that.”
“You’ve annexed Debbie into your relationship with Kim,” Marcy stated assertively. That fact was already obvious.
I nodded, “There are others we are in a relationship with – not nearby, however. As Mindy and I did, Kim and I have learned that we don’t have a monopoly on love. We can love multiple people simultaneously, and we do.”
Kar looked at her cohorts, “We are in love with each other, too. We think our marriages are strong - stronger even; at least I do. You’ll ask, so I’ll tell you that we’ve been doing this since before Scott and I got married – so over three years.”
Marcy asked me, “Who else are you, Kim, and Debbie involved with? Where are they, if they’re not here?”
“There are six people up in Camp Forge, Pennsylvania, that we share ourselves with – three men and three women. We all have very open relationships – open marriages, if you will. There are, as you might expect, interesting twists and turns about all of it.”
“Such as?” Kar asked.
“Let’s see, where do I start. One woman, June, who’s married to Jim, is Kim’s half-sister. One woman works during the week in Boston, that’s Trish who’s married to Bob; however, she needed a companion in Massachusetts, so established a relationship with Doug.
“Doug is married to Karyn, however, during the week, when he’s with Trish, she has a relationship with Carl, who teaches at Harvard. Carl is from Burlington, Vermont, and is also married to Joan. She, however, has a relation while he’s away at the college with Ben. There been some mixing and playing together at various points along that chain.”
Marcy asked, “And they interact?”
“Yes, and I assume you mean sexually. There’s some sapphic loving between the women, but the men usually don’t interact together sexually. The Camp Forge group have two houses next door to each other. Kim and I are up there as often as we can.”
“Do Kim and Debbie interact?”
I nodded and laughed, “They do, but don’t worry, neither of them will jump your bones.”
They at least smiled at my humor. It was the first sign of relaxation since I’d put them on the spot.
Marcy said, “You’re not going to tell us to stop?”
