Clarence woke before the bell and got up without thinking about it.

The shelf beside his desk was empty.

He stood there a moment, then turned away and went into the bathroom. The light was harsh this early. He leaned closer to the mirror. The bruise along his jaw had faded at the edges but still pulled when he opened his mouth too wide.

He splashed water on his face, brushed his teeth, and dressed.

Downstairs, the house was already awake.

Anastasia was at the table when he entered, a cup of tea in front of her. She looked up once, quick and neutral.

“You’re early,” she said.

“Yeah.”

She watched him a second longer than necessary, then went back to her tea.

Mrs. Rosewood moved between the stove and the counter. “Sit,” she said, already reaching for a plate.

Clarence sat. Bread. Eggs. No cake this morning.

“Jaw better?” Mrs. Rosewood asked.

“Fine.”

Anastasia’s gaze flicked to his face and away again. She didn’t comment.

They ate in silence.

The house felt normal. Dishes clinked. The kettle clicked off. A chair scraped against the floor when Anastasia stood. She paused beside the table like she might say something, then didn’t. She carried her cup to the sink and rinsed it carefully.

Clarence finished, stood, and took his plate with him.

He checked the clock near the door. It was still early, but he left anyway, without waiting to be dismissed. Behind him, the kitchen kept moving.

——————————————— The bus was already loud when Clarence climbed on.

Someone in the back was arguing about whether Coach had actually cried during last year’s finals. A paper airplane hit the window and slid down slowly like it had given up halfway.

Tina was halfway through telling a story when she spotted him.

“—and then he says it’s ‘vintage,’” she was saying, air-quoting dramatically. “Vintage of what, exactly? The Civil War?”

The girl across the aisle laughed too hard.

Clarence dropped into the seat beside Tina.

She paused mid-performance and gave him a look. “Wow. You’re in a mood.”

“I’m sitting.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

He shrugged.

She squinted at him. “You get quieter when you’re thinking. It’s creepy.”

“I’m not thinking.”

“That’s worse,” she said.

He almost smiled at that.

Behind them, someone shouted, “He totally flinched first!” followed by, “You’re blind, Marcus!”

Tina leaned closer. “Ignore them. They’ll be replaying that fight until graduation.”

“I am ignoring them.”

She studied his face like she was trying to see through it. “You know what your problem is?”

He denied with his head.

“You don’t try.” She tilted her head. “Every other guy here is constantly trying. You just ... exist.”

“That’s a complaint?” he asked, staring at her.

She hesitated, then shrugged. “Still deciding.”

The bus lurched. She grabbed the seat in front of her, and for a second her knee bumped his. She didn’t move it right away.

“You’re impossible,” she said, but there was a grin tugging at her mouth.

“You’ll live,” he said, closing his eyes.

“Oh, I know I will.” She leaned back, flipping her hair out of her face. “The question is whether you will.”

He opened his eyes and looked at her sideways. “Threat?”

“Public service announcement,” she smirked. A second later she added, quieter now, “You don’t scare easily.”

“Should I?”

“No.” She met his eyes. “That’s the interesting part.”

The bus slowed at the school entrance.

She stood, grabbed her bag, then paused. “Try not to look so intense all day. It ruins my reputation.”

“You have a reputation?”

She gasped, mock offended. “Excuse you?”

She bumped his shoulder on the way past.

He watched her move down the aisle, trading comments with two seniors like she owned the place.

She didn’t look back.

He followed a moment later.

The house felt too still when Clarence came in.

He had just dropped his bag on his bed when Anastasia stepped out from his bathroom.

“Clarence.”

He turned and was shocked to see a completely nude Anastasia standing before him.

“What...?”

“I told you the order was still valid,” she said. “And I’m here to carry it out.”

He didn’t look away. “You can’t.”

Her brow tightened. “Please. You know I will be punished again if...”

Clarence looked Anastasia in the eyes. “I’m not a virgin anymore,” he confessed.

The words seemed to take a second to settle.

“What?” she asked, confused.

“Tina,” he smiled.

Her hands curled slightly at her sides, then forced themselves still.

“You lost your virginity to Tina?” Her voice, normally steady, betrayed her distress.

“After the fight. She and I...”

“You’re not a virgin anymore,” she deflated.

“No.”

Silence. Not the neutral kind, but the kind that builds behind the ribs.

“You knew my orders,” she said.

“Yes.”

“And you saw me being punished for failing to carry them out.”

He nodded.

Her jaw tightened. “You did it on purpose.”

“It was not planned,” Clarence explained. “She was with me when the fight broke out. After I won she was horny and I was ... it just happened.”

She turned away a step, then back again, as if hoping the movement would change the situation.

“You ... you...,” she started, but words didn’t come.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “But you wouldn’t have been able to convince me, anyway.” It was a lie. He certainly would have done it eventually, to spare Anastasia another whipping. But now it was a moot point.

Anastasia closed her eyes briefly. Just once. She knew he was lying but she also knew he was right. This way there was no violation. No defiance. Just timing.

She exhaled slowly. “I will have to report this.”

“I know.”

That seemed to hit harder than if he’d argued.

For a moment she looked almost lost — not angry at him, not even angry at Elias. Just caught.

“You would have said yes in the end,” she said quietly.

“Yes,” Clarence confessed. He owed her that, at least.

She looked at him differently then. Not as a child. Not quite as a master either.

Just ... differently.

“I will inform Evelyn,” she said finally.

He nodded in silence.

She went back to the bathroom and then reappeared, dressed in a silk gown. She walked past him without a word.

Evelyn was in the sitting room when Anastasia entered. She looked up at once, reading the tension before a word was spoken.

“Well?”

Anastasia remained standing. “I cannot carry out my orders.”

Evelyn’s brow creased. “What do you mean?”

“He’s not a virgin anymore.”

The words seemed to hang in the air.

“What?”

“One of the girls at school.”

Evelyn stared at her for a moment, as if waiting for the correction that didn’t come. “When?”

“The day of the fight.”

A sharp breath left Evelyn. “That’s not possible.”

“It is.”

Evelyn stood and crossed the room once, then back again, trying to reorder the sequence in her mind.

“The order was clear: Take his virginity,” she said, more to herself than to Anastasia.

“Yes,” her daughter confirmed, looking at the floor.

“And now that’s not possible anymore.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn’s hand tightened around the back of a chair. “If Elias believes this was deliberate, he will be punished.”

Anastasia did not react outwardly, but her shoulders had gone rigid.

“And if he believes you were negligent...” Evelyn let the rest of the sentence fade. She didn’t need to finish it.

“The order was for me, not for Clarence,” Anastasia said quietly.

“I know that.” That was the problem. Elias might not care.

“When he told you...” she asked after a moment. “Did he gloat?”

“No.”

“Then what did he do?”

Anastasia hesitated, choosing the word carefully. “He simply told me. Only the facts.”

Evelyn’s gaze sharpened. That unsettled her more than defiance would have.

“He doesn’t understand what the consequences may be,” she murmured.

Anastasia did not contradict her.

After a long moment, Evelyn straightened. “I will inform Master Elias,” she said. “Remain available.”

Anastasia bowed her head slightly as Evelyn left the room.

Elias was at his desk when Evelyn entered.

He did not look up immediately. “Yes?”

“Your order about Clarence’s virginity ... is impossible to carry out,” she said.

Now he looked at her. “What do you mean?”

“Clarence had sex with a girl at school. Before Anastasia made her second attempt.”

Elias straightened in his chair.

“Before.”

“Yes.”

“And you verified this.”

“She reported to me and I believe her.”

His expression hardened.

“He did this on purpose?” Elias asked.

“Anastasia doesn’t think so,” Evelyn replied. “According to Clarence, it was just after the fight, in the heat of the moment.”

Silence settled in the room.

“So...” Elias said slowly
