Chapter 2: Babysitting

Since my parents pay my college tuition and fees, plus a pretty nice allowance, I don’t have to worry about holding down a job while at school which makes it much easier to get my studies done and keep up my grades. Alas, during the summer they expect me to do something on my own for spending money even though if I ask my dad he always helps me out - he can be such a push over if you ask him the right way!

Having no desire to be a waitress or work in the mall, I mostly baby-sit. Don’t laugh, the pay is great (and in cash) and the hours aren’t so bad. Most people in my neighborhood are pretty well off and are willing to pay $8-10 an hour for a college girl to watch their kids. They feel more secure with me than leaving their kids with some flaky fourteen year-old barely out of grade school.

As I get paid in cash that means no taxes which makes the pay a LOT better than what my friends make waitressing and clerking, plus they have to deal with crazy customers and perverted bosses! I get to handle small kids who generally like me (with a few notable exceptions). They usually go to bed early, leaving me with half the night to myself.

Then there are also the “side benefits” of being able to check out the house where I usually find “interesting” clothes and such, especially in the master bedroom. OK parents, don’t worry, I would never even consider doing anything stupid while your kid is in my care! No boyfriends or anything like that are allowed over when I sit. Indeed, I take the responsibilities of the job very seriously and recognize that the parents have entrusted their most precious things in their loves with me. I would never do anything whatsoever to violate that trust!
