Inside my cabin, Laura was waiting for me along with my parents.
“I’m just trying to catch up, Ace. Why are you the only one here wearing shorts?”
I gave her the same explanation I’d given others.
“You’re not having sex? Not even with me?”
“Laura, I need to clear the air and be absolutely direct. I’m particularly not having sex with you. That’s in the past now. The truth is what happened between us in the months before we arrived here has caused a lot of problems for me.”
Laura frowned.
“I don’t understand.”

I shook my head.
“No, Laura. That’s not it. I needed to face reality. What ruptured you and I for good is when you tried, days later, to manage me. I can’t forget what you said: ‘I have the ultimate tool of control, my pussy.’ I refuse to go back to those days where you dominate me by using sex. I’m moving past that. I deserve better.”
“But I was only teasing!”
“Laura, you might not have thought so, but you picked at a scab.”

“Don’t fool yourself. Tina has withdrawn from me and we might never repair our relationship. Even so, I’m not coming back to you. Not ever.”
“But I’m only here because your parents invited me. What happens next?”

“Friendly? How about you take off those stupid shorts and have me once more for old time’s sake?”
“Sorry. No.”
I went up to the cabin’s loft and relayed the gist of our conversation to my parents. Then I left the cabin so Laura could talk with them.
Over my shoulder, I called out, “I’m going for a swim.”
Following protocol, I showered before getting in the pool. Taking off my shorts, I looked down at my shriveled self and apologized for neglecting him—the outward expression of my emotional troubles.
Out in the pool, I found the flowers with Jared and Liam.
Lily barely greeted me with a surly expression.
“Ace, how could you be fighting with Tina? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.”
Poppy added, “She’s so sweet, and you drove her off? That’s nuts.”
I put my head underwater to have a moment to think.
“Ladies, I have a meeting with Tina this evening to try and mend things. I take full responsibility for screwing up. I’m hopeful I can make things right with her, though.”
Lily scowled. “You need to fix your relationship with Tina. I suppose if you don’t, then my sister will volunteer to soothe your disappointment.”
I arched an eyebrow. “And when Poppy’s finished, you’d be there too?”
“Well, yeah. You’re still the hottest straight guy in this pool.”
Liam added, “She’s right about that, Ace. I’m on record, too, if you are open to alternatives.”
“Yes, yes, Liam. I remember. I’m looking to simplify, not complexify, if that’s an actual word.”
“And you’re done with Laura?”
“Yeah, she’s definitely an ex. Excuse me, I want to swim some laps.”
I know it was all friendly banter, but I wanted to keep my focus on Tina.
Later, at dinner, I was still preoccupied and anxious. I picked at my food. Mom came around to my side of our table to sit next to me.
“I know you’re worried, Ace. But Tina will make up her own mind, and you have to be prepared either way. If she isn’t ready to commit to you, you’ll feel bad, but you can’t take all the blame. Are you hearing me?”
“Yes, mother.”
Dad was more direct. “Look at you! You’re slumping and looking defeated. Like you’ve given up. What does that tell Tina?”
“Um...” He had me there. I couldn’t show my anxiety to her.
“Your father’s right. If you think you’ve already lost her, why are you wasting her time tonight?”
