Chapter 3

The next morning, sleep had done little to ease my thoughts. Even a cold shower had failed to wash away the remnants of last night’s temptation. I had dressed quickly, skipping coffee in favour of getting to the office early.

By some stroke of luck, I made it in record time. Before heading in, I stopped by the small café down the block, craving the bite of espresso to jolt my system awake.

But when I stepped up to the counter, my body went rigid.

Monique stood behind it.

She wore a simple black dress, the apron tied snugly around her waist. Her dark curls were pulled into a loose ponytail, a few stray tendrils framing her delicate face. When she saw me, a slow, knowing smile spread across her lips.

“Good morning, John,” she purred. “It’s so nice to see you.”

I stood frozen, my mind scrambling for words.

Her eyes glimmered with mischief. “I hope you slept well.”

I swallowed, suddenly aware of how dry my throat had become. “Monique...”

She giggled. “What can I get for you?”

I forced my brain to function, ordering a croissant and a coffee.

She turned, hips swaying ever so slightly as she walked to the espresso machine. My gaze followed her, helpless against the pull. When she glanced back over her shoulder, her smirk deepened. She knew exactly what she was doing.

Monique placed my drink in front of me, her fingers grazing mine as I reached for it. The touch sent a jolt of electricity up my arm.

As I turned to leave, she leaned in just slightly and murmured, “I’ll see you tonight, John.”

I nearly stumbled.

Behind me, she laughed.
