Kim and I were in early again. The lone security guard for the building greeted us as we went into the interior office area. What we found surprised us.
Debbie was asleep hunched over the conference table in the War Room. Around her were the various papers she was reformatting as well as the keyboard and display for one of the workstations. The display had gone to sleep from lack of use.
I whispered to Kim, “I think she tried to work overnight.”
“Fuck. She shouldn’t have to do that.”
“What do we do?”
“You go and kiss her awake. Hold her. She’ll be disoriented at first.”
I did just that. I got close to our sleeping princess and gently rubbed her shoulder as I nuzzled in near her cheek and started kissing her cheek and then her lips.
Debbie groaned slightly and said, “Please don’t stop.” She took hold of one of my hands as she sat up, but still with her eyes closed. She put my hand down the front of her blouse and directly on her bare breast. “Mmmmmm, you can wake me up like this any time.’
I kissed her on the lips. “Did you work all night?”
“Yes, and don’t tell me I shouldn’t have done that. I wanted to do that – for you and Kim. I want to make good things happen for you ... I care a lot about both of you.”
I massaged her breast, bringing the nipple to an erect state as I looked into Deb’s sleepy eyes as they came open. She was loving every second of what I was doing. After a minute or so, I extracted my hand, kissed her, and suggested that she might like to get ‘office appropriate’ or even go home for a nap and change of clothes.
Debbie said, “I have what I need in my purse or my desk drawer. Thank you for this.” We kissed one more time and then I went to my ‘temp’ office. I was aware of both Kim and Debbie moving back and forth in the hallways outside my open office.
About nine a.m., I saw Grace Lighter, the company’s HR head, go into Kim’s office, and about ten minutes after that Paul Tocket went in. The three of them talked for nearly an hour. I then saw Margo Sterling go into the room to meet with the three of them. I think I also heard a little scream of joy filter through Kim’s door into the hallway.
By ten-thirty, TransEnergy NA has a new COO, and the empty slot of the named individual had been filled by an up-and-coming woman. Kim moved fast. When you own the company, you can do that.
Debbie came and got me a few minutes later. I strolled in, and Grace was still there. The two women smiled up at me. Debbie came in behind me and shut the door; she had a most mischievous look on her face. Kim gestured to the empty chairs and we sat.
Kim said, “Mr. Ronald Hume, you have made yourself an invaluable member of the TNA team, even though you are an outside consultant. Accordingly, I would like to change your relationship with the company and offer you the post of Executive Vice President. You would report to me. Would you consider that post with the TNA Team?”
I fell back in my seat. This came out of nowhere. I’d been an independent consultant for twenty-five years. I stuttered, “Where’d this idea come from?”
Debbie grinned, and Kim nodded in her direction with a glance and smirk on her face. Apparently, Debbie had lots of ideas for rearranging the pieces on the TNA chessboard.
“I’m beyond words ... Yes. I accept ... with some provisions.”
Grace chuckled, “You don’t know the salary, bonuses, or anything else about the post.”
“I don’t care. If this is for Kim, I’m all in. I assume that I more or less keep doing what I’ve been doing with the mergers and acquisitions, and the strategic planning?”
Kim nodded, “Yes, and you’ll get some more stock and be better positioned in the company than as an outside consultant. Debbie informs me that some people are suspicious of you and think that you the efficiency guy that’s going to cut their jobs.”
“No ... I’m not.” I appealed to Grace, and she nodded.
“What should I do differently?”
Grace said, “In your new role, get to know the men and women on the shop floor. I know it’s not your purview, but it’ll put a lot of rumors to rest. Talk to them about the expansion plans and the IPO. Bring them into the tent, so to speak. Make friends.”
I said, “You know that Kim and I are living together just about all the time.”
She nodded, “Yes, everybody does, and nepotism is alive and well in all corners of the world. You are not a slug leaching off of our CEO. You are earing your keep and the amount of effort you put in to help grow the company is visible and noticed by all.”
I said, “Then how about I work for one-dollar a month plus some number of shares of pre-IPO stock that you guys think is appropriate. After we’re public, you can keep that comp package or correct it to industry norm; I’ll go along with whatever you think is right and makes the company look good.”
Kim waved her hand, “So be it.”
Debbie and I started to get up, thinking that was the end of the meeting. Kim said, “Not just yet. Please sit down again.” We did.
Kim said, “Deborah Haywood you have proven to be an important asset to the company in ways that go far beyond being my assistant and secretary. Accordingly, you are hereby promoted to the position of Director of Special Projects. You will report to Ron, and will have the entire company as your playground. You are to make things happen that help grow the company and make everyone on the team happy campers. We may assign you things but you are free to investigate and propose lots of ideas to anybody in the company, especially Rona and me.”
Debbie had inhaled and was holding her breath. She put her face in her hands and cried. “Thank you. I will continue to try to do my best for everyone.”
I said with a nod at Kim, “And I assume that right now, her role will continue to be as a key person on the team putting together the submission for listing on the NASDAQ.”
Kim smiled, “I would hope that continues. We can see the end in sight based on what I see posted in the War Room. Am I correct that the submission will be ready around the first week in October?”
