Mrs. Duran’s face turned red with fury as she paced back and forth in her office. Not only two of her staff-one of them her niece- had been attacked in the middle of the day, but the attacker had also shouted slanderous remarks about their school.

She called a certain phone number and, and after a tense conversation, Mark Dickinson’s fate was sealed. He would not be facing an anonymous grave in the countryside, but rather a new life in Spain as an English teacher for adults in the city of Malaga. A couple of days after the incident, Peter was in his office when his door rattled as a hand knocked on it.

“Come in,” he called out, straightening his tie and sitting up in his chair.

Angela peeked her head into the room, a hesitant smile on her face. “Hi,” she said softly.

“Hello,” Peter replied. “Please, sit down.” He gestured at the chair, keeping the desk between them.

She sat down carefully, fidgeting with the hem of her skirt. “Mrs. Duran just told me that Mark is being transferred to Spain. He got a new job and as long as he stays out of trouble, he’ll have a good life there.”

“That’s good news,” Peter said, trying to sound neutral.

Angela let out a sigh. “Can we talk?”

“Of course,” he said, forcing a smile.

She sighed. “Look, I know we may seem intimidating at times but we’re not monsters. This school means a lot to us and we’ll do whatever it takes to protect it. But we will never resort to violence. That goes against everything we believe in.”

“Why are you telling me this?” Peter asked, raising an eyebrow in confusion.

“I’m not blind,” she said. “I saw how tense you got when I mentioned Mark’s fate. You think you are in danger, or that something will happen to you if you ever want to leave. We are not the mob, the mafia, the yakuza or something like that!” she spoke with conviction.

“The girls talk. These last two days you have lost some of the edge, the spark, in your classroom. Right now you’re just going through the motions. Your heart is not in it.”

Peter tried to deny it with his head, but Angela was adamant.

“Please, Peter, that’s not enough. You must believe in what we do here.”

“And if I don’t?” Peter challenged her.

“Then you will be reassigned to another school and never return to St. Mary’s,” Angela said firmly.

“That’s not what your aunt told me,” Peter countered.

“Let me guess, she gave you the whole ‘powerful friends’ speech?”

Peter was taken aback. “Yes, she did.”

“That speech comes directly from the ’St. Mary’s Principal’s Aid’,” she laughed.

“Is there a ’St. Mary’s Principal’s Aid’?” he asked, surprised.

“Of course there is,” Angela confirmed. “And if you ever become the principal, you’ll be reading it too.”

She looked at him earnestly. “Please, just give the school a chance. That’s all I ask.”

Peter smiled. “That I can do.”

Angela stood up and went to the other side of the desk, leaned and kissed him on his lips.

“Thank you,” she said.

He looked at her leaving, his pants suddenly tighter.

——————————— Peter was trying to concentrate on the dossier in front of him, but his mind kept drifting back to Angela. Of course, the school had wisely decided to keep the voting process secret to avoid any jealousy or hurt feelings among the students.

A mischievous glint appeared in Minnie’s eye as she whispered in a low voice, “You can have my scallop anytime you want.” The muffled giggles of the other girls let Peter know that her voice hadn’t been low enough. Despite his best efforts, he couldn’t help but blush at her flirtatious words.

After tasting all the dishes, Peter returned to the table where three teachers, the school counselor, and Mrs. Duran were seated. Angela greeted him with a warm smile.

“Did you have trouble deciding your vote?” she asked playfully.

He nodded in agreement, still savoring the lingering flavors on his tongue. “Yes, each student truly excelled in their cooking lessons,” he admitted with a grin. Mrs. Crandall, the chef de cuisine and teacher at their school, beamed with pride upon hearing his praise.

Finally, it was time for the votes to be counted and announced. With bated breath, everyone waited for Mrs. Duran to make the announcement.

“And the winner of our cooking competition is ... Miss Minnie Olsen for her mouth-watering scallop au vin!” Mrs. Duran declared with a smile. Cheers and applause erupted from all around as Minnie blushed and accepted her well-deserved victory.
