Ted had been in the area for almost two years and he was very happy with his house and his assignment. His career was going very well. He was in line for advancement to lieutenant Colonel and would put on the extra rank in another six months. The day he found out about his higher rank he called his sister and then he called Darla.
Darla was very happy for Ted and offered to make dinner for him. Ted had been to her house three times but never stayed long. He noticed that she like to be alone in her house and that company made her very nervous. When he accepted the invitation for her to make dinner he asked if she needed the key to his house. She replied by saying the he was coming over to her house. There was an uneasy silence over the phone for several seconds before she said that it was OK, and that she would be fine. Ted was unsure but accepted with a heartfelt thanks.
The day arrived for the dinner and Ted offered to bring a nice wine to the dinner. Darla agreed and thank Ted for the thoughtfulness. HE stopped along the way and picked out a nice white wine from southern Germany. It was more suitable for a sweet dish since it was a sweet wine. Ted also picked up some white roses with a sprinkling of some kind of small red flowers.
Ted had chosen to wear a nice set of tan slacks with a white Polo shirt and a set of all white running shoes. Since being in the area he had managed to get a bit of a tan and now looked very good in his uniform as well as any other type of clothing. With his advance in rank he would make better money and also be promoted to the second ranking officer in his squadron. During his first year in Las Vegas he had been trained as an instructor pilot and now was training other pilots in flying the newest versions of the F-16.
On the field and in the air he was very comfortable and happy. But when on the ground and out of uniform he was still very quiet and reserved. He and Darla had spent many hours together and he considered her his best female friend. Ted had thought about trying to move the relationship beyond simple friendship but his gut told him to let Darla make the first move. By this time he new she was under a psychiatrist care but what her problem was he didn’t know and was unwilling to ask her about it.
Ted drove into Darla’s drivway and stopped his car and got out. Grabbing the bottle of wine he headed for the large set of double doors that served as the front entrace to her rather large house. Next to his house she lived in a mansion. Ted knew she made good money but her house was paid for and she did drive a very nice Mercedes. They had taken several trips together and she always offered to drive her car. He always offered to drive but to be truthful he really liked her car.
Just as he was about to ring the bell the door opened and revealed Darla standing in the forier dressed in a nice plain white blouse and a set of dark blue slacks. As was her practise she was wearing a set of white slippers and he knew that as he entered the house he was to remove his shoes a put on a set of matching slippers.
“I have the wine and I also brought some flowers to help dress up the table. I hope you like them.”
Darla smiled and replied. “I love the flowers and the wine will be perfect, you do have good taste in both. Please come in, dinner is almost ready, I do hope you are hungry.”
“I’m always hungry and ready to eat. My sister tells me I have a tape worm since she always has to watch her weight and I’ve always been able to eat and not gain a pound.”
Ted entered the house and stood still as Darla closed the door and then started toward the kitchen. Ted slipped off his shoes and put on a set of white slippers and then followed her into the kitchen.
Darla’s house was large by any standards and the kitchen was by far the largest room in the house. It was connected to the dinning area and an area that served as a family room. Darla had furnished the room with nice furniture and a very large Television at the far end of the great room. The kitchen had two large islands and a lot of spare counter space.
The dining area had a small dark wood table with three chairs around it. The table was set with two sets of plates and glasses along with the other items needed for a good dinner. Ted pitched in and soon all pf the food was placed on the table and he helped her with her chair and then seated himself.
Darla poured some fine red wine into the first of three glasses and then picked it up and said.
“I would like to propose a toast, To Ted and his promotion, may you always fly fast and free.”
Ted blushed a bit and then picked up his glass and touched it to hers and then they both drank and then started in on dinner.
Two hours later the two of them had finished dinner and both had pitched in to get all the dishes done and put away. After that they had brought their white wine into the living area and turned on the Television and were sitting together on a love seat and watching an old movie on DVD. Since they had both seen the movie several times and they both loved the movie it was easy for them to chat and watch at the same time. Sometime during the course of the last half of the movie Darla had snuggled up to Ted and had taken his had in hers and stopped talking and was watching the movie.
For Ted, it was both strange and nice that Darla was sitting so close and now she was holding his hand. Ted was having trouble not taking the lead and trying to kiss her. He had to stay focused and not try anything that would ruin their friendship.
It had taken Darla three classes of wine and an extra dose of her drug for her to work up the courage to tell Ted about her past. She just hoped that he would understand her trouble and not be offended or scared by her problems and her past.
Ted felt Darla sit up when the movie ended. She touched the remote and the TV turned off. Darla turned to face Ted and prepared to speak.
“Ted, you know that I see a psychiatrist.”
“Yes, but I assumed that when you were ready to tell me about it, you would, I must admit I am curious but I am patient.”
“Thank you for being a friend, I needed a friend the most when you came into my life. IT has taken me two years to feel comfortable enough to tell you about my past.”
Darla took a swig of wine and continued. “I was going to the university in Atlanta Georgia with a friend of mine. We lived together and had a lot of classes together. For us life was good we had lots of friends and were for the most part very happy. I don’t know if you remember, but some years ago a man kick named “The Rune Killer” was active.
“I remember reading the same material that the rest of America had to ready but I was out of country at the time and what news there was about the crimes came by way of word of mouth and the occasional article that made it into the local paper in the area I was located.”
Darla looked worried and uncomfortable but continued.
“The man who did the killing took victims from different cities around the country. I was the one victime who lived through the experience. MY best friend and room mate was not so lucky. She was murdered, and I was spared.”
Ted sat looking into her eyes and hoping that his shock wasn’t leaking through his concerned face.
“Please go on, I would like to know about anything you remember and are willing to tell me.”
“The killer took us from a street near out apartment and after he was done in the Atlanta area he took me with him. I was abused both physically and mentally. I tried to get over the experience by myself but found out I wasn’t able to do it by myself.”
Darla continued.
“I checked myself into a hospital for treatment. I also received a large sum of money from the killer. I guess he felt guilty about what he had done to me. For the last few years I have been trying to get past the experience and move on with life. For a year after I left the hospital I never left the house. It took the friendship of a delivery girl to get me out of the house and to finally move away from Atlanta and to move on to Las Vegas.”
