“What’s up?” I answered my phone.
“Hey,” Rhia said on the other end of the line. “Are you busy?”
“Not dramatically,” I said, minimizing the graphic I’d been working on for the local AAA hockey team. They wanted a refresh of their graphics for the jumbotron screen before their next season and had thankfully come to me earlier than the week before the opening game this year. “What can I do for my favourite- Well, shit, I guess it’s not fair if I say ‘favourite college coed’ anymore, is it?”
“How about ‘favourite brunette coed?’” Rhia said, and I could hear the grin on her lips. “That way Elyse can be your Blonde and Tori can be your ... Well, black doesn’t work. Raven? Noir? Why isn’t there a term like brunette and blonde for black hair?”
“Don’t ask me, darlin’,” I said. “I just speak the words, I don’t make ‘em up.” I could feel her rolling her eyes at me over the phone - she’d done a lot of growing up, but she hadn’t lost that teenage tendency yet. Then again, neither had her Mother.
“Well, as your favourite brunette college coed, I just wanted to call and say that from now on you have my permission to tell my Mom about what happens in our game,” Rhia said.
“Oh,” I said. It was a Monday and I’d seen Mel twice for coffee since the last session, and that second time she hadn’t brought it up at all. “Are you ... sure about that?”
