Austin came down for breakfast and discovered everyone had plans for the day. His stepmom and stepsisters were going to DC to play tourist while his mom and dad went horse shopping. Austin had his Western riding class and then Keri and her assistant in the afternoon.
He headed to the barn to saddle the horses and found Simone waiting for him.
“My parents will be back tonight,” Simone said. “Why don’t you come by beforehand?”
“Parents are sneaky. I would bet they either show up early or have someone keeping an eye on the house.”
“Now that you mention it, they might. Shea’s mom has stopped by a couple of times to check on me,” Simone admitted.
“Your dad would hunt me down and send you to an all-girls school if he caught us again.”
“We need to find somewhere we can have some fun.”
“We could go to Emma’s this weekend. Do you think you can get away?” Austin asked.
“Let me work on it. I’ll send you a message if I can,” Simone said, then looked at her phone. “I should get home before anyone else gets here. It’s a small town, and if I’m found with you, I’m sure someone will say something, and my parents will get wind of it.”
“Let me know,” Austin said and kissed Simone goodbye.
She departed, leaving Austin to his own thoughts. Could Simone be someone he would want to date, or was she just a bit of fun?
Keri had arranged for Austin and Miss Sandy to join her and Grace for lunch before their riding lesson. She’d bought a new cowboy hat and boots because Austin had made an offhand comment about the movie. He’d asked if it was a romantic comedy or something more serious. It made her realize he was gently saying she looked silly in her new gear.
Today, she’d matched his style. She’d even purchased a flannel shirt. Grace assured her she looked like a real cowgirl now.
When Keri and Grace arrived at the Blackwater Riding Club, they found the parking lot packed. They made their way to the arena, where they found Austin teaching his Western riding class while a crowd looked on.
“What’s going on?” Keri asked.
“I have no idea, but I’ll find out,” Grace said.
Keri watched Austin teaching his class how to use a rope.
“Remember that you and your horse are a team. The key to success is the way you sit your horse. You should be sitting upright and keeping your body straight. When you’re approaching the target, you’ll want to be in a forward position so you can rise out of the saddle for the release,” Austin said as he demonstrated.
The class giggled when he roped one of the teen boys.
“While others are getting their turn, I want you to practice. Learn how the rope feels when you swing it. Does it feel right? Are you swinging too much? Too little? Try different ways until it feels right for you,” Austin said.
He rode Red to the middle of the arena and called out each student in turn to try their hand at roping. Each would ride slowly up and attempt to rope Austin or Red.
“That’s a good horse,” a boy Keri’s age said.
“Why do you say that?” she asked.
“Almost all horses shy away when you swing a rope around them, but Austin’s calmly holds still. My sister says it’s because the horse trusts Austin. Plus, he’s a Friesian. They were bred as warhorses, so they don’t spook easily.”
She saw what he meant when one of the young girls hit Red in the nose with her lasso. The big horse only shook his head in reaction, and Austin reached down and patted Red’s neck.
“You’re the actor my sister’s teaching to ride.”
“Miss Sandy?” Keri asked.
“That’s her. I’m Kyle.”
“Nice to meet you, Kyle. I’m Keri.”
“I still watch reruns of your TV show. What was your favorite thing to do on it?”
Keri had been asked something similar a thousand times.
“The music videos. It was fast-paced, and we got to dance.”
“What kind of music do you like?” Kyle asked.
“I like all kinds. I like variety. What kind do you like?”
“Regular stuff.”
Keri thought that was a strange answer, so she didn’t press him. He seemed a bit odd, so she was glad when Grace showed up.
“They’re having steeplechase races this weekend. There’s supposed to be a professional one on Sunday. Today and tomorrow, amateurs will race. That’s what the crowd’s here for; they just stopped to watch Austin’s class between events.”
Some people recognized her and asked for pictures to be taken. Grace stopped it when a crowd began to form and took her inside the club.
Austin put Red into a stall in the club’s stables. He praised his horse for being a good boy and letting his class throw ropes at him. Austin put some oats into his feeder and gave him a bucket of fresh water, appeasing Red.
Keri had invited him and Miss Sandy to lunch before their class, so he headed off to the dining room. Mrs. Draper volunteered to lead the Western beginners back to his grandmother’s and make sure they took care of their horses so he didn’t have to make the trip.
Miss Sandy found him closing Red’s stall. She had Kyle with her.
“A guy goes to the doctor and tells him his bottom hurts,” he said.
“The doctor asks, ‘Where exactly is the pain?’”
“Right at the entrance.”
“The doctor says, ‘It won’t hurt anymore when you call it something else,’” Kyle said.
“Nice,” Austin said with a straight face.
“I wanted to ask if it would be okay if Kyle joined us for lunch with Keri. But after that, I’m not so sure,” Miss Sandy said.
“I’ll be good. I promise,” Kyle said. “Besides, I already met her, and she talked to me.”
“Okay. I’ll ask Keri, but don’t make a scene if she says ‘no,’” Miss Sandy said to her brother.
They found Keri and Grace waiting for a table.
“They said it’ll be fifteen minutes,” Keri said.
“Let’s kill some time. My grandmother enjoys name-dropping with her friends. Why don’t we find her so she can show you off?” Austin asked.
“I’d like that,” Keri said, hooking her arm into Austin’s. She turned to Grace. “Maybe you can keep Miss Sandy and Kyle company while we do that.”
Austin took Keri to the sitting room where his grandmother’s group played bridge. As they walked through the club, he realized all eyes were on them. He’d grown somewhat used to that because he stood out in his cowboy garb while everyone else was dressed normally or in English riding apparel.
But this scrutiny was on another level. Instead of the occasional curious glance, people were gawking.
