“Steve, Steve, Steve!” Noah gasped, rushing into the financial analyst’s office just as he was starting up his computer for the day.

“What, what, what?” Steven replied, spinning his chair around to look at the athletic guy with an incredulous expression.

“It’s amazing, unbelievable, indescribable!” Noah panted, gesturing out the door.

“What is?” Steven asked calmly, a small smirk on his face.

“It’s her,” Noah declared. “I just saw my future wife.”

“So, you finally found a legal way to marry yourself?” Steven quipped effortlessly as he entered his password and logged in.

“Just come with me,” Noah urged, walking right up to Steven.

“I have a lot of work to do,” Steven sighed. “Theodore Bauer is coming this week, remember?”

“That’s Megan’s problem, not ours,” Noah reasoned. “Let’s go!”

“Not if Theodore makes her lay people off,” Steven pointed out. “Then it’s our problem.”

“Just come with me,” Noah repeated.

Shaking his head, Steven rose from his seat with a chuckle before following Noah out of the office to where Theo was waiting. Noah led the other two men through the cubicles until they reached the glass doors that led to the lobby. The small waiting area looked the same as always; modern couches, a coffee table, a couple of potted plants, a water cooler. The receptionist’s desk was beneath the sleek “Sphinx” sign on the wall.

The only difference was the number of people crowded around the receptionist’s desk. Usually, the small lobby was only occupied by the receptionist, Hannah McAllister. The petite, bubbly brunette was sitting at her desk, but she was talking to three different people.

Megan Bauer was the first, her commanding presence drawing Steven’s attention like it always did. The second was an extremely tall, thin guy with dirty-blonde hair and green eyes. He looked nervous, but excited, and appeared to be in his mid-twenties. Theo and Steven both knew that the third person was the reason for Noah’s excitement. And Steven recognized her.

It was Kayla Thomson, the daughter of Steven Thomson. Unbeknownst to her, Kayla was also Carter’s half-sister. The eighteen-year-old was even more beautiful in person, dressed in a sharp business jacket and skirt in the same style Megan wore. The two women even had their raven hair in the same style; pigtail braids. Although, Megan’s hair was much, much longer. And the heiress was quite a bit taller than Kayla.

“So, uh...” Theo stammered. “You wanna date the tall guy?”

“Just because you have a girlfriend now doesn’t mean you have to play dumb,” Noah rolled his eyes. “You know I’m talking about the sexy lady standing next to Megan.”

“Her name’s Kayla,” Steven answered reluctantly. “She’s the daughter of a, an old friend of Megan’s from California. She’s here for an internship.”

“It’s fate,” Noah whispered, leaning forward until his nose almost pressed against the glass. “She needs to meet me.”

“She’s eighteen, you’re twenty-six,” Steven pointed out.

“And she lives in California,” Theo added.

“Well, maybe we won’t end up married, but she’s still the hottest chick I’ve ever seen,” Noah breathed. “And I’m the hottest guy here. She’s legal, and probably doesn’t have a lot of experience. I could teach her how to fuck; make her feel things she never has before.”

“Ugh, perverts,” Priya Kapoor hissed as she walked by. “Get your faces away from the door, it’s creepy as fuck.”

“Sorry, sorry,” Theo stammered, backing away from the glass doors.

“Yeah, it really is creepy,” Steven agreed, backing up as well.

“No need to be jealous,” Noah said smoothly, smiling at the pretty payroll specialist.

“You wish,” Priya snorted. “And Theo, don’t make me tell Sienna what you were just doing.”

“Noah was the one checking her out, he made Steven and me look!” Theo argued.

“Right,” Priya walked off, shaking her head.

Theo and Steven watched Priya leave, both of them feeling some guilt. Neither of them were gawking, but they realized it definitely looked that way. Theo felt especially bad since he had just started dating Sienna, and knew his girlfriend was close with Priya. However, he didn’t have time to think about it, since Noah announced they were coming. Theo and Noah reacted quickly, running off and leaving Steven standing in front of the glass doors.

“Uh...” Steven mumbled under his breath as the door opened and Megan Bauer walked in with Kayla and the tall guy trailing behind her.

“Steven, hi! Perfect!” Megan exclaimed, her face lighting up. “This is Kayla Thomson, she’ll be with us for the next couple weeks. And this is Miles Ferguson, one of our new bookkeepers. Kayla and Miles, this is Steven Martucci, financial analyst.”

“Nice to meet you,” Steven offered Kayla his hand.

“Nice to meet you, Steven,” Kayla smiled, shaking his hand.

“Miles, welcome to Sphinx,” Steven offered the nervous guy a handshake.

“N-nice to meet you, sir,” Miles mumbled, shifting the cardboard box in his hand to accept the shake.

“Just ‘Steven’ or ‘Steve’ is fine, no need to be formal,” Steven smiled. “Or nervous. Relax, you’re among friends.”

“Thank you,” Miles smiled, nodding his head.

“I’m gonna show Miles and Kayla to their cubicles so they can get settled in,” Megan said. “Steven, can you grab Brenda?”

“Sure,” Steven agreed, heading off to find the office manager.

Megan led Miles and Kayla down a row of cubicles, to a couple of empty ones near Theo and Noah. It was where the bookkeepers usually sat, and they had decided to give one of the spots to Kayla. Both were simple cubicles with desks and a dual-monitor setup. Megan let them get settled while she went to find the IT guy.

“How are you doing, Miles?” Kayla poked her head over the cubicle wall to ask.

“Uh, I’m okay, thanks,” Miles nodded as he continued unpacking the personal effects he brought. “I’ve done some bookkeeping before, but I’m really hoping I can grow here. A dedicated bookkeeping company is somewhere I always wanted to work.”

“I’m sure you’ll be great!” Kayla smiled as she watched him remove a rubber pineapple from the box. “Um, why do you have a pineapple?”

“It’s a stress ball,” Miles explained, squeezing it several times. “It helps when I’m nervous.”

“Smart,” Kayla nodded.

Steven returned a minute later with Brenda Ortiz, a short, plump woman in her early-fifties. Brenda was very friendly, and Kayla immediately liked her. The office manager even managed to put Miles at ease. Steven made his exit while Brenda confirmed that the two new hires had already filled out all the required forms, including providing emergency contacts. She then handed out welcome packets with a map of the office, some information about the company, and badges so they could get in to the office.

Megan showed up with Danny Chu, the IT specialist. He quickly helped Kayla and Miles log in to their accounts and set up their new emails. When he was done, Brenda and Megan gave the other two a quick tour of the office. Naturally, they started with a better look through the sea of cubicles.

“This is where the magic happens,” Megan declared, gesturing as they walked. “Well, when people aren’t working from home.”

“AP and AR sit over here,” Brenda added. “Camilla is in AR, and Sienna, the redhead, is in AP.”

“Hi!” Sienna smiled, giving a friendly wave. “Welcome!”

“Don’t work too hard, or you’ll make the rest of us look bad,” Camilla teased, and Kayla noticed that the Latina’s cubicle was decorated with various figurines, including a dancing hula girl.

All the cubicles were well-organized, but also allowed for personal touches to be added: figurines, family photos, small plants. Theo had several stacks of color-coded sticky notes, Noah’s desk was cluttered. Both guys were very polite when meeting Kayla and Miles. Vanessa Lake gave them both candy to celebrate their first day, which was something she apparently did for everyone when there was a reason to celebrate.

The massive printer at the end of the cubicles had a sticky note on it reminding people to refill the paper if they used it all. A nearby table had a jar on it labeled “Ideas & suggestions.” There was a small whiteboard above it with various inside jokes and motivational quotes. Kayla laughed at a few of the suggestions that had been written on the board “Please ban Danny from microwaving leftovers,” “Can Angela take a vacation?” and “No more singing along to Alison Tey!”

They briefly took a look at the individual offices. Megan’s was the largest, with a great view of the city. A few others had their own office, including Leslie Pearson, Logan Barrett, and Alyssa Johnston, and Steven Martucci. The nearby IT and server room served as an office for Danny, even though he also had a cubicle. Megan then directed them to the supply closet to get them what they’d need for work, and helped them bring the stuff back to their desk. Brenda made sure to also provide them with free Sphinx merchandise, including pens, mugs, and a t-shirt each.

Next stop was the break room, which was empty at the early hour. There were several tables, a couple of vending machines, two microwaves, and various cabinets. Two large refrigerators had several magnets and notices on them, the notices explaining etiquette and cleaning procedures. Brenda led the new hires over to her precious espresso machine, and they immediately noticed the printed note stuck to it, along with the handwritten “reply” beneath.

Please don’t change the coffee maker settings.

-”Sienna, this is about you and the triple-shot incident.”

Brenda opened the cabinet beneath the machine, showing off the neatly-labeled boxes of coffee pods. She made everyone a cup of coffee while chatting about how great it was to work for Sphinx. Miles was tripping over his words to express his gratitude for the opportunity while Kayla talked with Megan and sipped on her coffee.

“Seems like you guys love your notes,” Kayla observed, gesturing to the note on the espresso machine.

“Yeah, people need reminders sometimes,” Brenda laughed. “More people work from home these days, so I don’t have to clean up the place as often.”

“You should see the bulletin board,” Megan added with a smirk. “Brenda and Jane try posting professional notices, but people write responses in marker or pen all the time.”

“Noah and Theo are common culprits,” Brenda rolled her eyes. “Those two are like twelve-year-old boys sometimes, I can’t imagine what their home is like.”

“Oh, they’re roommates?” Kayla asked.

“Yeah, and I just heard our Sienna is dating Theo,” Brenda confirmed. “There’s a match I never saw coming.”

“Neither did I, but I haven’t been here as long,” Megan laughed.

The four of them talked for a few more minutes before heading over to the bulletin board. Megan was right, the board was a patchwork of handwritten jokes and official memos. A few of the memos had several lines of jokes, followed by a reply from HR to be serious, then a couple more joke responses.

Remote work was definitely the future for many office employees, but Kayla was enjoying this insight into office culture. There was also no guarantee she would end up with a career where remote work was possible. The teenager was laughing as the four of them pointed out the various notices.

There was a lost and found post, and none of them could explain how someone ended up losing a sneaker in the boardroom. The lost USB drive made more sense, and someone wrote in marker that it contained Noah’s fantasy football spreadsheets. There were also duplicates of the posts on the refrigerators. Kayla made a disgusted face when reading the refrigerator rules, grossed out by the fact they needed to remind people that fuzzy food would be thrown out.

A lot of the posts seemed standard, with a few of them explaining employee rights, who to contact if you needed to call out sick, and various other pieces of information. There was a semi-official post for the fantasy football standings, a reminder that the fridge would be cleaned out every Friday, and it looked like HR was planning a potluck. One post mentioned that Theodore Bauer would be visiting on Thursday, and to keep the break room and all conference rooms tidy. Kayla and Miles both enjoyed the feel of this team, laughing at some of the posts and handwritten “responses.”

Reminder: the microwave is not for science experiments!

-”January 15: Noah’s chili disaster, never forget.”

Do not leave personal packages at the reception desk.

-”Looking at you, Eli. We haven’t forgotten the ‘mystery box.’

All employees please be aware the dress code at Sphinx is business casual.

-”Danny, hoodies are NOT business casual.”

-”Neither are Planet Trek Wars pajama pants.”

-”Don’t hate me ‘cause you ain’t me.”

They finished their coffees and made their way to the huddle rooms. The first was aptly named “The Goldfish Bowl” since it had glass walls on three sides. It was a pretty simple setup with a small table, a few comfortable chairs, a whiteboard, and a wall-mounted screen. A large bowl on the corner table held a small goldfish whose name changed depending on who fed it.

Megan explained to the others that she had already promised her son could keep the fish if they ever needed to give it a new home. Brenda then distracted the new hires by pointing out the cartoon drawing of Logan on the whiteboard with a speech bubble saying “This worked in England!” Muttering under her breath, Megan quickly erased it, feeling stressed about her father’s upcoming visit.

Cozy chairs, a beanbag chair, and dimming lights made “The Nap Nook” seem quite comfortable. Kayla joked that this would be her friend Hazel’s favorite room if she ever worked here. Brenda mentioned catching Sienna napping in the room during her lunch break once. Miles smiled at the jar of stress balls that were labeled “For intense meetings only.” The room also had a small bookshelf in one corner that had three copies of The Traveler’s Guide to the Universe for some reason.

The main board room was simply called “The Big Table.” Two of its walls were glass, and the center of the room was occupied by a large conference table with expensive chairs. A whiteboard dominated the back wall, and there was a note on it to remind everyone that Theodore Bauer was visiting soon. People seemed to take the reminder seriously, since there weren’t any doodles on the board.

With the main tour complete, Megan and Brenda had the other two meet a few of the managers. Kayla got along well with the controller, Leslie Pearson. Miles thought James Collier, the HR director, was a nice guy. They also met the client services manager, Vanessa Lake, and the compliance officer, Angela Kim. Logan Barrett succeeded in winning over Kayla with his charm and English accent.

It was then time for the group to split up. Brenda led Miles back to his desk so he could start training with Noah. Kayla followed Megan back to the heiress’s huge office so they could go over the planned schedule for the week. Kayla browsed it with interest, curious about what she would be doing, and who she would be working with.

Day 1: Orientation & HR with Megan Bauer, Brenda Ortiz, and Jane Silver

Day 2: Accounts Payable with Sienna Griffith

Day 3: Accounts Receivable with Camilla Garcia

Day 4: Bookkeeping Basics with Noah Beck and Theodore Caldwell

Day 5: Financial Analysis with Steven Martucci and Alyssa Johnston

Day 6: Client Relations & Marketing with Vanessa Lake and Logan Barrett

Day 7: HR & Payroll with Jane Silver and Priya Kapoor

Day 8: Project Assistance with Leslie Pearson

Day 9: Technology & Office Support with Hannah McAllister and Daniel Chu

Day 10: Wrap-up & Presentation with Megan Bauer and Leslie Pearson

Kayla spent a few minutes looking over the schedule, feeling slightly overwhelmed by how much she would have to learn. She didn’t even really know any accounting terms, and she was getting the impression she was expected to already know some things. Looking up at Megan, Kayla worried that she wouldn’t be good enough, wouldn’t be as smart as her father.

“I, uh, I don’t really know anything about accounting...” Kayla mumbled nervously.

“No need to be worried,” Megan smiled. “You’re stuck with me until after lunch. I’ll teach you some things before setting you up with Jane.”

“Thank you,” Kayla replied. “And um, this mentions a presentation?”

“Nothing too fancy, just a brief five-minute talk, maybe a few slides,” Megan explained. “Show you paid attention and learned some stuff, maybe mention if you have any suggestions.”

“I doubt I can suggest something you haven’t thought of yet,” Kayla bit her lower lip nervously.

“Don’t sell yourself short, you’re a smart cookie!” the socialite grinned.

Megan began her accounting lecture by defining a few terms: revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities, and equity. The accounting equation was pretty simple, and the difference between cash and accrual based accounting was easy to understand. Double-entry accounting was confusing when the definitions of debits and credits came up. Megan reminded Kayla that people spent years learning this stuff, and it wasn’t the end of the world if she didn’t remember everything.

Continuing with the lecture, Megan explained Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and the importance of using accounting software. Kayla took notes the entire time, highlighting important terms. She wasn’t too clear on how finance and accounting differed, but she still made sure to memorize the big financial statements.

Megan wanted Kayla to get to know everyone and encouraged her to eat lunch in the break room. Kayla encouraged the heiress to come along, but Megan was worried people wouldn’t be as comfortable if the boss was around. The outgoing eighteen-year-old just took Megan’s hand and led her right into the break room.

Kayla got along with everyone, able to effortlessly fit in with every personality type. She could talk about anything. Danny and Kayla talked about video games, before the raven-haired beauty started exchanging beauty tips with Camilla. It was soon common knowledge that Kayla was a huge Tey-fan, and Sienna debated with Kayla over which album was the best. They were both hoping for a new album soon, it had been too long.

Things were a little awkward with Megan there, but everyone did their best to relax and enjoy their lunch. Kayla and Megan sat with the seven members of The Gang of Eight, talking with them about the upcoming weeks. Theo and Sienna were so cute, and Camilla was so outgoing. It was obvious to Kayla that Noah wanted to get into her pants.

Jane was friendly, but Kayla noticed that the HR Specialist kept glancing at Megan with jealousy. From the way Steven and Megan were talking, Kayla had an idea of what was going on. Still, it wasn’t her business, so Kayla ended up chatting with Leslie. Leslie was very pregnant, and was happy to give some tips that Kayla could tell her friend Hazel.

The afternoon started with Jane and Kayla heading to Jane’s cubicle. Jane was very professional as she started explaining the purpose of the Human Resources Department. Jane covered hiring, onboarding, compliance, employee relations, and training. In a mid-sized company like Sphinx, payroll also fell under HR, however, that was Priya’s job, not Jane’s.

Kayla took notes on the importance of employee privacy and conflict resolution. Human Resources had to balance between supporting the employees and protecting the company. Jane finally cracked a smile when she explained a disagreement with Steven. Steven Martucci said that HR only existed to minimize lawsuits and make sure the company would win any that did happen.

Pulling out the employee handbook, Jane went through it with Kayla, explaining why certain rules existed. Jane also explained how culture was a part of HR’s job, and a lot of fun company events were planned through HR. Human Resources professionals were trusted with a lot of personal information, and their goal was to keep the company running smoothly.

Jane and Kayla got along well, and they were soon talking and laughing. Kayla grew up an only child, so she was curious about Jane’s experience, being the oldest of five. The way Jane refused to talk about her father beyond saying her parents were divorced was strange to Kayla; she couldn’t imagine not having her own father in her life. Jane was close to her mother and sister, but not as much with her brothers. Kayla gushed about finding out she was going to have a sister.

“Is it weird being in HR when your close friends work here?” Kayla asked at one point.

“Sometimes, and it’s about to get really awkward,” Jane winced.

“Why’s that?” Kayla inquired with a smirk. “You planning on firing Noah?”

“Nah, but maybe someday,” Jane laughed. “I was the one who had to tell him that, it didn’t matter how cute she was, wanting to stay in bed with her all day did not constitute a family emergency.”

“I’ve met plenty of guys like that,” Kayla rolled her eyes.

“Don’t judge him too much,” Jane said, turning serious. “He’s ... well, I’m not sure. He is a good guy, but I think he likes to keep people at a distance. So, he flirts. A lot. Feel free to slap him if you need to, but he’s not a bad person. I know if I ever needed him, he’d be there.”

“He kind of reminds me of a guy I graduated with,” Kayla smiled. “He was a selfish ass for a long time, then finally woke up. He got a lot better.”

“Theo’s growing up, so we’re hopeful Noah will follow his lead,” Jane smirked.

“You were telling me why things were getting weird?” Kayla reminded her.

“Yes. Yes, I was,” Jane nodded. “Do you know what an org chart is?”

“Uh...” Kayla shrugged helplessly.

“It’s used to show the structure of a company, the hierarchy,” Jane explained, doing a quick web search to show Kayla a generic org chart.

“Oh, okay,” Kayla nodded. “So, Megan would be at the top of Sphinx?”

“Yes,” Jane answered. “The problem is that our structure is kind of sloppy. Megan has a LOT of direct reports. Too many. So, we’ve cleaned things up.”

“How does that make things awkward for you?” Kayla wondered.

“Two reasons,” Jane explained. “First, we’re putting our two financial analysts under Leslie, so they no longer report directly to Megan.”

“You have to tell your friend Steven that one of your mutual friend’s is his boss now?” Kayla asked to clarify.

“Yeah...” Jane trailed off. “But, he’ll have to get over it. I mean, Leslie is already Sienna and Camilla’s boss’s boss.”

“Steven seems like a big boy, he won’t mind reporting to a woman,” Kayla said.

“Oh, he’s not some sexist idiot threatened by powerful women,” Jane insisted. “He already reports to Megan just fine. So, ah, maybe Leslie will actually be an improvement. Since, well...”

“Right,” Kayla whispered, knowing Jane didn’t want to talk about her feelings with someone she barely knew. “What was the other reason?”

“Oh, yeah,” Jane nodded, looking relieved. “Leslie is gonna get overwhelmed since she already has accountants and bookkeepers reporting to her. We’re going to send out the new org chart tonight, with a mention that there’s a new Bookkeeping Manager position open. The bookkeepers will report to the new manager, who will report to Leslie. I’m just hoping the two dummies don’t both want it.”

“Noah and Theo,” Kayla stated.

“Yup!” Jane agreed. “This is an important lesson in the difficulty in keeping your personal life out of your business life.”

“Not always possible,” Kayla observed.

“Sadly, that’s true,” Jane sighed, thinking about Steven.

“It’s nice that you have such a great friend group,” Kayla said to break the silence. “I love The Gang of Eight name and you all seem so nice. I just haven’t met Conner.”

“Conner’s a good guy,” Jane smiled. “I’m glad I have them. It’s nice having them in my life. We’re actually working on getting closer. We girls just had a bonding day.”

“Oooh, those are amazing!” Kayla gushed. “My friends do stuff like that. Watch cheap movies, eat crappy food, talk about boys.”

“Exactly!” Jane exclaimed.

Jane and Kayla read through the official email, and Jane scheduled it to go out that night so that most people would see it in the morning. Then Kayla left with Megan and returned to the heiress’s home. The nanny, Beatrice said goodbye to everyone before leaving for the evening.

Kayla was learning and managed to discover the trap whoopee cushion before sitting down to dinner. They were having what had come to be known as a Megan-special. In other words, Megan didn’t want to cook so she stopped at a restaurant and picked up a to-go order. Carter and Kayla thanked Megan, both of them joking that it would definitely be better than her cooking. Megan blew a raspberry at Carter, and Kayla loved seeing this side of the powerful woman.

The three of them decided to have an art evening after dinner. Megan mentioned still having all the hand prints Carter had traced for her. It gave Kayla the idea of tracing her own hand, captioning it “Kayla: Age Eighteen” and sending it to her father. Ten minutes later, Kayla got a message back with a hand print captioned “Steven: Age Forty.”

Carter asked Miss Kayla about her day, although he was most interested in hearing how the fish was doing. Kayla talked to him about his upcoming trip to Fiji, relating it to the time she went to Bermuda with her friends and father. Megan was smiling, but deep down she was worried; the two had such a strong connection, would Kayla realize the truth?

When it was Carter’s bedtime, Kayla and Megan both read with him. Megan had fun voices for all the characters, and soon Kayla was joining in and coming up with her own silly voices. Carter loved it, and the six-year-old managed to convince them to read him another story before he went to sleep.

Megan and Kayla decided to relax in the living room with a couple glasses of wine. The two women were casually talking while playing on their phones. Kayla was texting her friends and father while Megan exchanged messages with Steven and Penelope.

“How’s your boyfriend?” Kayla asked teasingly.

“Steven’s not my boyfriend,” Megan rolled her eyes. “But, he’s fine.”

“What’s he up to tonight? Why isn’t he here cuddling with you?” Kayla smirked, curling up on the couch.

“It’s a Monday night, he’s home,” the heiress responded.

“Alone? Gross,” Kayla made a face. “I, ah, I don’t do well alone. I get in my head.”

“About what happened to you?” Megan asked carefully.

“Yeah...” Kayla trailed off. “And about missing Mommy, then I start worrying something will happen to Daddy. It’s just better if there’s someone around if I need them. I could never live alone.”

“I’ve never really lived alone,” Megan said. “I was living with my father, then I got pregnant. Even though I’m the parent, it is nice having Carter here. I love him.”

“That kid’s great,” Kayla smiled. “Um, can I ask you a personal question?”

“Go for it,” Megan replied, her heart racing as she struggled to hide her anxiety.

“Does Carter ever ask about his father?” Kayla wondered. “I mean, um, I know I’d be curious. And I, ah, I figured his father was that guy, you know, from the video. Not, not that I watched it! Or maybe it was someone else and, ah, and I’ll shut up now.”

“It’s okay, I’ve asked you some personal questions, it’s only fair,” Megan smiled. “Yes, Carter asks sometimes. I deflect as best I can. I like to remind him that his mother loves him with all her heart, enough for two parents.”

“I mentioned it before; having one amazing parent,” Kayla responded, looking uncomfortable. “Can I ask another question?”

“Sure,” Megan nodded.

“That Andre Durand guy never reached out to ask if Carter was his son?” Kayla questioned. “I mean, you’re famous enough that he probably heard about Carter.”

“Andre just assumed Carter wasn’t his,” Megan shrugged. “He knew I was, um, quite promiscuous during that time.”

“Fuck, what an asshole,” Kayla growled. “Leaked that recording and didn’t even try to find out if he had a son.”

“Andre didn’t leak the sex tape,” Megan said, letting out a breath. “He didn’t do it.”

“It was you?!” Kayla gasped. “Most people said it was him and that you were cool with it, but I did see a few people suggest you did it to rebel or whatever.”

“I didn’t leak it either,” Megan admitted with a small smile. “Only Penelope knows exactly what happened there. But, I hope you and I can be good friends. I’ll tell you the story another time.”

“And I’ll tell you what happened to me,” Kayla promised. “Thank you for trusting me. I don’t know what I did to deserve it.”

“I told you, I felt bad about ghosting your father,” Megan laughed. “I could tell how much he loved you when I spent that weekend with him. I wanted to meet the grown-up you. I was not disappointed.”
