Chapter 4: Remington

Suspense Sex Story: Chapter 4: Remington - Whelp, this was an unfortunate twist of fate. To have to turn around and ask for help from a man I left broken years ago was not my ideal Wednesday night plans but, unfortunately, I've run out of better options. Broken myself, and bleeding, I need to get away from the men chasing me because these assholes are shooting to kill. I am Katerina and, beware men, I am coming in like a hurricane. Be prepared or get swept away.

I, for once, struggled to keep still in my chair. I kept finding my leg twitching or my hand gripping the arm of the chair and having to make a conscious effort to relax. The doctors told me that I would need to wait in the family room and had a nurse lead me here. As we walked, she explained the procedures that they would have to do to Kat. I already knew it but I stayed quiet and tried to let her words reassure me. They didn’t.

When we reached the door of the room, she motioned me in and the followed in behind. At first, I was surprised but then I remembered the regulation for gunshot wounds. ‘ah. Protocol speech.’

“Now, sir, because Ms. Pavlov was shot, we do need to report this to the police. She was awake and cognizant so we were able to speak with her but, as she is going to be under anesthesia for her surgery, the police are likely going to need to talk to you as the next best thing. If you need an advocate, we can provide one and if you need to speak to our trauma councilor, we can get her down here as well.” I shook my head at that.

“No thank you, Nurse...” I paused here and glanced at her name tag “Carlos. My friend is a member of the officers investigating the shooting. He should be here in just a little while.” she nodded then looked me in the eye while she placed her hand over mine. Her look was one of sincere concern so I didn’t pull away.

“Would you still like for me to call the trauma councilor? She is an amazing listener and she has a lot of resources that can help you during this difficult time.” I open my mouth to turn down this offer as well but then I heard Kat’s voice in my head, the ghost of a memory from long ago.

‘It’s really unfortunate how many men just don’t get the help that they need. It isn’t even their fault a lot of the time. They’re told from birth to suck it up and as a result, suicide rates are so much higher in men. And those that don’t kill themselves purposefully are still at higher risks for death from things like heart disease.’ She looked directly at me and the look in her eyes, the tone of her voice, told me this wasn’t just idle chatter or one of her political conversations. She was worried about me.

I blinked the memory away then sighed softly. I felt like I couldn’t look at the nurse fully so I looked at her chin instead. This was a tactic that I learned during my days in the team with Bruce that allowed me to focus on a target without letting myself get too focused on them being a person, while still giving the illusion that I was looking them in the eye. “Yeah, I’d like to talk to her but not right now. I can’t leave Kat right now.” The nurse nodded then her phone buzzed. She looked down at it and sighed. “The cops are here.”

She looked up at me in surprise then nodded. “They should be up in just a handful of minutes. Are you sure you don’t want me to stay”

“I’m fine. You’ve already done enough. Thank you.” She nodded and stood up. She turned to leave but stopped herself. “ I don’t mean to pry but...”

“Then don’t. Thank you, Nurse Carlos,” I watched as her face flushed but she nodded to herself and made a hasty exit. I knew that was rude but I was already about to be grilled by my best friend. I didn’t like the thought of anyone else prying into me today.

I shut my eyes and leaned my head back against the wall while I waited for my friend. Time seemed to move at a snails pace and I had to take slow, deep breaths to keep myself calm as I waited for something to happen. It was torture but I held as still as I could, calling on my training to be a living statue, to conserve my energy until i could place it somewhere. Until I could strike.

I breathed slow, in and out, focusing only on that until the adrenaline could start to work its way out of my system. I pushed out the image of Kat’s blood covered clothes. I pushed out the fear and the fury that crashed through me at her grayed skin and harsh breathing. I breathed, slow and deep, until i was floating within myself. From there, my conscious observance moved outward, leaving my emotions and thoughts inward. I felt the rough plastic based furniture covering through my shirt, the wood grain beneath my hand and the rough carpet under my shoes.

I smelled the cleaners and hand sanitizers and perfumes left behind by other occupants. Under that was the smell so familiar to people because it was so singular. Hospital. The scent of so many strangers, sick or injured or dead, mixed with those that struggled to help them. Hand soaps and antiseptic wipes and perfume-free detergents. I was grateful the other, more bodily, scents were not coming through in here. If i had caught the whiff of blood, I likely would have had another attack.

It was in that state that I heard them enter. Their belts jingling with all sorts of trinkets, from handcuffs to pepper spray to a gun. Bruce had finally arrived with his partner Tonya. I felt them stop a few feet from me, heard Tonya open her mouth then close it after a head shake from my friend. Knowing him had certainly gained me some courtesies not afforded to most.

I opened my eyes and nodded to Bruce. He took that as his cue and sat down across from me while Tonya huffed and leaned her ass against the arm of the chair. “ Alright I guess I’ll start this shindig. Starting from the beginning, tell us your version of what happened.” I sat up straighter and closed my eyes again, finally allowing my memories to assail me as they had been trying to do since Kat was wheeled away. “ Starting with the gunshots.” It wasn’t a question but Tonya answered anyway, as she always did. Meanwhile Bruce just watched me which was new. “Yes, start from as early as you think is relevant” I nodded and pulled in the memories. I had been sitting at my desk, finishing up some quotes for training sessions that I was being asked to give at the local medical school as well as one for the counties shooting range. While not my main source of income, those classes helped keep food in my fridge and gas in my generator. Then I heard two or three muffed cracks through the wind. I knew they were gunshots but the shot was too far out to know what type. It wasn’t unusual to have gunfire in the area due to it being a place full of elk but I didn’t like that it was so late in the day.
