Travis---I talked with Cholo and told him his ‘problem’ was over and he could fly back to the capital tonight.
“If it is all the same to you, I would like to stay here and work on the ranch. Travis, I owe you and Vaquero my thanks. You guys stuck your hand in the fire for me and I will never be able to repay you. If you need anything anytime just ask.”
I shook his hand and said he did not owe us anything. Jane appeared in the doorway, and he went to her. I could not hear what they were saying but she looked excited as they walked away.
“What are we going to do with the airplane?”
“Chip and Adriana are on the way. We need to get ready to go back.”
We packed up what little we brought with us and were waiting when the Porter arrived.
Chip had news, “I talked to John O’Malley this morning. I am to fly this plane back to the capital, alone. You and Vaquero fly home with Adriana. He told me to tell you to be sure to watch the news tonight.”
We hugged and kissed everyone then flew home with Adriana. Chip flew back to the capital in Lasso’s plane.
At 6 pm Ana and I were at the house watching the big screen television when the news came on. Between the two newscasters there were no smiles as they started with the top story of the day.
“Today arrest warrants were issued for Victor Lasso, owner of Lasso Mining, and for his head of security, Diana Morales, a former member of the National Police. They are accused of killing Manuel and Victoria Mendez whose bodies were found in an alley 3 months ago after meeting with Lasso at his office here in the capital. The evidence shows that the Mendez’ did not want to sell their land but Lasso would not take no for an answer. He planned on buying it from their estate.
Their murderous acts in the alley were witnessed by a young man who told police what he saw and heard. He was placed in protective custody by O’Malley Security and testified before the grand jury yesterday. Arrests warrants were issued. The two are still at large this evening. It is believed that they are lovers and have left the country when it was leaked that the investigation was going to end with their indictments. The bank accounts of Lasso Mining are empty and the company has ceased all operations as of this afternoon. It looks like a trustee will be appointed. Interpol has been alerted.”
When they started to talk about what was going on with the war in Venezuela, I cut it off. Been there, done that, have the T-shirt and the scar.
“Did Cholo testify?”
“Of course not.”
“What happened to the money?”
“Don’t know if that is true either.”
“But the company is shut down?”
