Janet’s dad Dan had been an decent happy sort of guy at heart.

Well, at least he’d married Margot, the girl he’d put in the family way: even though it had been a sort of shotgun wedding; which says something for his honour.

And there was some patriotism there too; ‘cause after a few years after becoming a Dad, he’d responded to his country’s call; to serve as a soldier in the war; along with his best work-mate Micky.

In fact the war beconed him as a wild adventure abroad; a way of escaping being cooped-up with his miserable spouse and the kid.

And Dan did have quite a nice war with his mates; somewhere in the hot and cold deserts of north Africa. But he’d seen little action; which was just luck really; because one of his mates had been killed from a single bomb blast at base camp while at the same time he and Micky had been in a nearby Arab bordello watching a special show.
