Chapter 6: Everything

Romantic Sex Story: Chapter 6: Everything - In 1685 Ayutthaya, Dutch merchant Pieter de la Cort stops walking in a courtyard because of a woman's eyes. Mali is everything — composed, brilliant, entirely herself. What grows between them is real and permanent. But Mali knows love means honesty, even when honesty costs everything. What she builds for her family — and who she chooses to build it with — will define them all. A story of love without conditions, in a world about to change forever.

They were married on a Saturday morning in the foreign quarter’s small Dutch Reformed chapel, which smelled of candle wax and river damp and the particular antiquity of a building that had been holding foreign sorrows and foreign joys for fifty years in a city that paid it no particular attention.

The ceremony was brief. The dominee was a thin Frisian man who had been in Ayutthaya long enough to perform this particular service without surprise — a VOC man taking a local wife was not unusual, and he conducted the matter with the same plain efficiency he brought to all things, which suited both of them perfectly.

Lim witnessed. Som witnessed. The cook had pressed her best clothes and stood at the back with her hands folded and an expression of profound personal satisfaction, as though this outcome had been obvious to her from the moment Mali had walked through the compound gate and she had merely been waiting for the principals to catch up.

Mali wore rose gold silk.

She had chosen it herself, three days before, at the market with Pieter beside her. He had said choose what you want and meant it completely and she had moved through the silk merchant’s stock with the focused attention she brought to everything and stopped at the rose gold without hesitation. It was the color of the temple spires in late afternoon light. The color of the river at dawn. It was entirely hers and she knew it the moment she touched it.

Pieter had looked at her holding the silk against herself and said nothing. His face said everything.

She wore it now in the small chapel with the river light coming through the single window and the dominee reading the words that made everything official, and when Pieter took her hand and slid a second ring alongside the first — a wider band, gold, plain and permanent — she felt the weight of it settle onto her finger like something that had always belonged there and was only now arriving.

Mali de la Cort.

True now in every way that mattered.

The compound was quiet that evening.

Lim had taken Som and the household boys to the night market with the transparent excuse of needing provisions that could not possibly wait until morning. The cook had left a meal on the kitchen table and vanished with the discreet efficiency of a woman who understood exactly what an evening required and what it did not.

They ate on the veranda as they always did. The familiar sounds, the familiar light. Everything ordinary and nothing ordinary at all.

They didn’t talk much. They didn’t need to. Five chapters of conversation had already said what needed saying and what remained between them now was not words.

When the meal was finished Pieter set down his cup and looked at her across the table — that direct look, nothing performed in it — and held out his hand.

She took it.

He led her inside.

The room was lit by a single lamp, turned low. Through the window the river sounds came in — the water, the distant bells marking the evening hour, the ordinary music of the city going about its night.
