The following morning was pretty routine, except that Ellie was still upset.
“Sweetie, after your cereal, I need you to go play in your room while Daniel and I have a talk.”
“Mommy, you’re not sending Daniel away, are you?”
“No, sweetie. He stays. Your father didn’t tell you that, did he?”
“Well ... Not exactly.”
“Stephanie, this is MY house, and Daniel stays.”
In an inspired bit of mothering, Ellie stomped her foot to emphasize her point. It had the desired effect, and her little smile returned.
“Good.”
She left, and Ellie turned toward me, and her mask of control slipped and her anger showed.
“Damn him to hell; he upset her, just because he’s stupid and jealous. I’m really starting to hate him.”
“I guess the obvious question is, why did you marry him?”
“I’d like to pretend that I don’t remember, but that would be a lie. You probably saw that he’s, well, he’s not ugly. And he was a doctor, finishing up his pathology fellowship. He didn’t show the traits he has now at first. By that, I mean his coldness and abrupt behavior. After we were married, he seemed to shut down.
“Except for sex, he didn’t show me much affection or interest. Then, I had a difficult pregnancy with complications. Not the barfing, but issues of blood pressure and diabetes.”
“And he’s a doctor.”
“Exactly. I felt like I was on my own. He did show up for the labor and delivery, then held his baby for about five minutes and then went back to work. When Sparkle was 14 months, I filed for divorce. He left, and six months later the dissolution was complete.”
“I think, Ellie, you’re holding something back. What is it?”
“Shit. Daniel, he was my first. I was a virgin, and he seduced me. And, for all his faults, he blew me away. I had my first complete orgasm with him, and every time thereafter. I thought he was a sexual hero until I met you.
“But as my belly swelled, he lost interest. The last time I had sex with him, I was about 20 weeks; that’s only halfway through my pregnancy. It’s a terrible feeling to be constantly rejected.”
“I was right the first time. Ellie, he’s an idiot, no matter how many years he went to school—an idiot and a fool. Listen to me, gorgeous, I admit to seeing the effects from your pregnancy on your body. You know, they say stretch marks are actually tiger stripes. I would have been all over you throughout your pregnancy. Afterwards, I’d ask to taste your breast milk. I bet it was sweet, like the rest of you.”
“Holy shit, Daniel, you’re hard. Why?”
“I was imagining you pregnant—your big belly under swollen breasts with dark nipples. I’d be rubbing soothing lotion all over you while you rested in bed. I wish I could do that for you now.”
“Oh, God. Sweetie, we have to wait until tonight when Sparkle goes to sleep. And then I’m going to fuck you very much.”
Just before lunch, I got a phone call. My friends Lena and Lou Jackson were going to join us for dinner, along with his uncle Benny. When I told Ellie, she had a huge smile. Having actual guests was a nice break for her instead of just being cooped up in her house with me and her daughter.
Even better, Lena was bringing the food: Mexican dishes with some non-spicy options for the little one. I swear, she could make something tasty out of almost anything. Whenever I saw her put on her golden apron, I started salivating.
A couple of hours before they arrived, I slithered off Ellie’s big bed. Putting my weight on my good leg, I lowered my body into my wheelchair. Before dinner, I wanted to spend some time with Sparkle in her own room.
This was a big treat for her because I could meet her entire menagerie of stuffed animals, including her newest, a smiling lion she named Daniel (of course). Then, there were the toys.
Sparkle surprised me with her collection of Hot Wheels, a gift from an uncle a few states away. She would put one car in each hand, make little growling engine noises, and then roll them into each other at high speed.
“Why are you crashing your cars, Sparkle?”
“Because when I do this, nobody gets hurt. Cars crash all the time out there, but people get out and walk away. The guy who hit us, he did that. Daniel, I’m so sorry you got hurt.”
Yup. Down there on the floor along with the tiny cars were pieces of my heart.
“The very best thing I ever did in my whole life was to save you and your mom, Sparkle. My hands will heal up soon but I will never forget you as long as I live.”
It was hard to speak; I was choked up. She put down her cars and wrapped her little arms around my neck.
Without being asked, she cleaned up the floor so her mother wouldn’t step on the little cars. Then, it was time for her books. Along with Dr. Seuss, she had some more age-appropriate titles. Then she showed me a book that was perfect for tonight: Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin.
“Sit on your bed, and I will read this one to you.”
After dinner and dessert, Lou migrated to the kitchen for the washing up. Sparkle heard there was a boring adult meeting and fled to her bedroom. Lou’s uncle Benny had a lot of information for us.
“Ellie, I’m still negotiating with the Cadillac’s driver and his insurance. As far as the insurer is concerned, they’re going to pay his coverage limit and drop out. That’s $250 thousand. I’m going after him personally because he’s wealthy; I think he’ll be paying us about the same amount. Toyota is offering $50 thousand if you agree to keep quiet, because your RAV4 turned into a fireball for no acceptable reason.”
As he went on, it became clear to me that I was going to come out of this mess with a substantial amount of money, along with Ellie and Sparkle, of course. Out of that, of course, I had to reimburse Benny, the Jacksons, Lena and Lou, and so on.
Mom’s, I mean, my house was almost repaired. After healing, I had to decide: move back in or stay with Ellie? I wanted to stay, but I felt inhibited about asking her. If she decided to keep me, I could either rent out or sell the house. She shot a smile at me, which instantly made me feel better, reassured that I would still be welcome to stay with her.
“Guess you won’t be needing us anymore,” said Lena.
“Oh, my God! Don’t say that! You can’t think I would forget what you and Lou have done for me. I had a job when I was out driving and saw the accident happen. I felt so hopeless before you took me under your wings. I wish my hands would heal so I can hug you properly.”
“Oh, hell, Daniel, hug me improperly!”
While we embraced each other, Lena whispered in my ear.
“And when you’re better, you can grope me improperly. I know you want to.”
Ellie and Lou, both smirking at me must have guessed what she whispered. At least I was seated, so there was no visual evidence, but they both knew about those months I was living in the Jackson’s house before the accident.
What’s that, you say? Something you want to confess? About Lena? Wasn’t she like your mother?
It was weird being harangued by my internal monologue. I need to go backwards again to explain.
