After President Richard M. Nixon announced that he would resign on Friday, I turned off the television. Billie and Mae shooed our children upstairs for their baths. Gem and I sat in the living room staring at the blank screen.
“That’s three coups in less than twelve years,” Gem observed. “They’ve been mostly peaceful. I wonder who we’ll have to kill this time?”
“Vice President Gerald Ford was on the Warren Commission. He did better than Representative Hale Boggs--that 1972 plane crash in Alaska took the Democratic Party House Majority Leader out of the picture along with three other politicians. Senator Richard Brevard Russell Jr. died in January 1971. I’m surprised that John Cooper is still alive after publicly disagreeing with the conclusions of the Warren Commission.”
“There’s still time,” Gem commented.
“Earl Warren died last month. Allen Dulles died in 1969.”
“They were old men,” Gem told me. “It was their time.”
“John McCloy is still alive and he’s older than dirt. John Cooper and Gerald Ford--that’s a 43% survival rate in a benign environment.”
