The twins didn’t want to eat breakfast, but continue to play with their new toys. Their mother, aunt, aunty, and grandmother tried to force them to sit down and eat a decent breakfast. Instead, they sat in their chairs and pouted and whispered to each other when they were sure they couldn’t be heard. They appealed to Grandma Heather for support, but she sided with the other adults.
Finally, Poppa, Grandpa, Uncle John and Mr. Gus came in from the garage talking about horses and power and ponies, and they all agreed with mom too. Life isn’t fair when you’re five and small. But poppa got up and made little pancakes that he called silver dollar pancakes, but they weren’t silver, they were regular pancake color, and they were good! They even had Princess syrup that was red and delicious! The twins ate them up and were back at their toys in no time. Madeline even ate her bacon.
“How do you do it?” asked Andi.
“Little pancakes for little girls – it works every time. And that syrup is a Buffalo original: loganberry. And if they turned up their noses, I would have given them “Princess Toast.”
“What’s that?”
“I just cut the silver dollar pancakes square.”
With a wave of her fingers, she beckoned Paul over and she reached up and gave him a kiss. “How do you know these things?”
“I’m willing to assume,” started John, “That my brother learned a thing or two teaching Children’s Church for the past couple of years.”
“You may be right, little brother, and I do learn a lot there. But then, I have been making those lovebugs breakfast for a couple of weeks, their tastes haven’t changed any.” Far off in the house could be heard:
“Bug bug.”
“Bug bug.”
“Little kids have really good hearing.”
