A yacht trip was the most popular choice and I agreed.
The airline company we had used CS&S also did fishing tours, along with yacht and sailboat trips. After checking into this we discovered that we could lease or pay for a sailboat trip from Florida to either Europe or Hawaii and a crew to handle the boat would be provided.
We decided to hire a small if you consider a 65 foot sailboat small.
The crew consisted of six, four males and two females.
The main captain was Brian Mack he had been injured while on shore leave, he was coming back onto the base at the main gate when rockets and mortars hit. He got blown up but not killed just serious enough to end his career, he had been a captain of a cruiser. So after a lots of months of surgeries and rehab he was finally able to get his civilian captain’s license for just about anything on water.
The second guy was Barry Mack the younger brother, who retired 11 days after he hit his 20 years. He had put in his retirement as soon as he could to retire at 20 years, it took 11 days to out process from the Navy after his retirement was approved. He had just made captain a couple of years prior and ended up retired as a commander instead of captain since he did not have enough years as a captain. He too was able to get a civilian captain’s license for just about anything on water also.
The third male was Donald ‘Don’ Detmeyer a Navy Honorably discharged enlisted with 6 years of experience on ships.
The fourth male was Lou Alkon a medically retired SEAL that got injured bad enough that he could no longer meet SEAL requirements but now uses those skills as primary protection on cruises. (you don’t have to move very fast to get very far on any of the cruise ships).
The first female was a reserve coast guard officer. Brandi Mack YES the younger sister was a lieutenant commander in the coast guard and currently had a captain’s 200 Ton Master with Auxiliary Sail and Assistance Towing Endorsements.
The second female Trudi McGrath was a Trauma/ObGyn/Surgeon that had just left the Navy after 12 years. She was tired of military way of doing things interfering with the medical way of doing things.
The three siblings got together after Brian was injured and decided to get together as they have and work together as they are. Doctor McGrath just happened to be assigned as the medical person for this trip. They have worked together on several different cruises and have a great working relationship.
I was very impressed with the credentials and experience this crew has.
We had decided to go to Hawaii through the Panama Canal it would take about three weeks sailing from Florida to Hawaii.
When we explained our training and got approval to bring our own firepower the crew as just as impressed with us as we were with them.
We sailed out early the next morning and enjoyed the rocking of the boat as we glided through the waves. I was impressed with the way the sailboat handled the heavy waves without tossing us around. The crew asked if we wanted to anchor at night or sail straight through to the canal. The vote was sail straight through. This would take us about two weeks something like 15-17 days.
The weather was with us and we managed to reach the Panama coast in 14 days just as the sun was setting. We found a port that could support our sailboat and made arrangements to pass through the canal, we had to wait for a group of small boats to go through at the same time and were lucky to only have to wait one day. The sailboat had the waste tank flushed, emergency water topped off, fuel topped off and basic supplies restocked. We also got to do some local site seeing.
The first night out we ended up establishing that our group was NOT a soft target, in fact it was demonstrated that our group was lethally able to protect ourselves. Sadly, several locals thought they could persuade my girls to party with them. Even when my girls politely expressed NO desired to have anything to do with them. They insisted to the point of one dumbass picking Te up and throwing her over his shoulder to carry her away.
When Ki kicked the dumbass in the balls dropping him to his hands and knees allowing Te back on her feet. Three others stood and moved to get involved.
Lou made the attempt to deescalate the situation by offering to buy all the guys a round and was backhanded by their obvious leader. For supposedly being unfit for the SEALs Lou effectively spun with the slap and hit the guy with a backhanded fist that knocked him out cold. He was unconscious so fast that he was still standing so Lou moved him to a chair. I guess once a SEAL always a SEAL.
Everyone stopped to watch as Lou put the 6’ or very close to that height guy into a chair and adjusted him to keep him from falling out of the chair finally leaning him on the table next to the chair.
Then two even dumber jackasses pulled knives. Dove moved so fast the first guy was looking at his knife hand holding his knife which was now stuck in his chest probably into his heart from the look of the location. Dove was just standing next to him.
