Chapter 10

Monday morning Judy was waiting in Ben’s office when he arrived. “What’s up?” He asked.
“I need you to come with me. Now!” Without another comment, she turned and walked out of his office. Ben was so stunned to find her waiting he never thought to try and read her thoughts regarding what was happening. They rode up to the top floor in the elevator and as Judy stepped off, she called over her shoulder, “Follow me.” They walked down the hallway and into her office. She continued through and then opened Andrew Jenkins’s office door.
She motioned for Ben to enter, and Jenkins stood, pointing at a chair in front of his desk. “Good morning. Please come in and take a seat.” Ben sat, wondering what was going on. “Thanks for coming up so quickly.” Jenkins told him. Ben could see no reason to tell his boss he didn’t have much choice. “The reason I wanted to see you is we are expanding our business. We have several clients in Clarkston and most of them are yours and we’ve decided to open a new office. Because you have a large clientele base there, I want you to run the new office. We want you to go over there and find new office space, secure it and purchase the necessary office equipment. See if you can also find yourself another Judy.”
“Sir, there is only one Judy.” Andrew laughed and Judy beamed at Ben.
“I agree. Anyways, I’d like to offer you the position of vice-president. Are you interested?” Ben was stunned. He’d developed a few business contacts in Clarkston, but it was mainly due to his first account who was so pleased with his efforts they’d spread the word about Ben. Most of the business grew from that first account. Ben hadn’t realize he had so many customers it would warrant opening a new branch.
“Sir, I’m stunned. I know I had a couple of account over there...”
“A couple? Are you kidding?” Jenkins interrupted Ben, “Right now, your customer list over there represents about a third of our business.” Andrew looked over at Judy for confirmation and she nodded. “Don’t be so modest. Are you interested?”
“Sure, I’m interested. But...” Jenkins interrupted again, “There’s a raise involved as well as a relocation bonus. Finish this week, then take a few days off and go see what you can arrange for office space as well as find a secretary for you. Also, look for a place for you to live.” Ben allowed himself to enter Jenkins’ mind and read some of his thoughts. He didn’t know if it was because of Judy, or if Andrew had realized on his own how much business Ben had brought in over the past year.
Ben decided he wanted to accept the position. “Sir, I’d be honored to take the position.” Ben stood and extended his hand. Jenkins stood and extended his and they shook. “If you don’t mind, may I take today off as well?”
“Go ahead. If you need anything, just get in contact with Judy.”
Ben thanked the man and left with Judy in tow. Once they were in her office, Ben turned and faced her, “How much of this promotion is your doing?” He smiled as he asked.
“Andrew has complained several times how difficult it is to have so much business in Clarkston and continue to do a good job for them. I started suggesting you’d be a good fit to run the new office, and he saw the wisdom in my suggestion. Are you pleased?”
“Yes and no. I kind of have a life here and I hate to give it up and start over.”
“Do you mean Sheila?”
“There is that, and other things as well.” Ben knew there was no way he could explain his six alien friends. They would always be his secret.
“Well, I did have an ulterior motive.” She murmured, looking down at the floor.
“And that is...” Ben had already read her mind and knew where the conversation was going.
“Well, the company has a strict policy about employees dating, sleeping together. However, if you were in a different city, a different state, who is to know what we do? I want to spend some time with you. I haven’t forgotten what you did for me with my asshole boyfriend. I’ve wanted to sleep with you ever since. What would Sheila say?”
“We’ve discussed this. I always thought since there was a no fraternization policy at work, we’d never have to make that decision. But basically, she told me if I ever wanted to, it was fine with her. But I have to share with her what happened later. How do you feel about that?”
Judy grinned, “I think that’s pretty sexy.”
Ben left her office and went down to his car; he wanted to contact Sheila and share with her what was happening. He wondered if he was able to contact any of the aliens. He left the parking lot, drove around for a bit, pulled into a park and drove to the rear where he found an isolated spot. Since he didn’t know how to contact the aliens, he closed his eyes and concentrated on the sound of bell the aliens used to contact them.
Eventually he heard a voice, “What do you need Ben?” It was Voluptas.
“Can you get Sheila and take us someplace so we can talk and then return us like you do without any passage of time?”
“Of course. Where do you want us to take you?”
“It doesn’t matter. The main thing is nobody will notice she’s been gone.” No sooner had he said what he wanted, and he found the two of them in a room together. Sheila was startled.
“What the hell’s going on?” she asked.
“Sorry to get you like this, but I needed to talk to you.”
“What happened to the bell?” Sheila asked.
“I initiated this chat. I need to talk to you.”
“What’s up?” Ben proceeded to tell her about his morning and the offer of the new position. When he finished, she seemed sad. “What’s going to happen to us?”
“That’s the main reason I wanted to talk to you. Nothing will happen if you still want us to continue. Look, I wanted to speak to you, and I asked if our friends could set it up so we can talk and when we’re done, you’ll go back to exactly where you were at the same moment you left. I also wonder if our friends can help us get together whenever we want if I took the position in Clarkston.”
A male voice sounded in their heads, “Sorry to listen in, but we were concerned because Ben summoned us. He’s never done that before. By the way, congratulations on your promotion Ben.” It was Inuus speaking. “As for your desire to be able to see each other, this can be done. Ben found out today all he has to do is concentrate on the sound of the bell and it’ll sound for us and one of us will come to him. Either of you can summon us. Tell us what you want and if you desire, we can transport you so you can be together. No time will pass, and you’ll be returned to exactly to where you were. We’re happy to be able to do this for you.”
Ben jokingly asked, “If we’re together, and we decide to have sex, then you’ll want to participate?” Sheila chuckled.
