The announcement brought everything from “What?” to “Bullshit!” to a crow of “I KNEW it!” from Damian.

Toby stuck up his hand. “I know, it sounds like total bullshit, but some of you know for sure – right, Randy? Bernice?”

“Oh, Hell yeah!” Bernice erupted.

“It was a surprise to me, but then, so was the fact that Jean was pregnant,” Toby continued into the wave of skepticism. “That seemed to trigger the realization. Anyway, at that point I got stuck trying to keep things on an even keel and everybody happy – but we ran into Fernando.” He stopped, musing. “I don’t read guys’ minds, only girls’. It’s a sex-linked thing. I can’t explain it, but that’s the way it is. So, I didn’t realize about Fernando. We had to discover how bad he was the hard way. If we were to do it today, things would be different.”

“And why is that?” Damian wanted to know.

“Because I’m a telepath, too!” Amy declared. “I could have seen it, because I only read boys.”

“You guys...” Ron Parker waved the whole thing off in derision. “I’m supposed to believe this? What am I thinking, Honey?”

“You’re thinking you like Candace’s looks a lot more than mine – I’m too soft and pudgy for you!” Amy replied tartly. “And you might be surprised at Candace’s reaction if you did that to her nipples.”

Ron turned white. “JEEZUS!”

“Anybody else?” Toby asked calmly.

“How far does it go?” Lon asked.

“Well, technically, we don’t need blackmail material anymore,” Toby admitted, “because we apply a block against talking about the club to people who you don’t know are members. We ask first, but I’m sure nobody expects us to be able to do that kind of thing. The blackmail rule is still in force in case something happens and Amy or I dies or something; then you have continued protection. Besides, it gives you a reason to hang being unable to talk about things off of. I bet a bunch of you have suffered a sudden urge to hunt down Amy or me when you ran into trouble.” There were a bunch of surprised glances around at that. “It’s just, well, further evidence. What we’re telling you comes under full disclosure, I guess. People in this room all know, but you won’t be able to access that knowledge outside a meeting like this one, for everyone’s protection – especially Amy’s and mine.”

“What do you need US for?” Frank Parker rasped.

“Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely,” Toby replied. “Somebody besides Amy and me needs to look at what we’re doing and either ratify it or tell us to stop. We need a conscience, and we need to know that we’re not just dragging people here and there against their will.”

“Son, if you can put any thought in my head you want to, what good is it?” Poppa Frank Pendergast asked.

Toby grimaced. “That’s fair. But we’re aware of that and we avoid it when possible. We only apply the blocks because without them, an organization of this size would eventually collapse. Someone would talk, and a LOT of people would get hurt!”

“He’s right, you know,” Candace insisted. “We almost went under right away! Beth can’t keep a secret to save her life under a proper cross-examination. What if someone was to get mad or unhappy or whatever and try to bring us all down? Everybody in this room, with a couple of possible exceptions, has a skeleton in his or her closet. I could go to jail for a long time if the number of young guys I’ve had sex with came out – and everybody KNOWS they wanted it, too!”

“Okay, you got a point,” Poppa Frank muttered.

“He is correct,” Jiang Yi announced. “I myself had such thoughts, and was going to act on them to protect Sonya from the club. But I would have been wrong. Sonya is not injured by the club, and most of my problem was jealousy.” She eyed Poppa Frank sidelong. “That has also been taken care of, but I was a danger to the club. There will have been others.”

“We’re not the only ones with the gift,” Amy announced. “There are others. Some of them represent an external danger. Some do not. But we are not alone.” She paused. “Maybe we don’t HAVE to justify what we have done for the club’s protection, but we DO need to ratify the past and look to rules governing the future.”

“Back to Fernando Reyes,” Toby punched in. “I couldn’t tell he was paranoid, but I wasn’t the only one involved. In fact, I was more or less there to bat cleanup, so from a certain perspective, this was a club decision, brought on by his actions. Having seen everything, I agree with Doctor Rankin – Fernando was ALREADY over the edge and Marta and Maddie and Pietro were in serious danger of being killed THAT NIGHT!”

“I caused it,” Hank piped up. “I was so pissed at him for beating on Maddie that I called him at the bank and threatened him. That’s what set him off, and I think it is indicative of just how awful he was!”

“This is no doubt true,” Marta agreed, “but ... a woman?”

“Is that the issue?” Toby asked. “I see that it is. Marta, in his own eyes, he was never a man!”

“What if we ... pushed him?” Marta asked.

“What if we did? Marta, he’s better off!” Candace erupted. “He was headed for one of those crazy guy standoffs with the police after he killed all three of you! If being a woman makes him happy, at least he isn’t killing anyone!”

Marta sighed. “I see your point.”

“Let’s move on to other questionable projects,” Amy interjected. “Probably topping the list is Cindy and Beverly...”

“So, the club DID engineer that?” Frank Parker chuckled. “That was slick. It WAS Tyrone and Otis, right?”

“And three or four of their homeys,” Toby agreed.

“Tyrone has something, doesn’t he?” Lon interjected. “That’s why you were so sure it would work!”

“Yes,” Amy admitted. “We discovered it as a result of some work he did on Bernice, making her think she was a slut. The gang-bang at the camp was Tyrone and Otis, not Bernice. Otis has no powers, but he is aware of Tyrone’s and rides on them. Tyrone was clumsy, early on, but he is becoming more sophisticated, and careful. Currently, his only focus is Cindy, Beverly, and their families – and it is likely to stay that way. He and Otis have moved out of the gangsta crowd and are trying to become solid citizens, so they can keep them.”

Tina Bettinger frowned. “So, I’m in danger from Tyrone?”

“You WERE,” Toby replied. “There are a couple of things, here. In our limited experience, a new telepath makes mistakes early on, before he or she gets a grip on his or her powers and learns to be careful. If you think about it, you probably know a couple of black girls that used to run with Otis and Tyrone – and don’t, anymore.”

“Patty and Simone!” Tabitha supplied.

“Exactly,” Toby replied. “Bernice was on her way to being part of the stable, but that is now a dead project, and Patty and Simone are with other guys. This is the new Tyrone. You’re pretty safe, now, because he’s learned that it isn’t always a great idea to use his powers like that. Cindy and Beverly aren’t being handled anywhere near as heavy-handed as Patty and Simone – it looks like he did what it took to get them through the night, and then backed them way off. Patty and Simone probably need keepers, because he was pretty heavy-handed with them. It’s easy to do serious damage – you learn that pretty quickly.”

“Yeah, what they did to Cindy and Beverly, though...” Tina muttered.

“Come on! You can SEE the difference!” Damian scoffed. “They aren’t hurtin’!”

“Their reputations are destroyed,” Maddie pointed out.

“Which is a good thing!” Brenda erupted. “They were BAD and they trampled EVERYBODY!”

“Brenda is right,” Toby noted. “This WAS Cindy...” He and Amy collaborated to project the amalgam of the old Cindy to the group. There were a number of gasps of surprise – both at the content and the fact that he could do such a thing. “This is the NEW Cindy...” He presented a snapshot taken earlier in the day. “If you could dig around in there, you’d find that she isn’t a slave to Tyrone, but she IS in love. She’s actually pretty happy with her lot.”

“Enforced happiness,” Tina muttered.

Toby shook his head. “Not really. As I said, Tyrone is maturing as a telepath. One of the things you learn is that a little bit goes a long way. We think that Cindy could break out of this relationship if she wants to, but why should she? Tyrone is providing for her needs. And as has been pointed out, her reputation is shot, so she isn’t queen of all she surveys anymore – and she actually feels better about that. She has no reason to dump Tyrone for something better – arguably there is no such thing!”

“It was heavy-handed,” Tina pointed out.

“It needed doing!” Teela argued. “She was a viper! Look what she did to Anita – and basically got away with it!”

“Part of the intent was to get Tyrone under control,” Amy noted, “and that has ALSO worked. At this point, Tyrone is an ally, not an enemy – but he doesn’t know we exist.”

“Okay, whatever. What ELSE have you done?” Tina asked.

“Well, there is the ongoing Julio Vasquez project,” Amy replied. “Julio is legendary for ruining virgins, seducing them with his smooth Latin manner and then walking away after having barely started having sex with them, having gotten his. As it turns out, the issue was that he literally didn’t know any better. We paired him with Wanda Samuels’ big sister Kelly – who isn’t someone that Julio would ever mess with due to her size and looks, but who has the personality and the physical attributes required to handle him – and the results have been, well, hilarious, but really good. Julio turned Gina Blaisdale’s older sister Bethany into a real man-hater, back when they were in school together, and he fixed it this last weekend. Bethany is over blaming men for his actions and is at least thinking about forgiving Julio personally. Julio is basically off the market, and it looks like Kelly may end up with a permanent boyfriend. Julio’s ego has been hammered, which needed doing, too.”

“Who makes these decisions?” Jean erupted.

“You do, now,” Toby replied. “We’ve been going with the flow, looking for opportunities to fix things as they came, and we’ve been largely successful, even with Fernando. But there are clearly arguments that we shouldn’t be intervening in these things. Well, okay. Now there are seven of you who will pass on these projects. We won’t do anything if the Steering Committee thinks it is a bad idea.”

“Can’t you just ... manipulate us?” Jean Flanders pointed out. It was clear to her that Toby probably had, early on.

Toby addressed this directly. “A telepath that doesn’t know what he is or what he is doing can unconsciously influence things around him. Once you KNOW what you’re doing, there is a natural reticence. We didn’t really intervene with Julio and Kelly, until Kelly presented us with the problem that she herself caused by putting Julio and Bethany together. Then we only went as far as showing Julio what he had actually done, which swept away his disbelief. The club was probably successful because I unconsciously reduced your level of inhibitions that day ... but that was really ALL I did, and the results have been largely positive, haven’t they?” He eyed Coach, who was standing beside her.

Jean colored. “Yes, but...”

Toby shrugged. “It can’t be fixed. By now, it is ancient history. Life’s a bitch. We have to live with the results.”

“Isn’t this evidence that you shouldn’t EVER intervene?” Tina asked.

“Is it?” Amy asked. “If not, why were we granted this power in the first place? You can’t make it go away, and there are reasons for it to exist. We humans have put a lot of social limitations on ourselves – people can’t even get together anymore, for one reason or another that amounts to fear. Toby and I exist to facilitate. But power corrupts, so we want oversight. If you look at things, you’ll find that we really haven’t done that much except protect the rest of you. Even Cindy and Beverly were not products of our manipulations, though I admit we arranged it.”

“So, if Tina gets her way, The Bitch continues to fuck over guys forever without being punished. Is that what I’m hearing?” Clint Reed was red in the face.

“The Bitch?” Tina blinked.

“Clint’s mother,” Amy supplied, “Camilla Reed. She’s been a pending project for some time.”

“Why?” Tina asked.

“Because she’s a grifter and a con artist and has no regard for ANY man, including her own son!” Clint roared. “She must have ripped off a couple of thousand guys in her time, and she gets away with it one hundred percent of the time! She’s a criminal!”

“She’s your mother,” Jean pointed out.

“Yeah. Fat lot of good THAT did me!” Clint snarled.

“This is Clint’s perception of what we’re dealing with,” Amy announced, pulling the gestalt from Clint’s mind. Toby, holding hands with her, passed it to the females in the audience. There was a five second silence while the damage she had done Clint, in particular, was absorbed, then murmurs. Clint got a lot of sympathetic looks.

“Okay, this seems to be pretty convincing, but it is still Clint,” Jean offered, in a measured response. “It isn’t Camilla. Clearly, she was no mother to Clint, and it certainly appears that she is a con artist, among other things, but I think we should get a more direct impression.”

Poppa Frank rubbed his jaw. “I’d do her on general principles, but Jean is probably right. We need to know what we’re getting into. Y’all need to do a direct recon. We can’t decide based on this.”

“B-but...” Clint blustered.

“Y’all got my vote anyway, son,” Poppa Frank soothed him. “This is about seein’ how bad it is and about ways and means.”

“What does Clint want?” Tina asked.
