Steven had been to several different airports in his life. He was familiar with the usual chaos: long security lines, overpriced burnt coffee, some people arguing in suits while others slept across seats in their pajamas. Airports were loud, crowded, and irritating. Then Steven arrived at one that was completely different.
The private gate opened, allowing the car Steven ordered to enter. He found himself staring at a building with big glass windows that looked more like a luxury hotel than an airport terminal. There were no crowds, no suitcases weaving through traffic, no anxiety-provoking rushing. Just soft lighting, expensive cars, and perfect organization.
The door opened the moment the car stopped, a uniformed attendant gesturing for Steven to exit. “Good evening, Mister Martucci. Welcome.”
Steven blinked. “Uh, thanks.”
Another attendant was getting Steven’s luggage from the trunk while he left his driver a tip on the app. Inside, the terminal was quiet and clean in a way airports never were. Soft leather seating, expensive fixtures, a small bar near the far wall. No announcements blaring overhead, no big signs for coffee, cheap souvenirs, or greasy food.
Megan fit in perfectly. The tall heiress stood near the lounge with Carter at her side. She was dressed in cream slacks and a dark green blouse, her raven hair in a single long braid down her back. Her pose exuded confidence and confidence as she spoke with an employee, likely confirming something that had already been confirmed twice.
Carter spotted him first. “Steven!”
The energetic six-year-old broke away from his mother and ran across the polished floor at full speed, a stuffed velociraptor tucked under one arm. Steven barely had time to crouch before Carter collided with him, nearly knocking them both over.
“Hey, buddy,” Steven laughed as he caught him. “You ready for Fiji?”
Carter pulled back with a serious look. “I think so. I hope Henrietta will be okay. Beatrice promised to look after him.”
“I’m sure she’ll take good care of her,” Steven replied. “Henrietta isn’t alone in her tank, either. She’s got friends to keep her company.”
“That’s true,” Carter agreed with a sigh. He then held up his velociraptor and immediately changed topics. “I packed three dinosaurs. Mom said I only needed one, but that felt unfair.”
Steven nodded solemnly. “That does feel like a flawed system; one would be lonely.”
“I knew you’d get it!” Carter grinned gleefully as Megan approached, already smiling.
“I said one dinosaur for the plane,” she corrected. “You don’t need three in the plane bedroom.”
“You said bedroom,” the six-year-old shrugged. “This is still the airport.”
“He’s got a point,” Steven smirked.
“Please don’t encourage him,” Megan sighed. “The other two will be fine in the suitcase until we get to Fiji.”
“Already looking for legal loopholes?” a male voice called out. “Looks like we’ve got a future lawyer on our hands.”
Isaac Zimmerman looked exactly like a man whose family had law firms across the globe should: tall, polished, expensive. His brown hair was neatly styled, he wore a tailored navy jacket, and had on a wristwatch that probably cost more than Megan’s first car.
Beside him was Penelope Miller, looking almost as intimidating as Megan herself. The tall blonde was wearing cream slacks and a dark blue blouse. Her hair was in the same braid as Megan’s. It was obvious the two had not only coordinated braids, but outfits.
“Don’t start,” Nell rolled her eyes. “Carter’s already impossible; he doesn’t need a law degree.”
Steven and Isaac shared a handshake while Nell and Megan exchanged air kisses. Penelope then drew Steven into a tight hug as Isaac awkwardly offered Megan a handshake of her own. Dropping to a crouch, Nell mussed up Carter’s hair before kissing the top of his head.
“Did you save room in your bag for seashells?” Nell asked.
Carter took a moment to consider the question. “No, but I can throw away socks.”
“Problem solving,” Isaac nodded approvingly.
“With how bad the used ones will smell, it might actually be a good idea,” Steven mused.
Megan pinched the bridge of her nose. “I’m surrounded by enablers.”
“And yet you keep inviting me places,” Steven said with a smile.
“Careful. That could change,” Megan teased.
The lounge doors opened again, the atmosphere shifting as Megan straightened slightly. An airport employee crossed the room; from the way he was dressed, he may have even been the manager. He looked flustered as he approached Megan with an expression that implied he had news he didn’t want to deliver.
“Miss Bauer,” he said quietly, “your father landed safely in Fiji about an hour ago. He says he expects you to join him for dinner Wednesday evening after everyone settles in.”
“Of course,” Megan said, her shoulders tightening slightly. “Thank you.”
Steven watched Megan closely, realizing she was likely annoyed by the summons. No mention of Theodore telling them to have a nice flight, no greeting. He just expected a formal dinner. It felt like Megan was a colleague of his, rather than his daughter. The man nodded in response to Megan’s words before disappearing efficiently.
After a moment of awkward silence, Carter tugged on Steven’s sleeve. “Do you think Fiji has sharks?”
“Oh, they definitely do,” Steven replied immediately. “I did some research on fun things to do in the area. Shark diving is really popular.”
“Cool!” Carter exclaimed turning toward his mother. “Mom-”
“You are not diving with sharks,” Megan responded instantly.
“Aww,” Carter pouted as another staff member approached.
“Miss Bauer, we’re ready for boarding,” she stated calmly.
The evening air was cooler than Steven expected as they stepped through the gate. The aircraft waited under runway lights; sleek and white, it was far too elegant to simply be described as a plane. Instead of transportation, it looked like a luxurious flying hotel important people used.
“That’s...” Steven trailed off. “That’s impressive.”
“You should see Theodore’s,” Nell giggled, stepping beside him.
“Grandpa’s plane is boring!” Carter interjected. “It’s all business seats. There’s nothing fun.”
Steven looked at Nell. “How many planes do the Bauers have?”
“They belong to Bauer International Holdings,” Megan said, holding Carter’s hand as they boarded. “We just have a few for executives to use.”
“Oh, just a few? Okay,” Steven scoffed as Carter slipped free of Megan and ran toward the plane.
“Slow down!” Megan called.
“I am slow!” Carter shouted back. He was not.
The inside of the jet was even more impressive. Soft lighting, leather seats, polished wood; enough luxury to make the private terminal look casual. Four large, comfortable-looking chairs surrounded a low table. There was also a dining area and another lounge space with a couch facing a large entertainment setup. Carter was beneath the television, looking at the gaming systems.
“Welcome aboard, Miss Bauer,” a flight attendant said. “Can I get anyone something before departure?”
“Water for me,” Megan said. “Thank you.”
“Make that two,” Steven smiled politely.
“You two are boring,” Nell teased before addressing the flight attendant. “A glass of white wine, please.”
“Whiskey, please,” Isaac requested.
“Carter, would you like a drink?” Megan called out.
“Apple juice!” Carter yelled while climbing up on the couch.
“Manners, young man,” Megan admonished gently.
“Apple juice, please,” Carter corrected himself, kneeling on the couch and smiling at the flight attendant.
“Coming right up,” the young woman smiled and headed off to fulfill the orders.
Carter was still exploring and soon pointed toward the rear of the cabin. “Is that my room?”
Megan walked over, placing a hand on his shoulder. “That is where you’re going to sleep, yes.”
“Cool!” Carter grinned.
Steven took one of the big chairs near the front while Megan disappeared with Carter to inspect what he had declared his sky bedroom. Isaac and Nell took the sofa further back, already deep in conversation. Nell had sat down on the opposite side of the couch, but Isaac immediately moved closer and placed his hand on her knee. The drinks soon arrived, and Steven gratefully took a sip of the refreshing ice water.
Megan returned a few minutes later, carrying a small sneaker and looking exhausted. “His carry-on has a dinosaur, a few pieces of his train set, three whoopee cushions, and a shoe.”
“Rookie mistake, Megs,” Nell shook her head. “You’ve gotta check.”
“I did!” Megan grumbled. “I checked his suitcase and his carry-on. I have no idea when he switched things.”
“He beat you on this one, Megan,” Steven smirked.
She laughed softly, dropping into the seat across from Steven, one leg crossing over the other. Megan took a sip of her own water, making a face that suggested she was regretting her choice to skip on the alcohol. Steven marveled at how the powerful woman could seem unstoppable in the office, yet looked so tired and normal in the luxurious jet.
Megan looked like a tired mother just trying to get through an overnight flight with a six-year-old. Steven liked the human version of her best. She had let her guard down and showed herself to be a human being like everyone else. The real person was who Steven was falling for, not the heiress who could control a board room with little more than a stern expression.
The engines roared to live, low and powerful.
Carter reappeared immediately with a stuffed triceratops. “Are we flying now?”
“Almost,” Megan smiled. “We’ll have to sit down for takeoff.”
“Can I sit by the window?” Carter requested.
“Yes,” she nodded, placing a hand at his back.
Steven sat with Megan and Carter at the small table while Nell and Isaac used the seat belts on the couch. Carter had his face plastered against the window as the plane began to head toward the runway. Steven settled back into the leather seat, amazed by what was happening. Fiji. A wedding. A week with Megan. A week with some of the wealthiest people in the world.
The plane surged forward, causing Carter to sit up straight. “This is the good part!”
“Indoor voice,” Megan reminded him as the plane picked up speed.
“We’re outside!” Carter argued as they all felt the plane take off. He squealed when he felt the plane gaining altitude. “Yes!”
“I don’t think we’re outside, bud,” Steven chuckled while looking out his own window.
Carter continued watching as the plane kept climbing. “Clouds!”
“They’re pretty, aren’t they?” Nell called out from the couch.
“Yes!” Carter nodded rapidly. “Hey, Steven? You and Aunt Nell like birds, right?”
“We do,” Steven readily agreed. “I’m hoping to get some good pictures in Fiji.”
“Do you think the birds get mad we’re in their road?” the six-year-old questioned.
“I think we’re a little too high up for birds,” Steven answered patiently.
Dinner trays eventually arrived; a meal far better than anything Steven had ever been given on a normal flight. It was delicious, with Steven savoring every bite while the five of them talked about their plans. Steven and Nell discussed making time for bird watching, with Isaac inviting himself along. Likely for the sole purpose of flirting with Nell.
Despite the late hour, Carter was still full of energy. He happily gave Steven a tour of the plane, pointing out everything and discussing previous trips. Megan let Carter have some extra time but eventually insisted it was time for bed while he stood in the lounge with Steven. The six-year-old was holding two stuffed dinosaurs while negotiating travel rights.
“This one stays with me,” Carter insisted, holding up the triceratops. “He gets nervous.”
“Reasonable,” Steven replied.
“And this one guards the bed,” Carter held out the velociraptor.
“An important job,” Steven nodded seriously. “Didn’t you say you brought three?”
Carter froze. Slowly and dramatically, he looked at his mother, then at Nell, then finally at Steven. There was only one possible answer.
“He’s missing?” Steven asked.
“Uh-oh,” Carter said.
For the next ten minutes, the entire cabin was subjected to an emergency search for a stuffed stegosaurus that was apparently vital to sleep security. Penelope found it inside Carter’s backpack next to a few fruit snacks, a single sock, and Carter’s fart blaster. She brought out the stuffed animal and the plastic noisemaker.
“Recovered,” Nell announced, handing Carter the stegosaurus.
“He was hiding,” Carter nodded, grabbing the third dinosaur.
“What is that?” Steven asked, gesturing toward the fart blaster.
“The fart blaster I bought him,” Nell grinned, aiming it at Steven and pressing one of the buttons.
“Isn’t that ... useful?” Steven questioned.
“Looks fun to me!” Isaac spoke up with a laugh.
“Each sound makes a different sounding fart!” Carter grinned happily.
“Yup!” Nell agreed, pressing another button. “Oh, that was a wet one.”
“Thank you for that gift, Aunt Nell,” Megan sighed as everyone but her laughed. “Okay. Pajamas. Teeth. Bed.”
“I’m not tired!” Carter whined.
“You’re yawning,” Megan pointed out as she crossed her arms.
“That’s just how I’m talking,” Carter argued, stifling another yawn while Steven failed to hide a laugh.
Megan pointed at Steven. “Not helping.”
“I’m providing emotional support,” Steven shrugged.
“No, you’re not,” Megan rolled her eyes, offering Carter her hand. “C’mon, let’s go. The sooner you’re in bed, the sooner you can get up and hang out with Steven.”
“Okay,” Carter sighed reluctantly, taking his mother’s hand.
Steven sat back down with Nell and Isaac, gratefully accepting the drink the flight attendant placed beside him. He could hear Megan negotiating with a child who believed sleep was the worst thing in the world. There was something immensely amusing about the CEO negotiating bedtime with a six-year-old on a private jet.
“When did Carter get so interested in dinosaurs?” Steven asked.
“When he found out Steven used to play with them as a kid,” Nell smirked, peering at him over the rim of her wineglass.
“Her son likes you; you’re in, man,” Isaac smiled reassuringly.
“He’s got a point,” Nell agreed, kicking off her shoes and tucking a leg beneath herself on the sofa. “Megan likes you, and the most important person in her life approves.”
The three of them talked for a little while longer, waving off the flight attendant’s offer to convert the lounge seating for sleeping. Steven noticed Isaac watching Nell with a small smile on his face. He remembered Megan telling him that Isaac was entitled and felt he was honoring women by dating them. It made him think over everything he knew about Nell and why he felt so protective of her.
Penelope had a reputation among the social circles, causing guys to constantly hit on her. Perhaps her actions were partly due to a desire to make sure people were taken care of, even if it meant neglecting her own needs. It often caused people to take advantage of her, but it made her an amazing friend for Megan.
“Well, I’m gonna get out of these clothes and relax,” Nell declared, getting to her feet.
“Sounds great to me,” Isaac looked at her with a smirk.
“Keep it in your pants,” the tall blonde giggled, grabbing her overnight bag. “I’m putting pajamas on.”
Isaac smirked, running his hand over his goatee while staring at Penelope’s ass as she disappeared into the lavatory. “Damn, she’s gorgeous.”
“She is, yes,” Steven said evenly. “Kind, too. Have you known her long?”
“Oh yeah, years,” Isaac answered. “We’ve never been a couple or anything, but we usually end up being each other’s date at things like this.”
“Ever think about being something more with her?” Steven inquired gently.
“I probably should think about settling down at some point,” Isaac mused, taking a sip of whiskey. “I’ll be thirty-four next month and want to have kids before I’m too old to chase them around.”
“I understand,” Steven sighed. “I’ll hit the big thirty in January. It’s making me think a lot about the future, what I want from life.”
“Megan Bauer is definitely someone you should want,” Isaac chuckled.
“I could say the same thing about Penelope Miller,” Steven pointed out.
“True, she’s great,” the lawyer agreed, but he didn’t seem convinced. “She’s fun, loves to party, great with kids.” Isaac then leaned in with a smirk. “And let me tell you; she’s absolutely wild in the bedroom. She’ll do anything you want, and man, that tongue? She’s an artist.”
Steven was saved from having to come up with an awkward response by the reappearance of Nell herself. She was wearing a pair of tiny gray shorts and a plain pink t-shirt, her blonde hair still in a braid. Sitting on the couch beside Isaac, she smiled at Steven before making herself comfortable, tucking her bare feet beneath her body.
Isaac and Nell started talking as Steven went to change as well. The lavatory was nicer than his apartment bathroom, complete with a full shower. He swapped his jacket and button-down for a dark t-shirt and comfortable lounge pants. Then he returned to find the flight attendant had converted the chairs in the far lounge into beds.
“Welcome back,” Isaac said in a friendly voice.
“Thanks, I miss anything exciting?” Steven asked.
“Not really,” Nell shrugged. “He asked how my mom’s doing, if she’s working on any new projects.”
“What does your mom do for work?” Steven questioned, realizing it had never come up. He knew Megan’s mother was a model.
“She never told you?” Isaac asked, looking excited. “Man, I thought you must have known. Her mother’s Nicole Fischer!”
“I ... I know that name,” Steven frowned, trying to place it. “Wait. The actress? She starred in The Forgotten series?”
“Yup,” Nell said in a flat voice. “That’s my momma.”
“Now that you mention it, I do see the resemblance,” Steven said, inspecting Penelope’s face.
“It’s fun watching the first movie when Mom was just a little girl,” Nell commented. “It came out in 1990, so she would have been nine.”
“Part Six must be weird to watch,” Isaac chuckled, glancing at Steven. “You remember that one?”
“Right, the main cast is growing up, graduating high school, and ... oh,” Steven felt heat rising in his cheeks.
“Yes, my mother was naked in that one,” Nell rolled her eyes. “Moving on.”
“To getting you naked?” Isaac teased.
“Go get ready for bed,” she shoved him playfully. “And by ‘bed’ I mean ‘sleep.’”
Isaac got to his feet and found his overnight bag. Then he disappeared toward the lavatory with the kind of confidence that suggested even changing clothes was a legal strategy. The moment he was gone, Steven looked over at Nell. She was curled against the side of the couch with her shoes off, looking both comfortable and tired.
“So, Nicole Fischer?” Steven asked with a helpless expression.
“Dad had just knocked her up when she did that nude scene,” Nell made a face. “So, I’m sort of in the movie?”
“Right,” he chuckled. “She’s a great actress.”
“Thank you,” she smiled sadly. “It’s just weird that everyone has seen my mother naked. She did a lot of sex scenes after Part Six.”
“She died in a lot of other horror movies, too,” Steven pointed out.
“She is one of the biggest names in horror,” Nell nodded. “Acting was never really my thing.”
“You prefer counting coffee beans?” he teased.
“Exactly,” Nell giggled.
“So, you and Isaac?” Steven probed.
“I think I should be the one asking about your intentions with Megan, don’t you?” Nell raised an eyebrow.
“Uh, maybe,” he shrugged helplessly.
“Isaac’s nice. Smooth, smart, funny. He remembers things I say, which is more than most guys do,” Penelope answered slowly. “He’s also a Zimmerman. Men like Isaac are raised in country clubs and board rooms. They learn how to act to get what they want.”
“And what he wants is you?” Steven inquired.
“No,” she shook her head. “What he wants is what’s between my legs.”
“And you’re okay with that?” Steven frowned. “Shit. Sorry. We’re not close enough to talk about that.”
“Tell you what; I’ll answer if you agree to tell me about your intentions with Megan,” Nell offered.
Steven considered the offer for a few seconds. “Deal.”
“I love sex,” Penelope stated honestly. “Love it. I think you’ve noticed I can be very flirty.”
“I’ve noticed,” he smiled. “And there’s nothing wrong with a high sex drive.”
“I know,” she let out a breath. “I guess I had a little too much fun with the wrong people. And yeah, I listened to the crappy advice from idiots who think rich guys are entitled to me.”
“I’m sorry,” Steven winced.
“Don’t be; I should be thanking you,” Nell replied. “Seeing how you treat Megan? I want that. I know I can’t have that with Isaac; he’ll see me as his property, not his equal.”
“So, you’re not okay with it,” he observed.
“I guess not,” the blonde let out a long breath. “I didn’t want to come solo, and it’s not like I haven’t already slept with Isaac.”
“It’s your choice, of course,” Steven nodded. “Just one piece of advice; things won’t change if you don’t change them.”
“You’re right,” Nell agreed. “This is probably my last date with Isaac. I want to find someone who makes me feel the way you make Megan feel.”
“You deserve to be happy, Penelope,” he told her gently.
“Thank you,” she smiled, showing off her pearly-white teeth. “Now I believe it’s your turn.”
“Before Megan, there was someone I was sort of involved with,” Steven began slowly. “Long story short; she wanted to keep things casual and I wanted more.”
“Huh,” Nell looked at him with interest. “In my experience it’s usually the woman who wants more.”
“Things haven’t been that way with me,” Steven chuckled. “Anyway, I became friends with Megan. We had a moment and things changed.”
“Girls talk, Steven,” Nell giggled. “I’ve had a lot of great talks with Megan since we fixed things and she came clean about Carter’s father. I know all about your first time together. And a few of the other times. She even told me the story of eating fast food naked in bed.”
“She tell you about the jalapeno juice on her, ah, breast?” Steven cleared his throat.
“We’re friends; you can say ‘tits’ or ‘boobs,’ it’s fine,” the blonde winked. “And yes, I knew about that one.”
“I didn’t want another casual situation, I really didn’t,” he continued, his hands in his lap. “I wasn’t intimidated by Megan’s power or anything, but I did feel I wasn’t someone who could date a billionaire heiress. Then encounters kept happening and I realized I couldn’t let that hold me back. I’m attracted to Megan and I want to see what we could become.”
“And obviously you’re okay with Carter being her first priority,” Nell said.
“Of course,” Steven nodded. “I understand completely.”
“If things go well this week and you two decide to give it a shot, you have my blessing,” Penelope smiled. “You make her smile and act carefree in a way I haven’t seen from her in, wow, I don’t know how long.”
“Thank you,” Steven responded sincerely.
The lavatory door clicked open, and Isaac stepped back into the cabin. Nell smiled at him, friendly and unreadable. Evan Isaac’s evening clothes looked expensive; a simple black sweater and a pair of casual pants that may have been custom-tailored. Everything about the guy indicated his wealth and status.
They spoke for a few minutes, pausing when they heard soft footsteps from the rear hallway. Megan stepped back into the cabin barefoot, dressed in a purple satin pajama set. She looked less like Megan Bauer, CEO and more like a woman who had just spent an hour negotiating bedtime with a true master.
“How’s my favorite little man?” Nell asked.
“Unconscious,” Megan answered. “Spread diagonally across the bed like the world is his.”
“Sounds about right,” Steven laughed.
Megan smiled, tired and real. Steven’s heart jumped as he once again recognized how truly beautiful she was.
Nell stood up and stretched, nudging Isaac with her foot. “Ready for bed?”
“Yeah, I’m tired,” Isaac agreed, yawning slightly.
Isaac and Penelope headed for the converted lounge area, taking two beds beside each other. It looked like they were facing each other, likely having a whispered conversation. Steven remained where he was, just him and Megan. The raven-haired heiress sat on the couch, facing Steven with a small smile.
“You’re good with him,” she said suddenly.
“Carter?” Steven wondered.
Megan nodded. “He likes you.”
“I like him, too,” Steven smiled faintly. “I heard I helped him understand how great dinosaurs are.”
“Yes,” Megan laughed. “All three are in the bed with him right now.”
“Then he’s safe,” he chuckled.
Megan studied him for a moment, softer than usual. “You ... you make this feel easier.”
It was rare for Megan to speak so plainly; not polished or rehearsed. She just said what she felt. Steven was momentarily stunned. Then he stood up slowly and offered Megan his hands. He helped her to her feet, looking up into her gorgeous blue-gray eyes. She was still the same tall, powerful woman; yet in that moment, Steven realized they were standing as equals.
“You’re a great mother. I can only imagine how hard being a single parent is,” Steven said quietly. “I’ll do my best not to ever make things harder on you.”
For one second, neither of them moved. Then Megan closed the distance. The kiss was sweet and warm, Megan’s soft lips against his as he reached out and took her hand. It felt like Megan was trying to communicate with her mouth, revealing feelings she wasn’t quite ready to vocalize.
“Get a room!” Nell’s voice called out.
“Don’t listen to her!” Isaac added. “No need to stop on our account.”
Megan took a step back, her cheeks red.
“And moment ruined,” Steven sighed.
“We’ll have others,” she whispered. “I should get to bed.”
“Me too,” he agreed.
Still holding Steven’s hand, Megan led him toward the rear hallway, giving them at least a few moments of privacy. Reaching out, Steven held her cheek while leaning in to resume their soft kiss. It wasn’t long before their tongues met, with Megan pressing her body against his and softly moaning into his mouth.
“Sorry I can’t induct you into the mile-high club,” Megan giggled against his lips.
“You already a member?” he asked teasingly.
Megan pulled back slightly and gave him a mischievous smirk. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”
“I would,” Steven chuckled.
“A girl has to keep some secrets,” she bit her lower lip cutely. “Damn, I really wanna give you a blowjob right now.”
“I’m quite disappointed you can’t,” he agreed, pecking her lips.
From the bedroom came the muffled sound of Carter shifting in his sleep. Megan let out a small laugh, her forehead resting against his.
“Of course,” she sighed.
“At least I don’t have to hide under the bed again,” Steven commented. “Timing’s never been our strength.”
“No,” she said softly. “It really hasn’t.”
“Go be a mom,” Steven whispered, his hand on her hip. “I’ll see you in the morning. Or afternoon? This time zone thing really has me messed up.”
“It’s gonna get a lot worse,” Megan laughed, kissing him goodnight.
~Wednesday September 24, 2025~
Fiji was more beautiful than Steven had even imagined; apparently the internet was incapable of capturing such a level of beauty. He had only gotten a few hours of sleep before landing on Viti Levu, survived the second plane to Vanua Levu, and now stood in the arrival pavilion of The Brinkerhoff Azure Cay.
Ahead of him, the resort opened like something from a movie: white stone floors gleaming in the light, reflecting pools, palm trees swaying lazily in the ocean breeze. Beyond the pavilion itself, the clear ocean water stretched out into the distance in impossible shades of blue.
Beside him, Carter had gone completely silent. The six-year-old stood frozen, his small backpack hanging off one shoulder and his stuffed velociraptor in his hand. He was staring out at the beach and beautiful ocean, his mouth hanging open slightly.
Carter spoke up after a few seconds. “That’s a lot of ocean.”
“It does look like they have most of it,” Steven commented. “Have you been to other nice beaches?”
“Yeah, but they weren’t like this!” Carter exclaimed before turning to his mother. “Can we swim right now?”
“Not yet,” Megan smiled.
“But the ocean is right there!” Carter gestured with his velociraptor.
“And you aren’t wearing your bathing suit,” Megan reminded him.
