Grovemoor Manor Estate in the heart of England consisted of 900 acres of land, farms, and forests. It even included part of the local village that was also called Grovemoor, after the estate. Like most English country houses, the housekeeper was in charge of the main house. In this case, it was Mrs Dobbs. A middle-aged lady who knew and understood about running a large country house and the other parts of the estate. Lady Katherine Middleton owned the entire estate.

Mrs. Dobbs had arranged her weekly meeting with Lady Middleton in the library. They discussed the household accounts and any other business that might require an executive decision from Lady Middleton herself.

‘I have two final things to show you, ma’am.’ Mrs Dobbs said.

‘Yes, what is it?’

Mrs Dobbs took out two magazines, opened the first one, English Country Life, and pointed out a small article about the Grovemoor Estate.

‘Our head gardener is to be appointed as a judge at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, ma’am.’

‘Really! How wonderful.’ Lady Middleton exclaimed with pride that her country house was mentioned in the magazine.

‘I also have this to show you, ma’am.’

Mrs. Dobbs took out the second magazine. The Lady Magazine. She opened it up to a page with many advertisements from various people seeking jobs and appointments as staff, servants and housekeepers at country houses.

‘I have marked this one for you ma’am.’ Mrs Dobb pointed out one advertisement, circled with red marker pen.’

‘You have often said that you were looking for a little project, someone to train up and add to the household staff. When I read that, I thought that would interest you.’ Mrs Dobbs explained her reason for showing the magazine to Lady Middleton.

‘Interesting choice. Would she be the right sort of person? I always insist that we have the right sort of people working for me, Mrs Dobbs, you know that, don’t you.’

‘I have already sent a reply and have a letter for you to read. I think that you will find that this girl would be as near as perfect for you.’

Mrs Dobbs handed over the letter.

Lady Middleton read the letter and agreed with Mrs Dobbs that the girl sounded perfect.

‘Arrange an interview with her, bring her to the house, and we can both see if she is the right sort we need.’

‘Yes, ma’am.’

Friday. Miss Susan Clarke arrived at the local train station and was picked up by a taxi arranged by Mrs Dobbs to bring her directly to Grovemoor Manor. She was a tall girl, a redhead with bright green eyes and a pleasing look about her. She was nervous and looked at the surrounding countryside and Grovemoor Estate, trying to take it all in.

The interview took place in the library. Lady Middleton and Mrs Dobbs asked questions, and Miss Clarke answered them as best as she could. She was nervous answering the questions, and she was clearly a good person to join the household as a companion for Lady Middleton.

‘Well, I think we can say that you have passed with flying colours, Miss Clarke.’ Lady Middleton told her.

‘We have arranged for you to stay for the weekend here in the house. Think of it as a reward for passing the interview.’ Said, Mrs Dobbs.

‘Thank you very much.’ Miss Clarke replied, smiling excitedly.

And so the first part of the seduction of Miss Susan Clarke was put in place. She was to join the household of Grovemoor Manor as a companion for Lady Katherine Middleton.
