Austin was out riding Red when his phone rang. He didn’t recognize the number, so he assumed it was spam and was ready to reject and block it, but on a whim, he answered.
“Hello.”
Preparing to tell the caller to pound sand, he heard, “Is this Austin?”
“Yes.”
“This is Sandy Dupont, calling for Mr. Grady. He asked me to follow up and confirm your interest in working on Redemption Creek.”
“As much as I appreciate his offer, I think it best that I back out of that,” Austin said.
“Tim said you might want to, since you and Keri are on the outs. But he wanted to assure you she’d talked to him and wouldn’t cause any more trouble. I must ask that you reconsider,” Sandy said.
Austin thought for a moment and made a quick decision.
“I have a better option for you: my father, Clay. He grew up in Montana, herding cattle and taking care of horses. He currently works at a dude ranch in Texas, and his wife makes all the meals for the guests. I suggest you call them and offer him the consulting and horse-care job, and consider my stepmom for feeding the cast and crew. He’s more of an expert than I am, and I can vouch for her cooking.”
“I see. Well, I’ll talk to Tim and see what he wants to do. Can you give me your dad’s number in case Tim decides he wants to use them instead?”
Austin did so and then hung up. That seemed like the right thing to do. Austin and Keri would never get back together since he didn’t feel he could trust her.
He glanced at his phone and noticed the time.
“Red, we need to head back. I have to meet the new stable hand,” Austin said as he nudged Red into a trot.
Austin rode up just as Miss Sandy got out of her pickup.
“Howdy, ma’am,” Austin said and tipped his cap.
“When you do stuff like that, I can actually see you out on the range, herding cattle.”
“Are you ready to meet the horses and get to work?” Austin asked as he dismounted Red.
“Sure. Why don’t you show me around?”
As Austin led Red into the stable, his phone rang again. This time, he recognized the number.
“Please take care of Red while I take this,” Austin said, then answered.
“Hello, Mother,” Austin said.
“Hello, son. Charlie asked me to call and see if you and Emma would like to go out to dinner with us.”
“I’ll ask her and get back to you. When did you want to do this?” Austin asked.
“Tonight. I can swing by and pick you up at five,” Marie said.
“Okay, I’ll let you know. Sorry, but I have to go. I’m breaking in our new stable hand,” Austin said.
“Tell Miss Sandy I said not to let you boss her around.”
“I’ll probably forget to do that,” Austin said and hung up.
Welp, it probably had to happen: Austin got kicked out of Club DTF.
Oliver was the one with a problem. Austin wasn’t pulling in new talent, and Emma and Steph refused to participate in the festivities anymore. With no new women, and without Steph to help kick off the parties, it turned into a typical gathering where Oliver had to work to get into a girl’s pants. Liam, Peter, and Lawrence all went along with Oliver’s edict to try to save the club.
In the end, Liam told Austin that, for the remaining girls, the novelty wore off quickly, and they quit coming around.
The final straw came when they announced a gathering, and only the guys showed up. Peter said when it turned out to be just a sausage party, Liam announced he was done. He said he’d have better luck going out and getting a girlfriend like Austin had. That set off Oliver, and now Peter thought they were no longer friends. Club DTF imploded.
Emma had moved out of the fourplex and in with Austin when they became a couple. With Austin’s mom moving back to her home, his grandmother turned a blind eye to Austin and Emma sharing his room. Grandma acted like Emma was simply working 24/7.
